With modified unsaturated soil triaxial apparatus, unsaturated soil shear strength of the tests under the condition of different water contents are done. Experimental results show that the matric suction exist in unsaturated soil and increases with the decrease of moisture content. And the shear strength of unsaturated soil is higher than that of saturated soil. Shear strength of unsaturated soil varies as the matric suction and water content. The shear strength increases when the matric suction increases. when soil tend to be saturated, the matric suction will tend to be zero. And the shear strength of unsaturated soil values gradually close to the strength of the saturated soil.

The bearing capacity of a pile group mostly depends on parameters of the soil shear strength affected by the soil-water characteristics, especially in unsaturated soils. The soil shear strength is entirely affected by hydraulic stresses in unsaturated soil, such as precipitation and evaporation. Further, the bearing capacity of the pile installed on unsaturated soil depends on hydraulic stresses applied to the soil. Furthermore, slope vicinity may cause a severe decline in the pile bearing capacity. The present study aimed to investigate a pile group in unsaturated soil adjacent to a slope and analyzed the effect of the rainfall on the soil strength parameters. Thus, a numerical study has been performed using a finite difference software,i.e., FLAC2D. Besides, to investigate the model in a real situation, the intensity and duration of rainfall are considered to evaluate changes in hydraulic stresses. Finally, the results show that the rainfall causes a considerable decrease in soil strength parameters in unsaturated soil, leading to the reduction of the pile group bearing capacity and slope stability.

Rainfall is the main cause of landslides, the two are closely related. Based on the theory of saturatedunsaturated seepage and the theory of unsaturated soil shear strength, this paper makes an in-depth comparatve analysis on the infuence of short-term heavy rainfall and long-term weak rainfall on slope stability. The results show: The soil above the slope is more likely to reach saturaton under short-term heavy rainfall, while the infuence of long-term weak rainfall on the slope soil is deeper and the stability is greatly reduced. However, landslides with long periods of weak rainfall are more dangerous. In additon, the method of determining the critcal rainfall of a slope for landslide is obtained, and the safety status of the slope can be directly judged by comparing the actual rainfall with the critcal rainfall, and the classifcaton standard of the safety grade of a specifc slope is further obtained, which can provide reference for landslide preventon and treatment.
