A novel azobenzene polyelectrolyte (ABAPE) was synthesized based on chromophore 4-(4’-nitrophenylazo) naphthol (NPAN), epoxychloropropane and α-methacrylic acid. The ABAPE was characterized by FT-IR and UV-vis spectroscopy. The aggregation behaviors of ABAPE were investigated based on different pH values by the UV-vis spectroscopy. The isomerization behavior of the ABAPE in DMAC solution was studied by 256 nm UV irradiation light. Attenuated total reflection (ATR) method was adopted and carried out the measurement of refractive index of the thin film. The thermo-optic coefficient (dn/dT) was -2.9228×10-4°C-1 and was bigger than inorganic materials such as silica glass, zinc silicate glass, borosilicate glass and the organic materials of polystyrene and PMMA. These results showed that the polyelectrolyte could be used to carry out optical storage and thermo-optic switch.

Abstract The paper is focused on the study of two-dimensional magnetic field distribution used for an analysis of samples containing magnetically active films by means of the Attenuated Total Reflection (ATR) method. The design of a proposed electromagnet and the magnetic field model computation are presented together with the results obtained from magnetic field distribution measurement. The ATR method can provide information about a thin film thickness, refractive index, and attenuation in addition to the perfunctory coupling of an optical wave into and off a waveguide [1, 2]. The prism coupling conditions are determined for magnetic structures with induced anisotropy. The prism - a film coupler is located in the central cavity of a magnetic yoke. By current switching in the coils, we can change the amplitude and magnetic field direction in order to modulate the induced anisotropy in a thin film with magnetic ordering. By the in-plane modulation of the magnetization direction in the samples, we can change the rotation and elasticity of outgoing light.

ABSTRACTEmission light through the prism has been investigated from the Kretschmann configuration of the prism/ Ag thin film/ rhodamine-B (RB) LB film in the resonant excitation of the attenuated total reflection (ATR) measurement. The emission light and the spectra strongly depended upon the emission angles where the light was observed. The emission properties corresponded to the dispersion relation of the resonant excitations of surface plasmons (SPs) in the ATR configuration. It was concluded that the emission light was caused by multiple excitations of SPs in the ATR configuration. It is thought that the phenomenon will be used as a new sensing device.
