AbstractFrom a series of 4° objective-prism plates obtained on the 1 m Schmidt telescope of the Byurakan Astrophysical Observatory, 20 new Hα emission line stars were found. The intensity of Hα emission line was evaluated for these stars. An additional sample of probable Hα emission stars was also found. We present here details and some observational features of these stars. The total number of Hα emission line stars estimated for the surveyed area is about 80.

According to McCarthy (1984) the objects detected in objective prism surveys for Hα emission line are a ”most unnatural“ group. Of course they consist of many natural groupings whose identities or other peculiarities could become apparent after observing them with higher dispersion and resolution spectroscopy. In some cases, however, their galactic locations and associations with other known populations, can provide a clue to their population types.The aims of the objective prism surveys using the Bosscha Schmidt telescope can be broadly categorised as follows: 1.Searches for galactic planetary nebulae in the region 240° < l < 360 °; |b| ≤ 10°, initiated by The (1968).2.Searches for T-Tauri stars in some southern dark clouds (Shinohara, Ogura & Hidayat 1989).3.Searches for variations in Hα intensities and luminous emission stars in some selected galactic regions, such as in the Puppis and Carina regions.

The most unambiguous way to discover new emission-line galaxies (ELGs) is directly by the presence of their lines, using objective-prism plates of adequate resolution. The first survey using this technique was developed by Smith in 1975 with the 0.6 m CTIO Curtis Schmidt Telescope. The Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM) is carrying out a survey of ELGs with the Schmidt Telescope at Calar Alto (Almería, Spain) using the presence of Ha in emission in IIIa-F prism plates as selection criterion. The observational procedure and results are described in Rego et al. 1989; Zamorano et al. 1990; Zamorano et al. 1993.

We present a new survey of emission line galaxies, performed with the ESO 1 m Schmidt telescope equipped with the 4° objective prism using IIIa-J photographic emulsion. The plates are digitized with the MAMA microdensitometer. A subsequent reduction of the block scans gives redshifts with a mean accuracy of 160 km/s−1, and spectrophotometric measurements of the intensity and equivalent widths of the principal emission lines. A brief discussion is given of the possible extension of quantitative reduction of slitless spectroscopy to archive plates and future large CCD array frames.

Very deep, blue and red-sensitive objective-prism plates, taken with the Curtis Schmidt telescope at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory, were used to survey both Magellanic Clouds for unresolved objects which could be classified as highly probable planetary nebulae. The high sensitivity of the baked Kodak IIIa-J emulsion at 5000 Å made it possible to detect the N1 and N2 lines of [OIII] in fainter objects than previously observed. A number of emission-line stars, compact HII regions, and very-low-excitation objects, formerly considered to be probable or possible planetaries, were recognized and excluded. The final lists contain 27 confirmed planetaries in the SMC and 100 in the LMC, a ratio equivalent to the estimated ratio of total mass in the two systems. As would be expected, most of these objects had been detected in previous objective-prism surveys but some apparently new planetaries were found.

Eight years ago a program was started at the Vatican Observatory to search for faint emission-line stars close to the galactic plane. Indeed at that time few early type emission stars were known fainter than V = 12. This survey consists in a double program:the search for emission line stars with the Vatican Schmidt using the objective prism and an appropriate combination of plate and filter in order to have a narrow passband around Hα(McCarthy Treanor 1970);and UBVRI photometry at the Mt. Lemmon facilities of the Univ. of Arizona observatories. Five papers have already been published(Coyne et al 1974, 1975, 1978;Wisniewski et al 1976, 1977). Two more will be published later this year. The Vatican Emission Star Survey(VES) resulted in the discovery of about 1000 new emission-line stars; for 700 of those the photometry is finished.

AbstractIn order to discover emission-line galaxy (ELG) candidates towards the Hydra Void, an objective-prism survey was undertaken. As a first step, five fields were observed with the UK Schmidt Telescope, and we discovered a total of 33 candidates on a single prism plate through the [O III] λλ4959, 5007 emission feature.

A deep objective-prism survey for Hα emission stars towards the Canis Major star-forming clouds was performed. A total of 398 Hα emitters were detected, 353 of which are new detections. There is a strong concentration of these Hα emitters towards the molecular clouds surrounding the CMa OB1 association, and it is likely that these stars are young stellar objects recently born in the clouds. An additional population of Hα emitters is scattered all across the region, and probably includes unrelated foreground dMe stars and background Be stars. About 90% of the Hα emitters are detected by WISE, of which 75% was detected with usable photometry. When plotted in a WISE colour–colour diagram it appears that the majority are Class II YSOs. Coordinates and finding charts are provided for all the new stars, and coordinates for all the detections. We searched the Gaia-DR2 catalogue and from 334 Hα emission stars with useful parallaxes, we selected a subset of 98 stars that have parallax errors of less than 20% and nominal distances in the interval 1050 to 1350 pc that surrounds a strong peak at 1185 pc in the distance distribution. Similarly, Gaia distances were obtained for 51 OB-stars located towards Canis Major and selected with the same parallax errors as the Hα stars. We find a median distance for the OB stars of 1182 pc, in excellent correspondence with the distance from the Hα stars. Two known runaway stars are confirmed as members of the association. Finally, two new Herbig-Haro objects are identified.

The existing spectral searches for quasars have increased the number of quasars known very substantially but have not contributed proportionately to an understanding of the collective properties because of the selection effects. To fully exploit the spectral searches we have developed the technique of automated quasar detection (AQD) using objective-prism plates from the UK Schmidt Telescope, the COSMOS measuring machine at the Royal Observatory Edinburgh, and the STARLINK nodes at Durham and Edinburgh.

AbstractMeasurements made with the COSMOS machine on deep objectiveprism photographs taken with the UK 1.2m Schmidt Telescope are being used to obtain approximate redshifts (accurate to ~ 0.01 in z) for large numbers of galaxies in fields near the South Galactic Pole. The data are suitable for investigations of the distribution of galaxies, such as the detection of large-scale density enhancements or voids.
