Stomach contents from 285 pelagically feeding Australian salmon (Arripis truttaceus) caught in Western Port, Victoria, between May 1992 and June 1993 were examined. Stomach contents consisted of three species of clupeoid fishes. These were, in order of importance, anchovy (Engraulis australis), pilchard (Sardinops neoplchardus) and sandy sprat (Hyperlophus vittatus). The diet of A. truttaceus varied on a seasonal basis, both in terms of prey species composition and prey age (juvenile or adult). Adult anchovy were the dominant food item between October and January. In May 1992 and in February and March 1993, juvenile clupeoids dominated gut samples, with most of these being anchovy and pilchard. Sandy sprat comprised a significant component of gut samples in May 1992 and June 1993. Two size groups of salmon were temporarily resident in Western Port. The largest salmon were caught in October and November, and these were replaced by a smaller size group that dominated catches between December and June. The arrival of A. truttaceus subadults in Western Port in spring and their gradual departure from the bay in the late autumn and winter appears to be closely tied to the seasonal inshore/offshore migrations of prey species.

Diet of common dolphins off the Portuguese coast was studied based on the examination of stomach contents of 50 stranded and incidentally caught animals. The relative importance of each prey species was assessed through occurrence, numerical and biomass indices. Common dolphins preyed on a large variety of items but four fish and two cephalopod species appeared to form the basis of their diet. Overall, sardine (Sardina pilchardus) was the most important prey, as given by all the indices used to measure prey relative importance. Although common dolphins preyed mostly on pelagic species, they seemed able to explore habitats with distinct features and employ various foraging strategies. A comparison between the diet of dolphins of different sex and size groups was not indicative of major differences. Common dolphins incidentally caught in fishing nets had taken a higher proportion of sardines, the target species of the fishery.

SUMMARYA retrospective study of 258 children admitted to Ruchill Hospital, Glasgow, with croup between 1966 and 1972 indicated that the viruses most frequently associated with the syndrome were parainfluenza types 1 and 3 and influenza A. Most cases were admitted in the late autumn and winter months, with a small peak in May and June. This seasonal distribution mirrored the circulation of the main causative agents in the community, parainfluenza 1 being principally associated with the autumn cases, influenza A the winter cases and parainfluenza 3 the summer cases. Two of these ‘croup associated’ viruses showed regular periodicity, parainfluenza 1 occurring biennially in even years and influenza A in most years. The periodicity of parainfluenza 3 is as yet undetermined.

The present study provides information about the diet of sympatric populations of small cetaceans in the Babitonga Bay estuary. This is the first study on the diet of these species in direct sympatry. The stomach contents of seven Guiana dolphins Sotalia guianensis and eight franciscanas Pontoporia blainvillei were analyzed. The prey of both cetaceans was mostly teleost fishes, followed by cephalopods. We identified 13 teleost fishes as part of the diet of the franciscanas, and 20 as part of the diet of Guiana dolphins. Lolliguncula brevis was the only cephalopod recorded, and was the most important prey for both cetaceans. Stellifer rastrifer and Gobionellus oceanicus were also important for franciscana, so as Mugil curema and Micropogonias furnieri were important for Guiana dolphins. Stellifer rastrifer and Cetengraulis edentulus were the fishes with the highest frequency of occurrence for franciscana (50%), while Achirus lineatus, C. edentulus, S. brasiliensis, Cynoscion leiarchus, M. furnieri, M. curema, Diapterus rhombeus, Eugerres brasilianus and G. oceanicus showed 28.6% of frequency of occurrence for Guiana dolphins. Franciscanas captured greater cephalopods than the Guiana dolphins in both total length (z= -3.38; n= 40; p< 0.05) and biomass (z = -2.46; n = 40; p<0.05). All of the prey species identified occur inside the estuary, which represents a safe habitat against predators and food availability, reinforcing the importance of the Babitonga Bay for these cetacean populations.

The honey flora of the forest plant community is an important forage resource for the development of beekeeping. That’s why it is desirable to assess species composition and total number of honey plants and to determine the honey reserve of the area of the forest community plant. The forest cover of the Orel region is 9.3%, and this cover is distributed on its territory very irregularly. 257 species out of the total number of honey plants in the region are found in the forests. Deciduous forests are dominant in the Orel region including oak, ash, linden, birch and aspen. The results of studies of flowering plants in the forest plant community showed that there is a sufficient number of honey plants in the forest to provide bee families with nectar from spring to late autumn due to the natural flower-nectar conveyor. The assessment of the honey stock of this community shows that the stock equals 4,872 tons from 203 thousand hectares of forest. And bees can sip only about 30% (1,626 tons). It proves that significant honey reserves are concentrated in the forest plant community of the Orel region. The rational use of these reserves will help to solve the problem of reproduction of new bee families of the aboriginal Central Russian breed and to organize a long honey gathering by bees that provide people of the region with honey.

During 5 successive years, 0, 6, 12 or 18 t/ha yr metal-bearing sewage sludge on a DM basis was applied to permanent grassland. Each sludge application was combined with various N treatments. Cd content of the grass increased considerably with increasing amounts of sewage sludge and fertilizer N; Cd content was higher in young than in old grass. The latter also applied to Pb but the increase in Pb content was less and the relation between the supply of Pb and the Pb content of the grass was poor. Stomach contents of 104 C. fuscus (of 275-415 mm standard length) from rocky reef habitats in the Sydney region were analysed. This species was found to be entirely carnivorous, polychaetes, brachyurans, amphipods, gastropods and bivalves comprising the major food types and dominating the diet throughout the year. However, the relative proportions of these food types in the diet were found to vary considerably on a seasonal basis.

Computerized Platelet Aggregation Analysis (CPAA) is a new direct, microscopic methedo-logy using image analysis to quantitate thousands of free platelets and aggregates in platelet rich plasma suspensions and determine the percentage of platelets present in discrete aggregate size groups. CPAA is sensitive to the earliest stages of platelet aggregation which are not recognized by light transmission aggregometry (0% change in light transmission). Platelets of ten normal irxiividuals aged 20-40 years were stimulated by a spin bar (SB) (1100 rpm) for a one minute and a ten minute period. The mean values are shown below for different aggregate size groups.There is no significant increase in the number of aggregates between one and ten mirais of stimulation except for size group 9-40, which shows a minimal increment (P .025). All platelet suspensions contained aggregates of size group 3-8 platelets/aggregate and 4 of 10 specimens had aggregates of size 9-40,No aggregates larger than 41 platelets were found. CPAA can also be applied to the study of larger sized platelet aggregates induced in abnormal individuals.

Gammarus finmarchicus is an amphi-Atlantic species. In the western Atlantic it is found from the island of St. Pierre south to Long Island Sound. At St. Andrews, New Brunswick, 50% maturity occurs at 10.5 mm in the females. Reproduction is in progress throughout the year, but small females evidently are in a resting condition during September–October before breeding. The release of young by the population is greater in the spring, summer, and early autumn than it is in late autumn and winter. The young released in the spring and summer do not reproduce until the next year so that the life cycle is annual.

Buried seeds of witchgrass (Panicum capillare L., # PANCA) exposed to natural seasonal temperature changes in Lexington, KY, for 0 to 35 months exhibited annual dormancy/nondormancy cycles. Seeds were dormant at maturity in early October. During burial in late autumn and winter, fresh seeds and those that had been buried for 1 and 2 years became nondormant. Nondormant seeds germinated from 76 to 100% in light at daily thermoperiods of 15/6, 20/10, 25/15, 30/15, and 35/20 C, while in darkness they germinated from 1 to 24%. In late spring, seeds lost the ability to germinate in darkness, and by late summer 63 to 100% of them had lost the ability to germinate in light. As seeds became nondormant, they germinated (in light) at high (35/20, 30/15 C) and then at lower (25/15, 20/10, and 15/6 C) temperatures. As seeds reentered dormancy, they lost the ability to germinate (in light) at 15/6 C and at higher thermoperiods 2 to 3 months later.
