Engineering characterization which are useful for "temperate" zone soils usually fail to predict the field performance of bauxitic soils, because the index tests upon which the characterization are based are not always reproducible for bauxitic soils. Fifteen (15) bauxitic soil of undisturbed and disturbed samples from 3 distinct sites in Kuantan, all derived from basalt parent rock but representing various stages of weathering were subjected to engineering and mineralogic tests. Values for cohesion and friction angles are evaluated. Soils from Semambu has the highest moisture content of 33.27%, the cohesion value is however lower compared to Bukit Goh which has moisture content of 21.74%. Study are further done to discover the relationship with cohesion and friction angles. Thus, by measuring the cohesion and friction angle can evaluate the performance of bauxite shear strength.

Running-in is an important and inevitable wear process for machine system, and it plays an indispensable role in extending service life and improving operating performance. Surface topography appears as a significant feature of friction pairs. Therefore, study on modification of surface topography in running-in is crucial to control surface quality and then achieve improvement of machine system. In this paper, to understand the evolution of surface topography in running-in process, steel dry sliding running-in experiments were conducted, and surface topographies in running-in were evaluated with the areal surface evaluation parameters. The results reveal that surface topography evaluation could provide valuable information about wear status of steel running-in process of dry sliding friction, amplitude parameters, area and volume parameters, and hybrid parameters play different and important roles in characterization of surface topography modification in running-in.

Abstract. A simple, portable, and rugged instrumentation system has been successfully developed and field demonstrated to monitor, measure, and record the harvested crop yield and selected machine field performance parameters from the typical rice combines in Malaysia. The complete system comprises of two ultrasonic sensors located at the combine header to measure the cutting width, microwave solid flow, and microwave moisture sensors at the combine clean grain auger to measure the flow rate and moisture content of the cleaned grains going into the grain tank, electromagnetic detector on the combine grain elevator drive shaft to monitor the grain elevator rotational speed, and lastly a DGPS receiver on the combine console roof to indicate the travel speed and geo-position in the field. All these measured parameters were made to display in-real time on the touch panel screen of the embedded system on-board the combine for the interest of the combine operator and also made to display in-real time on the monitor of the toughbook at the on-ground base station for the interest of the system controller. Static calibrations on the individual sensors showed excellent measurement linearity having R2 values within 0.8760 to 1.000 ranges. The wireless communication between the embedded system on-board the combine and the toughbook at the on-ground base station could be sustained to a maximum distance of 185 m apart. Site specific variability maps of crop yield, harvested grain moisture content, combine cutting width, combine traveling speed, combine field capacity, and combine field efficiency within the harvested area could be produced from the data obtained with the instrumentation system using a GIS software. Keywords: Grain harvesting, Paddy mechanization, Precision farming, Wireless data transmission, Yield monitoring.

Polygalacturonases represent an important member of pectinases group of enzymes with immense industrial applications. The activity of exo-polygalacturonase produced by Aspergillus niger was studied in solid state fermentation (SSF) using Nephrolepis biserrata leaves as substrate. Central composite design (CCD) was used to optimize four significant variables resulted from the screening process that has been initially analyzed for the production of exo-polygalacturonase which are incubation time, temperature, concentration of pectin and moisture content. The optimum exo-polygalacturonase production obtained was 54.64 U/g at 120 hours of incubation time, temperature at 340C, 5.0 g/L of pectin concentration and 75.26% of moisture content. For partial characterization of exo-polygalacturonase, the optimum temperature and pH were obtained at 50°C and pH 4.0, respectively. SDS-PAGE analysis showed that molecular weight of exo-polygalacturonase were 35 and 71 kDa. This study has revealed a significant production of exo-polygalacturonase by A. niger under SSF using cheap and easily available substrate and thus could found immense potential application in industrial sectors and biotechnology
