Abstract The assessment of the systematic behavior based on frequentist statistics was analyzed in the context of micro/nano metrology. The proposed method is in agreement with the well-known GUM recommendations. The investigation assessed three different case studies with definition of model equations and establishment of the traceability. The systematic behavior was modeled in Sq roughness parameters and step height measurements obtained from different types of optical microscopes, and in comparison with a calibrated contact instrument. The sequence of case studies demonstrated the applicability of the method to micrographs when their elements are averaged. Moreover, a number of influence factors, which are typical causes of inaccuracy at the micro and nano length scales, were analyzed in relation to the correction of the systematic behavior, viz. the amount of repeated measurements, the time sequence of the acquired micrographs and the instrument-operator chain. The possibility of applying the method individually to the elements of the micrographs was instead proven not convenient and too onerous for the industry. Eventually, the method was also examined against the framework of the metrological characteristics defined in ISO 25178-600 with hints on possible future developments.

Abstract Solid-liquid composite lubrication system has attracted an increased interest for low friction and wear. Nevertheless, the effect of mechanical and surface properties of the solid materials, especially the mechanical and surface properties governed by doping elements, on the tribological performance solid-liquid composite lubrication system is still not well comprehended. Here, we reported the effect of W content on the mechanical and surface properties of W-DLC coatings as well as the tribological properties of W-DLC coatings under (choline chloride-urea and choline chloride-thiourea) deep eutectic solvents lubrication. Although the wear of W-DLC coatings under dry friction increases with W content, the wear under DESs is slight when coatings show excellent wettability to DESs or a DES-derived tribochemical film is formed. We demonstrate that the tribological behavior of W-DLC and DESs composite lubrication system is related to the mechanical properties of W-DLC coatings together with the contact angle and tribochemical interaction between DESs and W-DLC coatings.

Abstract To improve the fretting wear performance of 18CrNi4A steel, DLC, TiAlN and DLC/TiAlN coatings were deposited on the surface of carburized 18CrNi4A steel, respectively. The microstructure morphologies, chemical compositions, and mechanical properties of these coatings were evaluated. The fretting tribological properties of pad/flat contact pairs for carburized 18CrNi4A steel, DLC, TiAlN and DLC/TiAlN coatings were investigated in different lubricant environments including dry sliding and #RIPP 7254 aviation grease. The results show that DLC, TiAlN and DLC/TiAlN coatings deposited on the carburized 18CrNi4A steel surface can improve surface roughness, hardness, fracture toughness and resistance to plastic deformation. DLC, TiAlN and DLC/TiAlN coatings deposited on the surface of carburized 18CrNi4A steel can make the surface of the substrate have excellent fretting wear properties. DLC and DLC/TiAlN coatings have lower coefficient of friction and better fretting wear resistance than TiAlN coatings in dry sliding condition, and DLC/TiAlN coatings have the lowest wear rate in #RIPP 7254 grease lubrication condition. In addition, the wear mechanisms of carburized 18CrNi4A steel, DLC, TiAlN and DLC/TiAlN coatings in dry sliding and #RIPP 7254 aviation grease conditions were analyzed.

Abstract Electrodeposited ZnNi coatings are widely used to improve the corrosion resistance of steel substrates, but their tribological properties are also relevant for loaded contacts under relative motion. This work investigates the hypothesis of improving tribological properties of electrodeposited ZnNi coatings via dispersion of niobium pentoxide nanoparticles (1g/L) in the electrolytic bath. The niobium pentoxide nanoparticles were produced via hydrothermal synthesis assisted by microwave. The surface morphology and chemical composition of the coatings were analysed by scanning electron microscopy coupled with X-ray dispersive energy, X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The tribological performance of the coatings was assessed using dry reciprocating ball-on-flat tests at normal loads between 3 and 6 N. The use of niobium pentoxide nanoparticles resulted in significantly denser coatings, with some Nb incorporated in the coated surfaces. Under the lowest normal load, all coated specimens showed relatively low friction (~0.2) and negligible damag. As the normal load increased, the coating produced using niobium pentoxide nanoparticles showed stronger adherence, while conventional ZnNi coating showed increased friction and spalling for the highest load. It is believed that the Nb2O5 nanoparticles increased the number of sites for heterogeneous nucleation, refining the microstructure, so that tougher and more adherent coatings were produced.

Abstract In medical fields, hydroxyapatite (HA) is used for restoring the human bones and teeth. Nowadays, newer bio composites are being developed to replace the broken or removed teeth in human using hydroxyapatite. The original teeth may be removed from human, due to various reasons such as tooth decay, periodontal disease and gum diseases. Due to the bioactivity property of HA, it helps the tooth to grow. In this work, tribological properties of HA powder reinforced composite are investigated. Three most important factors that affect the properties of the composites were chosen and varied during wear testing of the composites. The HA powder weight %, applied load (P) and sliding distance (SD) were varied on the basis of Taguchi’s experimental design. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and (Signal to Noise) SN ratio analysis was used to study the influence of each factor on the specific wear rate (SWR). It was concluded that the HA wt. % highly influences the SWR of the composite during pin on disc testing.

Abstract The proposed work investigates the hybrid surface characterisation of intra thin-walled Ti6Al4V surfaces fabricated using laser powder bed fusion technology. The thin-walled samples were characterised using scanning electron microscopy and Opto-digital microscopy techniques. The fractal dimensional analysis was performed using ImageJ software integrated with an open-source MultiFrac plug-in. The surface microscopy analysis revealed satellites powder particles, partially melted powder particles, spherical balling, and pores on the thin-walled surface. The fractal dimension establishes a correlation between the surface roughness values. The surface areal surface parameters analysis suggested variation along the build direction of thin-walled Ti6Al4V sample. The development of sharp peaks and thus higher Ra, Sku and Ssk values were found along the build direction of the intra thin-walled samples. Therefore, the combination of areal surface topography analysis and fractal dimension approach can be a promising methodology towards surface characterisation of additively manufactured complex thin-walled surfaces.

Abstract To enhance surface mechanical properties of 690TT alloy, a surface hardening layer was obtained by ultrasonic surface rolling treatment (USRT) and plasma nitriding (PN). The surface morphology, mechanical properties, wear performances and corrosion performance were investigated by XRD, TEM, using a hardness tester, tensile tester, wear tester and electrochemical workstation in simulated sea water, respectively. The results showed that USRT as the pre-treatment can strengthen the performance of PN treatment samples. The USRT+PN treated sample showed existence of dislocation tangles and twin grains. Corrosion resistance in simulated sea water was enhanced. The surface microhardness increased by 180 % compared with the untreated sample, the cross-sectional hardness gradually decreased till the depth of 1mm. The tensile strength increased by a factor of 90% while the elongation decreased by only 40%. The wear scar was narrower and shallower than the untreated sample and the wear rate was significantly dropped. This paper aims at providing a new method for surface strengthening of 690TT alloy.

Abstract A functional composite material that simultaneously exhibits hydrophobicity and water droplet adhesion has monumental potential in controlling fluid flow, studying phase separation, and biological research. This article reports the fabrication of a petal wetting biomimetic Boron Nitride Nanotubes (BNNTs) -Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) nanocomposite achieved by drop casting. The petal effect was investigated by non-destructive techniques. The nanotubes were synthesized by chemical vapor deposition at 1150 °C and were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The mean diameter of the nanotubes was found to be 70 nm. The nanocomposites had BNNT fillers ranging from 0.5 wt. % to 2 wt. %. Water contact angles for pure PDMS polymer was 94.7° and for the 2 wt. % BNNT-PDMS nanocomposite was 132.4°. The petal wetting nanocomposite displayed a characteristic trait of high contact angle hysteresis. The surface roughness parameters of the nanocomposites were determined by atomic force microscopy. Laser scanning confocal microscopy aided in analyzing the droplet penetration and in observing the trapped air between the water droplet and the nanocomposite surface. Based on surface observations, roughness parameters, and the extent of droplet penetration by the surface, we shed light on the Cassie impregnating wetting regime followed by the biomimetic nanocomposite. Such a surface would be beneficial in the study of the embryogenesis of cells and aid in moisture collection.

Abstract Solar panel cleaning is important to maintain the efficiency of energy production. In this research, we investigated the effects of relative humidity and condensation on the effectiveness of cleaning. The dust particles are subjected to various forces once they are deposited on the surface of a solar panel. When the dust particles continue to build up, they are also subjected to the adhesion forces from the neighboring dust particles. The adhesion forces from the substrates and the neighboring particles are dependent on the ambient conditions. Fundamentally, the interaction between the adhesion force of particle-particle and particle-substrate under various conditions was discussed in this manuscript.

Abstract Since synthetic quartz is essential to produce 3-D resonators for numerous applications in precision electronics, in this work the surface topography of cylindrical quartz bars is investigated using the multifractal technique. The cylindrical bars were manufactured with ultrasonic machining using with five SiC grits ranging from 6 to 50 µm. The machined surfaces were initially characterized by contact profilometry and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The multifractality of the machined surfaces was scrutinized using a box-counting method applied to the images obtained with 500X magnification. The multifractal spectrum indicated that the fractal dimension f(α) and the width of the fractal spectrum Δα are dependent on the grit size, but this dependence is not monotonic. The lowest (negative) value for Δf(α) was found for 25 µm grits indicating that for these grits the lower frequency events (grooves with tens µm width occurring along the USM direction) controls the surface topography much more than high frequency events related to brittle microcracking. The abrasive wear due to the continuous slurry recycling in lateral tool-workpiece interfaces contributed to smooth the groove texture as well as the sharpness of microscopic indentations, which remained observed on the surfaces machined with 50 µm grits. The opposite paths observed for the arithmetical mean deviation of the measured profile (Ra) and Δf(α) parameters with the cutting rate measured for each grit size were valuable to differentiate flat-rough and unlevelled-rough topographies in quartz bars.
