The taxonomy of the southeastern Brazilian species of Psolus is reviewed and two new species described. Additionally, P. vitoriae is redescribed based on a newly designated neotype and supplemental material from the type locality and nearby regions. The synonymy of P. marcusi with P. patagonicus is called into question. The calcareous ring is useful for distinguishing between some Psolus species. Psolus tommasi sp. nov. is characterized by having five oral valves, an anus covered by a variable number of small, irregular anal valves, oral and anal valves distinct from body wall scales, calcareous ring interradial plates entire, calcareous ring simple, without posterior processes; radial and interradial plates entire, dorsal ossicles spheroid bodies and sole ossicles knobbed and smooth perforated plates. Psolus thandari sp. nov. is characterized by granules on body scales; mouth surrounded by five to seven triangular valves of equal size; anus surrounded by a variable number of small and irregular anal valves that grade into surrounding scales; calcareous ring with interradial plates entire. Six species of Psolus are known from the southwestern Atlantic and Magellanic region: P. vitoriae (São Paulo, Brazil); P. patagonicus (Mar del Plata to Tierra del Fuego, Argentina; Strait of Magellan and Cape Horn); P. segregatus (Patagonia, Argentina; Strait of Magellan, Chile; Hikurangi Margin and Chatham Rise, New Zealand); P. antarcticus (Magellanic region; South Georgia Island, southern Atlantic Ocean; Macquarie Island and Ridge, New Zealand); P. lawrencei (Mar del Plata, Argentina) and Psolus murrayi Théel, 1886 (Montevideo, Uruguay). A key to the species of Psolus from the southwestern Atlantic and Magellanic region, and a synoptic table to all southern Atlantic Psolus species is provided.

Paramunnid species of Southern Hemisphere cold-water Austronanus Hodgson, 1910 and related genera are characterised by simple, smooth, flattened, rather elongate oval bodies, a broadly projecting frontal head margin, well-developed, short, mostly distally bulging eyestalks with ommatidia, pereonites with lateral margins contiguous, rounded or truncate, and dorsally visible coxae V–VII. Just and Wilson (2004) rejected synonymy of Austronanus with Paramunna Sars proposed by Nordenstam (1933), following a revision of the latter genus. The type species, Austronanus glacialis Hodgson, 1910, is re-described based on topotypic material from McMurdo Sound, Antarctica, (the holotype is a small manca). The types of Paramunna dentata Nordenstam, 1933 and P. dubia Hale, 1937 are re-described and the two species referred to Austronanus together with three new Antarctic and subantarctic species, A. aucklandensis, A. gelidus and A. mawsoni. Paramunna patagoniensis Winkler, 1994 is redescribed and made the type species of a new genus, Xigonus. A new genus, Stephenseniellus, is established for two new species from the subantarctic islands south of New Zealand and Australia, S. palliolatipes (type species) from Macquarie Island, and S. serraticornis (originally reported by Stephensen, 1927 as “Paramunna (serrata (Richardson) ?”) from Auckland Island.

The discovery of two diminutive and very distinct ibliform barnacles from shallow waters off northern New Zealand and northeastern Tasmania provides an opportunity to re-evaluate the Iblidae, the most primitive of the living thoracicans. These are retained within the Superorder Thoracica, but are distinguished at ordinal level from the remainder of the Pedunculata s.l. The resultant new order, the Ibliformes nov., comprises barnacles with predominantly chitinous rather than calcareous capitular plates; two families are recognized, the Iblidae s.s., comprising two subfamilies, the Iblinae (Ibla s.s.) and the Neoiblinae nov. (Neoibla gen. nov.), and the Idioiblidae nov. comprising the Idioiblinae nov. (Idioibla gen. nov.) and the Chaetolepadinae nov. (Chaetolepas Studer, 1889 and Chitinolepas gen. nov.). The monotypic Chitinolepas further highlights the high endemism and relict nature of the New Zealand marine fauna in particular and the southern hemisphere in general. On the basis of morphology and, where possible, genetic and larval work, it is recommended that the remainder of the stalked thoracicans be divided between three new orders, the †Cyprilepadiformes, Ibliformes, Lepadiformes and Scalpelliformes.

AbstractTwo new species of Psoroma with unusual cephalodia are described: P. echinaceum with isidiate cephalodia, from southern South America and P. geminatum with fragile phyllidiate cephalodia, from New Zealand and Australia. These are additional to two previously described species producing dispersal units on their cephalodia, P. durietzii P.James & Henssen (with soredia) and P. aphthosum, Vain. (syn. nov. P. dimorphum Malme) (with isidia). This is a strategy development that ensures successful establishment of new thalli.

Two new species, Prolixus nicholasi sp. nov. and Prolixus setifolius sp. nov., are described and illustrated from leaves of Gahnia setifolia (Cyperaceae) in Auckland, New Zealand. In this paper, we present the ontogenetic additions in idiosomal and the leg chaetotaxy from larva to adult. The adult male and female of P. setifolius have different leg setae, allowing all active life stages to be sexed. A key to world species of Prolixus is also proposed.
