During 1994, a study was carried out by the Working Group on Continuing Electrical Engineering Education of the European Federation of Electrical Engineering National Professional Organizations (EUREL). The resulting study report considered the importance of continuing education to industry, individuals, universities and national professional organizations of engineers. This article comprises a condensed version of that document. It includes data on the supply of and demand for continuing education and discusses the issues of accreditation and credit transfers in Europe in the context of continuing electrical engineering education. Finally, it assesses information on the most important current and planned European projects and reviews possible future strategies for the development of a European system for continuing engineering education.
