Rejection of corneal grafts was produced in rabbits after skin from the corneal donor was grafted subcutaneously. Clinical observations showed that the graft sickness started at the periphery of the graft after blood vessels from the host cornea reached the scar. Histologic studies demonstrated that the scar tissue was first invaded by vessels and infiltrated by lymphocytes, monocytes, and plasma cells. This infiltrate reached the endothelium through the gap in Descemet's membrane. The early histological picture of the graft sickness was characterized by endothelial destruction and infiltration at its junction with the scar. Keratocytes changed in shape and apparently became active fibroblasts. Decreased amounts of ground substance in the early stages of rejection, as indicated by appearance of haziness in the graft, were indicated in sections by a decrease in metachromatic staining. Diminished uptake of radioactive sulfate also occurred in the early stages of the graft sickness; which was followed by an elevated uptake of sulfate as the graft became opaque and filled with active fibroblasts.

Chapter 7 furthers the analysis of the role of anatomical models as cultural currencies capable of transferring value. It does so by expanding the investigation of the early stages of anatomical modelling to include a new setting. In particular, it follows the journey of the Palermitan anatomist and modeller Giuseppe Salerno and his anatomical ‘skeleton’—a specimen that represented the body’s complex web of blood vessels and was presented as the result of anatomical injections. Although Salerno was headed towards Bologna, a major centre of anatomical modelling, he ended his journey in Naples after the nobleman Raimondo di Sangro purchased the skeleton for his own cabinet of curiosities. This chapter considers the creation and viewing of an anatomical display in di Sangro’s Neapolitan Palace from a comparative perspective that highlights how geography and locality played an important part in shaping the culture of mid-eighteenth-century anatomical modelling.

The localization of IgA, IgG, IgM, SP and the relationships of plasma cells and lymphocytes to blood vessels in the tonsillar crypt epithelium were investigated. Immunofluorescent techniques were used that included antisera specific for the two antigenic determinants of external secretory IgA, namely, 4s SP and 7s IgA, and also antisera specific for 7s IgG and 19s IgM. The secretory piece was absent in the crypt epithelium and in most of the crypt lumen. Aggregations of plasmacyte series cells, containing either IgG, IgA, or IgM were present in the crypt epithelium. Mature plasma cells of these aggregations abutted against the walls of blood sinusoids located in the epithelium, which suggested secretion into these sinusoids. All three immunoglobulins were also identified between epithelial cells and small lymphocytes. Postcapillary venules with emigrating small lymphocytes abounded in sub-epithelial sites, and were present at the lower border zone of the epithelium. Lymphocytes in shapes of diapedesis were observed in the endothelium of epithelial blood sinusoids. These observations are in accord with the hypothesis that a “circulation” of many lymphocytes occurs in the epithelium facilitating the activation of any one genetically committed lymphocyte.
