Abstract The 4s24p 2P3/2 – 2P1/2 magnetic dipole transition in Ga-like ions is interested in developing of high precise highly charged ion clock [Phys. Rev. A, 99, 02213(2019)]. In this work, we present direct observations of the transition in Mo11+ and Ru13+ ions at an electron beam ion trap. Internal and external calibration methods are used for determining the wavelength of the Mo11+ and Ru13+ lines, respectively. Both measurements reach precision levels of a few ppm. Compared with the available values, the current results significantly improve the experimental uncertainty.

The electron beam ion trap (EBIT) in Tokyo was constructed about 10 years after the first EBIT at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory was built, and has been being stably operated since then. In this paper, we present recent experimental activities at the Tokyo EBIT. In particular, experiments utilizing slow, very highly charged ion beams extracted from the EBIT are reported. The wavelengths of the 1s1/2–2p1/2 and 1s1/2–2p3/2 Lyman-α transitions have been measured in hydrogenic silicon with an accuracy of 70 ppm. The measurement was carried out with an electron-beam ion trap with a calibrated double-faced monolithic crystal that enabled absolute measurements of the transition wavelengths. The values for the Lyman-α wavelengths are λLyα1 = 6.180 49(44) Å and λLyα2 = 6.185 56(66) Å. The wavelengths are in good agreement with calculations and allow a determination of the 1s Lamb shift to within 28% in a region that has received little experimental attention. Systematic variation of the electron-beam energy in an electron-beam ion trap has been employed to produce soft-X-ray spectra (20 to 60 Å) of Au with well-defined maximum charge states ranging from Br- to Co-like ions. Guided by large-scale relativistic atomic structure calculations, the strongest Δn = 0 (n = 4 to n' = 4) transitions in Rb- to Cu-like ions (Au42+ – Au50+) have been identified.
