Delving deeper into the phylogenetics of the herbaceous bamboos (Poaceae, Bambusoideae, Olyreae): evaluation of generic boundaries within the Parodiolyra/Raddiella clade uncovers a new genus

Abstract The present study aims to expand the knowledge of phylogenetic relationships in Olyrinae, a subtribe of herbaceous bamboos (Poaceae: Bambusoideae: Olyreae). Our focus is on Parodiolyra and Raddiella, two historically related genera that, with their sister Diandrolyra, form one of the four main lineages in the subtribe. Previous phylogenetic analyses suggested that Parodiolyra is not monophyletic, but its taxonomic boundaries and its relationship with Raddiella remain uncertain due to low sampling. We increased the taxon sampling and sequenced five regions of the nuclear and plastid genomes for this lineage and other representatives of Olyreae. We used maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood, Bayesian inference and coalescence analysis. Our results corroborate the paraphyly of Parodiolyra, with P. micrantha sister to a clade including the remaining Parodiolyra and Raddiella. All remaining Parodiolyra form a well-supported clade, but Raddiella had conflicting resolutions, being either monophyletic or not. Thus, based on phylogenetic and morphological evidence, we here recircumscribe Parodiolyra, transferring P. micrantha and P. colombiensis to the new genus Taquara (described here). Regarding Raddiella, sampling is still not comprehensive and does not allow a decision on to its taxonomic status to be made at this time. Inclusion of other phreatophytic species may be crucial to resolve the problem of conflicting topologies.

The Epicopeiidae is a small geometroid family distributed in the East Palaearctic and Oriental regions. It exhibits high morphological diversity in body size and wing shape, while their wing patterns involve in various complex mimicry rings. In the present study, we attempted to describe a new genus, and a new species from Vietnam, with comments on two assumed congeneric novel species from China and India. To address its phylogenetic affinity, we reconstructed the phylogeny of the family by using sequence data of COI, EF-1α, and 28S gene regions obtained from seven genera of Epicopeiidae with Pseudobiston pinratanai as the outgroup. We also compared the morphology of the new taxon to other epicopeiid genera to affirm its taxonomic status. The results suggest that the undescribed taxon deserve a new genus, namely Mimaporia gen. n. The species from Vietnam, Mimaporia hmong sp. n., is described as new to science. Under different tree building strategies, the new genus is the sister group of either Chatamla Moore, 1881 or Parabraxas Leech, 1897. The morphological evidence, which was not included in phylogenetic analyses, however, suggests its potential affinity with Burmeia Minet, 2003. This study also provides the first, although preliminary, molecular phylogeny of the family on which the revised systematics and interpretation of character evolution can be based.

Osmanthus (Oleaceae) is considered one of the most confusing genera with regards to circumscription and phylogenetic placement of taxa within the subtribe Oleinae of Oleaceae, with controversies mainly focused on the attribution of section Leiolea. In the present study, we analyzed 71 samples that represent the broad taxonomic, biogeographic, and morphological patterns in the subtribe Oleinae. Based on concatenation of four plastid genes (trnL-F, trnT-L, trnS-G, and matK) and comparison with the ITS region, Bayesian Inference, Maximum Likelihood and Maximum Parsimony phylogenies were inferred. Morphological character traits and geographical distributions of taxa were also studied. These results provide strong support for the segregation of the Leiolea clade (Osmanthus marginatus, O. matsumuranus and O. minor) of sect. Leiolea from Osmanthus. Therefore, the Leiolea clade is instated as the new genus Chengiodendron, with a taxonomic treatment provided. This study provides a clearer understanding of the phylogenetic relationships of genera in the subtribe Oleinae.

In this paper, Claviformisporagen. nov. in Linocarpaceae is introduced from Phyllostachys heteroclada in Sichuan Province, China. The new genus is characterised by its distinct morphological characters, such as ostiole with periphyses, asci with a thick doughnut-shaped, J- apical ring and clavate ascospore without septum-like band and appendage. Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian Inference phylogenetic analyses, based on DNA sequence data from ITS, LSU, SSU and TEF-1α regions, provide further evidence that the fungus is a distinct genus within this family. The new genus is compared with similar genera, such as Linocarpon and Neolinocarpon. Descriptions, illustrations and notes are provided for the new taxon.

The Chenopodiaceae includes taxa with both C3 and C4 photosynthesis with diverse kinds of Kranz anatomy and single-celled C4 species without Kranz anatomy; thus, it is of key importance for understanding evolution of C4 photosynthesis. All of the C4 genera except Atriplex, which belongs to Chenopodioideae, are in the Salicornioideae / Suaedoideae / Salsoloideae s.l. (including Camphorosmeae and Sclerolaeneae) clade. Our study focused on the relationships of the main lineages within this clade with an emphasis on the placement of the single cell functioning C4 genus Bienertia using maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood, and Bayesian inference phylogenetic analyses of the nuclear ribosomal ITS and five chloroplast DNA regions (atpB-rbcL, matK, psbB-psbH, rbcL, and trnL-trnF). Further we provide a detailed phylogeny of Alexandra and Suaeda based on ITS, atpB-rbcL, and psbB-psbH. Our molecular data provide strong statistical support for the monophyly of: (1) a Salicornioideae / Suaedoideae / Salsoloideae s.l. clade; (2) a Salicornioideae / Suaedoideae clade; (3) the subfamilies Salicornioideae, Suaedoideae (including Bienertia) and Salsoloideae s.l.; (4) the tribes Suaedeae, Salsoleae, and Camphorosmeae; (5) the Salicornieae if Halopeplideae is included; and (6) Suaeda if Alexandra is included. Alexandra lehmannii is therefore reclassified as Suaeda lehmannii and a new section of Suaeda is created, section Alexandra. There are four independent origins of C4 photosynthesis within the Suaedoideae including two parallel origins of Kranz C4 anatomy (in Suaeda sections Salsina s.l. and Schoberia) and two independent origins of C4 systems without Kranz anatomy (in Bienertia and in Suaeda section Borszczowia).

To infer phylogenetic relationships among species of Hypomyces (Fr.) Tul and allied genera, partial sequences of the 28S rDNA were obtained for 21 strains representing 19 species. On the basis of these data and 38 sequences obtained from GenBank, phylogenetic analyses were performed using the programs PAUP and Pee-Wee. Hypomyces appears to be paraphyletic, with species having wet-conidial phialidic anamorphs more closely related to other genera. Hypomyces chrysostomus Berk & Broome is a sister group to the clade that includes species of Aphysiostroma Barrasa et al., Arachnocrea Moravec, and Hypocrea Fr. Based on morphological and molecular evidence, a new genus, Sporophagomyces, is described for Hypomyces chrysostomus and two allied species. Hypomyces broomeanus Tul. forms one clade with species of Sphaerostilbella Sacc. and is transferred to this genus. The recognition of Arachnocrea is justified. The integration of Cladobotryum Nees species that are not known to undergo sexual reproduction with Hypomyces species that possess Cladobotryum anamorphs receives strong support, but the whole complex of these species appears to be paraphyletic. However, constraint trees, which require monophyly of all these ana- and pleo-morphic species, do not appear significantly less likely than the other trees obtained under maximum likelihood or parsimony criteria. For the remaining species of Hypomyces, four distinct lineages are distinguished.

We investigated the phylogeny of the genus Cynanthus and the taxonomic status of C. doubledayi using partial sequences of the mitochondrial DNA gene ND2 and three phylogenetic approaches: maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood, and Bayesian inference. Our results corroborate the monophyly of the genus and provide preliminary support for the validity of C. doubledayi as a full species (not a subspecies of C. latirostris, as traditionally considered). As an endemic of the coastal plain of southwestern Mexico, C. doubledayi corroborates the importance of this region for in situ speciation of birds and other taxa.

The superfamily Sylvioidea contains the most diversified species within the Passerida. The grey-cheeked fulvetta (Alcippe morrisonia) and the eyebrowed wren-babbler (Napothera epilepidota) are birds with a weak flight that live in lightly wooded or scrubland environments. In the present study, two new mitogenomes of A. morrisonia (KX376475) and N. epilepidota (KX831093) within the superfamily Sylvioidea were sequenced and their total lengths were 17788bp and 17913bp, respectively. Both mitogenomes comprised 13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNAs, 2 rRNAs and two control regions (CR and CCR). Similar to most metazoans, both mitogenomes and their protein-coding genes encoded on the H-strand displayed typical positive AT skews and negative GC skews. Bayesian inference and maximum-likelihood phylogenetic analyses were conducted on the basis of partitioned data of mitogenomes and two identical topologies were observed. The family-level phylogenetic relationships ((((Pellorneidae, Leiothrichidae) Timaliidae) Zosteropidae) Sylviidae) among the superfamily Sylvioidea were strongly supported. Within the family Pellorneidae, A. morrisonia clustered with N. epilepidota. Within Leiothrichidae, we further demonstrated that Babax lanceolatus is sister to Garrulax perspicillatus, and Spizixos semitorques was nested within the genus Pycnonotus according to the mitogenomic data and we propose that the generic placement of Spizixos should be reconsidered.

A new species, Entoloma lushanense, is described and illustrated from the Jiangxi Province of China. It is characterized by a small brownish grey pileus with obtuse umbo, heterodiametric spores, a pileipellis as a cutis with a subpellis, and the absence of cystidia and clamp-connections. These morphological characteristics and the phylogenetic analyses (Bayesian Inference and Maximum Likelihood) supported the uniqueness of the species and its taxonomic status within the subgenus Nolanea.

Neostagonosporellasichuanensis sp. nov. was found on Phyllostachysheteroclada collected from Sichuan Province in China and is introduced in a new genus Neostagonosporella gen. nov. in this paper. Evidence for the placement of the new taxon in the family Phaeosphaeriaceae is supported by morphology and phylogenetic analysis of a combined LSU, SSU, ITS and TEF 1-α DNA sequence dataset. Maximum-likelihood, maximum-parsimony and Bayesian inference phylogenetic analyses support Neostagonosporella as a distinct genus within this family. The new genus is compared with related genera of Phaeosphaeriaceae and full descriptions and illustrations are provided. Neostagonosporella is characterised by its unique suite of characters, such as multiloculate ascostromata and cylindrical to fusiform, transversely multiseptate, straight or curved ascospores, which are widest at the central cells. Conidiostromata are multiloculate, fusiform to long fusiform or rhomboid, with two types conidia; macroconidia vermiform or subcylindrical to cylindrical, transversely multiseptate, sometimes curved, almost equidistant between septa and microconidia oval, ellipsoidal or long ellipsoidal, aseptate, rounded at both ends. An updated phylogeny of the Phaeosphaeriaceae based on multigene analysis is provided.
