Partial Model-Checking (PMC) is an efficient tool to reduce the combinatorial explosion of a state-space, arising in the verification of loosely-coupled software systems. At the same time, it is useful to consider quantitative temporal-modalities. This allows for checking whether satisfying such a desired modality is too costly, by comparing the final score consisting of how much the system spends to satisfy the policy, to a given threshold. We stir these two ingredients together in order to provide a Quantitative PMC function (QPMC), based on the algebraic structure of semirings. We design a method to extract part of the weight during QPMC, with the purpose to avoid the evaluation of a modality as soon as the threshold is crossed. Moreover, we extend classical heuristics to be quantitative, and we investigate the complexity of QPMC.Keyword: Partial Model Checking, Semirings, Optimisation, Quantitative Modal Logic Quantitative Process Algebra, Quantitative Evaluation of Systems.

Abstract We introduce a substructural modal logic of utility that can be used to reason aboutoptimality with respect to properties of states. Our notion of state is quite general, and is able to represent resource allocation problems in distributed systems. The underlying logic is a variant of the modal logic of bunched implications, and based on resource semantics, which is closely related to concurrent separation logic. We consider a labelled transition semantics and establish conditions under which Hennessy—Milner soundness and completeness hold. By considering notions of cost, strategy and utility, we are able to formulate characterizations of Pareto optimality, best responses, and Nash equilibrium within resource semantics. We also show that our logic is able to serve as a logic for a fully featured process algebra and explain the interaction between utility and the structure of processes.

The connection of the modern psychology and formal systems remains an important direction of research. This paper is centered on philosophical problems surrounding relations between mental and logic. Main attention is given to philosophy of logic but certain ideas are introduced that can be incorporated into the practical philosophical logic. The definition and properties of basic modal logic and descending ones which are used in study of mental activity are in view. The defining role of philosophical interpretation of modality for the particular formal system used for research in the field of psychological states of agents is postulated. Different semantics of modal logic are studied. The hypothesis about the connection of research in cognitive psychology (semantics of brain activity) and formal systems connected to research of psychological states is stated.
