AbstractWe present a global study of Hɪ spectral line mapping for 16 Hickson Compact Groups (HCGs) combining new and unpublished VLA data, plus the analysis of the Hɪ content of individual galaxies. Sixty percent of the groups show morphological and kinematical signs of perturbations (from multiple tidal features to concentration of the Hɪ in a single enveloping cloud) and sixty five of the resolved galaxies are found to be Hɪ deficient with respect to a sample of isolated galaxies. In total, 77% of the groups suffer interactions among all its members which provides strong evidence of their reality. We find that dynamical evolution does not always produce Hɪ deficiency, but when this deficiency is observed, it appears to correlate with a high group velocity dispersion and in some cases with the presence of a first-ranked elliptical. The X-ray data available for our sample are not sensitive enough for a comparison with the Hɪ mass; however this study does suggest a correlation between Hɪ deficiency and hot gas since velocity dispersions are known from the literature to correlate with X-ray luminosity.

Context. The X-ray Integral Field Unit (X-IFU) that will be on board the Athena telescope will provide an unprecedented view of the intracluster medium (ICM) kinematics through the observation of gas velocity, ν, and velocity dispersion, w, via centroid-shift and broadening of emission lines, respectively. Aims. The improvement of data quality and quantity requires an assessment of the systematics associated with this new data analysis, namely biases, statistical and systematic errors, and possible correlations between the different measured quantities. Methods. We have developed an end-to-end X-IFU simulator that mimics a full X-ray spectral fitting analysis on a set of mock event lists, obtained using SIXTE. We have applied it to three hydrodynamical simulations of a Coma-like cluster that include the injection of turbulence. This allowed us to assess the ability of X-IFU to map five physical quantities in the cluster core: emission measure, temperature, metal abundance, velocity, and velocity dispersion. Finally, starting from our measurements maps, we computed the 2D structure function (SF) of emission measure fluctuations, ν and w, and compared them with those derived directly from the simulations. Results. All quantities match with the input projected values without bias; the systematic errors were below 5%, except for velocity dispersion whose error reaches about 15%. Moreover, all measurements prove to be statistically independent, indicating the robustness of the fitting method. Most importantly, we recover the slope of the SFs in the inertial regime with excellent accuracy, but we observe a systematic excess in the normalization of both SFν and SFw ascribed to the simplistic assumption of uniform and (bi-)Gaussian measurement errors. Conclusions. Our work highlights the excellent capabilities of Athena X-IFU in probing the thermodynamic and kinematic properties of the ICM. This will allow us to access the physics of its turbulent motions with unprecedented precision.

We present results of the optical identification of a spatially complete, flux limited sample of about 700 ROSAT All-Sky X-ray sources contained in 6 study areas north of δ = −9° with |bII|> 20° (including one region near the North Galactic pole (NGP), another one near the North Ecliptic pole (NEP)). Countrate limits are 0.01 cts s–1 near the NEP and 0.03 cts s–1 for the other areas. The optical observations were performed at the 2.15-m telescope of the Guillermo Haro Observatory, Mexico, using the Landessterwarte Faint Object Spectrograph Camera which allows to carry out direct CCD imaging and multi-object spectroscopy. The limiting magnitude is about 19m for spectroscopy and about 23m for B and R direct imaging. Our analysis shows a dependency of the ratio of ‘extragalactic’ (e.g., AGN, cluster of galaxies) to ‘stellar’ (e.g., coronal emitters, active binaries) counterparts on NH. In the area near the NGP (low NH) ‘extragalactic’ counterparts dominate, while in the area with the highest NH ‘stellar’ counterparts dominate.
