Intentionality and Constraint in Conceptual Blending

This chapter proposes a systems-theoretic adjustment to conceptual blending theory with respect to the so-called generic space. In creative conceptualization, the generic space is not an optional by-product of conceptual mappings across previously and otherwise constituted input spaces, but rather their effective cause, and not by selecting for them but by massively constraining against anything not them. As a first approximation of the blend’s targeted or intended meaning, the generic space functions as an indispensable “proto-blend” that sets the parameters and satisfaction conditions for the resulting conceptual network. This underappreciated point is elaborated through case studies of three well-known and increasingly complex creative blends: a sentence-level metaphor (“This surgeon is a butcher!”), an extemporaneous discourse exchange (from the live radio talk show “Loveline”), and a highly iconic lyric poem (Richard Wilbur’s “Piazza di Spagna, Early Morning”).

The objectives of study are to find out the maxims which are flouted, to find out the process of dominant flouting maxims and to find out the reasons of dominant flouting maxims. This research is conducted by document qualitative analysis research design. The data are the utterances of some conversations which were flouted. The data source of this research was taken from ILC Talk Show with the topic “KPK VS POLRI: Ujungnya sampai dimana?” broadcast on February 15th, 2014 that was obtained from the video on internet. The data were analyzed by using Miles and Huberman (1994). The result shows that all types of maxims are flouted by participants namely: maxim of quantity, maxim of quality, maxim of relevance and maxim of manner.. The second most frequently is flouting maxim of relevance twenty-one occurrences, flouting maxim of manner with six occurrencesand  flouting maxim of quality with three occurrences. The most dominant reasons were usually carried out by giving detail explanation to give more information to stress and to expect something in order to make the intended meaning clearer for the listener to follow. It is suggested the reader comprehend the flouting maxim deeply so that they can choose which one is appropriate and which one is not applied in their conversation. Key words: flouting maxim, Indonesia lawyers club, talk show

AbstractThis article traces ‘difficult guests’ who violate the tacit rules that guide interactions between talk show hosts and their guests, between news anchors and their interviewees. The goal is to theorize the appearance of such guests on television against the background of four case studies. Using the media events and media scandals concepts as well as more recent work on ‘mediatization’, a new category of remarkable media occurrences is developed. Such ‘media incidents’ capture the resistance to media routines as well as the incorporation of resistance into those very routines. I will illustrate how media incidents make visible, for large audiences, the media’s daily habitual construction of reality. Despite their complex, even ambivalent nature, it is argued that media incidents perform a more critical function for citizens in media-saturated societies than both media events and scandals.

I'm not a science fiction expert. Nor am i an academic, although i used to be one, sort of. Although I'm a writer, I'm not primarily a writer of science fiction. In this genre I'm a dilettante and a dabbler, an amateur—which last word, rightly translated, means “lover.” I got into hot water recently on a radio talk show in Britain: the radio person said she'd just been to a sci-fi conference there, and some people were really, really mad at me. Why? said I, mystified. For being mean to science fiction, said she. In what way had I been mean? I asked. For saying you didn't write it, she replied. And I having had the nerve to win the Arthur C. Clarke Award for Science Fiction.
