Connecting College and the Workplace Through Pathway Development in Kansas

To meet the high demand for skilled workers in health care and advanced manufacturing, three higher education institutions in Kansas recently strengthened their training in these fields through a U.S. Department of Labor’s Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training program. From 2013 to 2018, the Washburn Institute of Technology, Washburn University, and the Wichita State University Campus of Applied Sciences and Technology partnered with employers to develop industry-aligned career pathways by introducing new specialties, upgrading curricula and equipment, and introducing new credentials and options for further education. This chapter describes the changes that the institutions made to equip their students with the skills needed to meet critical workforce needs.

The 20,000-student Boise State University campus is located about 3 km from the center of the city of Boise. There is a significant amount of travel between the campus and the city center as students and staff travel to the city to visit restaurants, shops, and entertainment centers. Currently, people make this trip by car, shuttle bus, bike, or walking modes. Cars and shuttle buses, which share the same road network, constitute about 76% of the total trips. As road congestion is expected to grow in the future, it is prudent to look for other modes that can fulfill the travel demand. One potential mode is an aerial tramway. However, an aerial tramway is not a common mode of urban travel in the US. This research describes how the stated preference method was used to estimate demand for a mode that does not currently exist. An online stated preference survey was sent out to 8681 students, faculty, and staff and 1821 valid responses were received. Only about 35% of the respondents expressed their willingness to choose an aerial tramway for various combinations of cost and convenience of the new mode. Respondents were also found to favor convenience over cost for the new mode.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to ascertain how two urban principals, in high schools that feature comprehensive college-and-career readiness practices, utilize distributed leadership to facilitate their implementation. Design/methodology/approach This study employed qualitative methods. Drawing upon semi-structured interview data, observational data gathered as part of site visits, and internal and electronic documents, case descriptions were developed of each school, focusing on principals’ activities in support of career pathways. Findings The principals contributed significantly to their schools’ college-and-career readiness reforms and programming. Although their approaches were distinct, six common themes were identified: facilitating processes to form a shared vision, developing relational trust, a focus on learning, successful partnerships, conducive structures, and developing leadership skills and capacity. The principals described utilizing distributed leadership approaches – including practices, structures, and tools – to support these reforms. Originality/value This study represents the initial phase of a multi-year research project investigating the implementation of college-and-career pathways in urban communities. Prior research has overlooked the important role of principals in leading and facilitating these reforms, and this study contributes to the literature because it focuses on principals’ contributions in supporting college-and-career readiness. Additionally, in both cases, substantive, regular leadership contributions were made by business representatives external to the organization.

The Nizhny Novgorod State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering (NNSUACE) campus is located in Zapochainie, a historical area in Nizhny Novgorod, so the issues of revitalization of the historico-architectural environment and those concerning the methods of architectural design are interwoven in the text. The symbiotic relationship between education, science and practice used as a principal tool for the training of architects at NNSUACE made it possible to envision the evolution of the university campus. The article presents the projects proposed by professional architects and students in response to the need to meet both practical and ideological challenges – to transform the university campus into a viable public space.

The 12 Apps of Christmas course is a free open online course that has run at the Dublin Institute of Technology, Dublin, Ireland in both 2014 and 2015. The 2014 iteration of this course was aimed specifically at instructors and went on to win the Mobile Learning Division of the International E-Learning Award (iELA), and come joint third-place at the eLearning Excellence Awards run as part of the 14th European Conference on eLearning. The 2015 iteration was aimed primarily at students of all ages undertaking further education, third level education, and/or post-graduate study, but also included additional supporting information for educators. This case study sets out our experiences of designing and delivering the 2015 iteration of this innovative and effective student and educator support.
