A novel psychrotolerant, strictly aerobic, non-motile, rod-shaped bacterial strain, designated IM13T, was isolated from a sample taken from prehistoric guano paintings in Magura Cave, northwest Bulgaria and subjected to a polyphasic taxonomic study. Strain IM13T formed yellow colonies on LB agar plates and was Gram-staining-negative, heterotrophic and alkalitolerant. It grew optimally at pH 7.5 and 30 °C in the absence of NaCl. Phylogenetic analysis of the whole 16S rRNA gene revealed that strain IM13T branched with representatives of the genus Myroides with sequence similarity of 93–94 % with other species of the genus. The novel isolate contained iso-C15 : 0 (49.1 %), iso-C17 : 1ω9c (18.2 %) and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH (14.0 %) as dominant fatty acids. The DNA G+C content of strain IM13T was 33.5 mol%. Based on phylogenetic inference and phenotypic characteristics, it was concluded that strain IM13T represents a novel species of the genus Myroides , for which the name Myroides guanonis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is IM13T ( = DSM 26542T = NBIMCC 8736T).

A Gram-staining-positive, strictly aerobic, spherical, non-motile, red-pigmented bacterium, designated strain MK03T, was isolated from a soil sample collected in South Korea. The taxonomic position of the novel strain was investigated using a polyphasic approach. In phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences, strain MK03T was placed in a clade formed by members of the genus Deinococcus in the family Deinococcaceae and appeared to be most closely related to Deinococcus aerolatus 5516T-9T (97.4 % sequence similarity), Deinococcus marmoris AA-63T (97.2 %), Deinococcus radiopugnans ATCC 19172T (97.2 %) and Deinococcus saxicola AA-1444T (96.9 %). The genomic DNA G+C content of the novel strain was 64.5 mol%. The chemotaxonomic characteristics of strain MK03T were typical of members of the genus Deinococcus : MK-8 was identified as the predominant respiratory quinine, the major fatty acids were C16 : 1ω7c, C15 : 1ω6c, C16 : 0 and C15 : 0, ornithine was found to be the diamino acid in the cell-wall peptidoglycan and the novel strain showed resistance to gamma radiation, with a D10 value (i.e. the dose required to reduce the bacterial population by 10-fold) in excess of 9 kGy. In hybridization experiments, only low DNA–DNA relatedness values (11.6–34.5 %) were recorded between the novel strain and its closest relatives in the genus Deinococcus . Based on the phylogenetic, chemotaxonomic, phenotypic and DNA–DNA relatedness data, strain MK03T represents a novel species of the genus Deinococcus , for which the name Deinococcus humi sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is MK03T ( = KCTC 13619T  = JCM 17915T).

A Gram-staining-negative, yellow-pigmented, non-motile, strictly aerobic, rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain CNU001T, was isolated from seawater collected on the coast of Jeju Island, South Korea, and subjected to a polyphasic taxonomic study. The temperature, pH and NaCl ranges for growth were 10–30 °C, pH 6.0–10.0 and 2.0–5.0 %, respectively. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain CNU001T belonged to the genus Erythrobacter in the family Erythrobacteraceae , with Erythrobacter longus DSM 6997T (96.6 % sequence similarity), Erythrobacter gaetbuli SW-161T (96.3 %), Erythrobacter vulgaris 022 2-10T (96.2 %), Erythrobacter nanhaisediminis T30T (96.1 %) and other members of the genus Erythrobacter (<96.0 %) identified as the novel strain’s closest relatives. The major cellular fatty acids were C18 : 1ω7c and C17 : 1ω6c. The polar lipids were found to be diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylglycerol, one sphingoglycolipid, one unidentified aminolipid and six other unidentified lipids. The major respiratory quinone was ubiquinone-10 (UQ-10) and the genomic DNA G+C content of the novel strain was 58.9 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic, phylogenetic and genotypic data, strain CNU001T represents a novel species within the genus Erythrobacter , for which the name Erythrobacter jejuensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CNU001T ( = KCTC 23090T  = JCM 16677T).

A pink-pigmented, chemo-organotrophic bacterium, designated strain 03SUJ4T, was isolated from the freshwater of Juam reservoir, Republic of Korea (35° 03′ 43′′ N 127° 14′ 15′′ E). Cells were aerobic, Gram-reaction-negative and non-motile rods. Strain 03SUJ4T grew at pH 6–7 (optimum, pH 6) and at 15–30 °C (optimum, 25 °C). Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that the isolate belonged to the genus Terriglobus , showing sequence similarities of 97.09 % and 96.82 % to Terriglobus roseus DSM 18391T and Terriglobus saanensis SP1PR4T, respectively. Low rpoB gene sequence similarity with members of the genus Terriglobus and different fingerprints with the repetitive primers BOX, ERIC and REP indicated that the isolate represented a novel species of the genus Terriglobus . The major cellular fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, C16 : 0, C20 : 1ω9c, C14 : 0 and summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c/C16 : 1ω6c). The DNA G+C content of strain 03SUJ4T was 63.2±0.1 mol% (mean±sd of three determinations). The predominant menaquinone was MK-8. The major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol and two unidentified phospholipids. Several phenotypic characteristics served to differentiate the novel isolate from recognized members of the genus Terriglobus . On the basis of the evidence presented in this study, a novel species, Terriglobus aquaticus sp. nov. is proposed for strain 03SUJ4T ( = KCTC 23332T = JCM 17517T).

A Gram-staining-negative, non-spore-forming, non-gliding and rod-shaped bacterial strain KYW566T, was isolated from seawater of the Suncheon Bay, Korea, and its taxonomic position was investigated by using a polyphasic study. The cells contained MK-6 as the only respiratory quinone and contained iso-C15 : 0 (13.8 %), iso-C16 : 0 3-OH (13.1 %), anteiso-C15 : 0 (9.3 %), iso-C15 : 0 3-OH (8.7 %), iso-C15 : 1 G (6.3 %) and summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c and/or C16 : 1ω6c) (6.0 %) as the major fatty acids. The DNA G+C content of strain KYW566T was 41.6±0.8 mol% (mean±sd of three determinations). A phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain KYW566T forms an evolutionary lineage within the radiation enclosing the members of the genus Lutibacter with Lutibacter flavus IMCC1507T as its nearest neighbour (96.7 % sequence similarity). A number of phenotypic characteristics distinguished strain KYW566T from described members of the genus Lutibacter . On the basis of the evidences presented in this study, strain KYW566T represents a novel species, for which the name Lutibacter agarilyticus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is KYW566T ( = KCTC 23842T = JCM 18281T).

A novel Gram-staining-negative, facultatively anaerobic, motile and rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain LHW37T, was isolated from a dead ark clam collected on the south coast of Korea. The novel strain grew optimally at 37 °C, at pH 7.0–8.0 and with 2 % (w/v) NaCl. The predominant cellular fatty acids were C18 : 1ω7c and summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c and/or iso-C15 : 0 2-OH). The major isoprenoid quinone was ubiquinone-8 (Q-8) and the predominant polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylglycerol. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that the novel strain was most closely related to Neptunomonas japonica JAMM 0745T (97.1 % sequence similarity). The genomic DNA G+C content of strain LHW37T was 48.2 mol%. The DNA–DNA relatedness values recorded in hybridization experiments between the novel strain and its closest known relative were ≤18 %. Based on the phenotypic, genotypic and phylogenetic data, strain LHW37T represents a novel species belonging to the genus Neptunomonas for which the name Neptunomonas concharum sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is LHW37T ( = KACC 15543T  = JCM 17730T). An emended description of the genus Neptunomonas is also provided.

A Gram-staining-negative, strictly aerobic, non-gliding, rod-shaped bacterial strain, designated SW105T, was isolated from a seawater sample collected from the Indian Ocean. The strain produced flexirubin-type pigments and grew at 15–45 °C (optimum, 35 °C), at pH 5.5–8.5 (optimum, pH 7.0–7.5) and in the presence of 0–5.0 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 1.0–1.5 %). The predominant cellular fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, summed feature 3 (comprising C16 : 1ω7c and/or C16 : 1ω6c), iso-C17 : 1ω9c and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH. The major menaquinone was menaquinone 6 (MK-6) and the major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine and two unidentified aminophospholipids. The genomic DNA G+C content of strain SW105T was 36.2 mol%. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that the novel isolate was related to members of the genus Flavobacterium , showing the highest similarity to Flavobacterium ummariense DS-12T and Flavobacterium ceti CCUG 52969T (94.3 and 93.0 % sequence similarity, respectively). On the basis of phylogenetic inference and phenotypic characteristics, it is proposed that strain SW105T represents a novel species of the genus Flavobacterium , for which the name Flavobacterium marinum sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is SW105T ( = CGMCC 1.10825T = JCM 18132T).

An autotrophic, hydrogenotrophic methanogen, designated strain 17A1T, was isolated from the profundal sediment of the meromictic Lake Pavin, France. The cells of the novel strain, which were non-motile, Gram-staining-negative rods that measured 2–15 µm in length and 0.2–0.4 µm in width, grew as filaments. Strain 17A1T grew in a mineral medium and its growth was stimulated by the addition of yeast extract, vitamins, acetate or rumen fluid. Penicillin, vancomycin and kanamycin reduced growth but did not completely inhibit it. Growth occurred at 14–41 °C (optimum 30 °C), at pH 5.0–8.5 (optimum pH 6.5) and with 0–0.4 M NaCl (optimum 0.1 M). The novel strain utilized H2/CO2 and methanol/H2 as substrates but not formate, acetate, methylamine/H2, isobutanol or 2-propanol. Its genomic DNA G+C content was 37.0 mol%. In phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences, strain 17A1T appeared to be a member of the genus Methanobacterium , with Methanobacterium beijingense 8-2T (96.3 % sequence similarity) identified as the most closely related established species. Based on phenotypic and phylogenetic data, strain 17A1T represents a novel species of methanogen within the genus Methanobacterium , for which the name Methanobacterium lacus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 17A1T ( = DSM 24406T = JCM 17760T).

A novel Gram-staining-positive, rod-shaped, motile, strictly aerobic, endospore-forming bacterium, designated WCC 4585T, was isolated from a pharmaceutical production line. The organism grew optimally at 30 °C, at pH 8 and in the presence of 0.5 % (w/v) NaCl. Oval endospores were formed subterminally and terminally in swollen sporangia. The cell-wall diamino acid was meso-diaminopimelic acid (type A1γ) and the genomic DNA G+C content was 38.7 mol%. The major menaquinone was MK-7. The cellular fatty acid profile contained major amounts of iso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C15 : 0 and anteiso-C17 : 0, and the cellular phospholipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and aminophospholipid. The isolate was most closely related to Bacillus oceanisediminis H2T, Bacillus infantis SMC 4352-1T, Bacillus firmus NCIMB 9366T, Bacillus circulans ATCC 4513T and Bacillus horneckiae DSM 23495T with which it shared less than 98.0 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity. DNA–DNA relatedness values between strain WCC 4585T and five type strains of related species were ≤27 % and sequence similarity values based on groEL sequences were ≤88.7 %. On the basis of the characteristics presented, strain WCC 4585T is proposed to represent a novel species, Bacillus gottheilii sp. nov. The type strain is WCC 4585T( = DSM 23668T = CCUG 59876T = LMG 25856T).

A novel yellow-pigmented bacterial strain, designated ARSA-19T, was isolated from a freshwater reservoir in Cheonan, Korea. Cells were Gram-staining-negative, rod-shaped, strictly aerobic and positive for catalase and oxidase. The phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain ARSA-19T belonged to the genus Flavobacterium and was related to Flavobacterium macrobrachii an-8T (96.5 % sequence similarity), F. koreense KACC 14969T (96.2 %), F. chungnamense KACC 14971T (96.1 %), F. cheonanense KACC 14972T (96.4 %) and F. aquatile ATCC 11947T (95.6 %). The isolate contained MK-6 as the predominant menaquinone and iso-C15 : 0 (21.8 %), iso-C16 : 0 3-OH (10.4 %), iso-C15 : 1 G (9.3 %), summed feature 3 (iso-C15 : 0 2-OH and/or C16 : 1ω7c; 8.2 %), iso-C15 : 0 3-OH (7.7 %) and iso-C16 : 0 (7.3 %) as the major fatty acids. The polar lipids of strain ARSA-19T were phosphatidylethanolamine, four unknown aminolipids and two unidentified polar lipids. The DNA G+C content of strain ARSA-19T was 33.3 mol%. Based on its phenotypic and genotypic characteristics and on the phylogenetic evidence presented, strain ARSA-19T is considered to represent a novel species in the genus Flavobacterium , for which the name Flavobacterium dankookense sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is ARSA-19T ( = KCTC 23179T  = JCM 17065T  = KACC 14968T). Emended descriptions of Flavobacterium cheonanense , Flavobacterium chungnamense , Flavobacterium koreense and Flavobacterium aquatile are also proposed.

A Gram-reaction-negative, strictly aerobic, non-motile, non-spore-forming and rod-shaped bacterial strain, designated THG-45T, was isolated from soil of a ginseng field of Pocheon province in the Republic of Korea and its taxonomic position was investigated by a polyphasic approach. Growth occurred at 4–30 °C, at pH 5.5–9.0 and with 0–2 % (w/v) NaCl on nutrient agar. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity, strain THG-45T was shown to belong to the genus Pedobacter and was related to Pedobacter borealis G-1T (98.8 %), P. alluvionis NWER-II11T (97.9 %), P. agri PB92T (97.9 %), P. terrae DS-57T (97.5 %), P. suwonensis 15-52T (97.4 %), P. sandarakinus DS-27T (97.0 %) and P. soli 15-51T (97.0 %), but DNA relatedness between strain THG-45T and these strains was below 36 %. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 39 mol%. The only isoprenoid quinone detected in strain THG-45T was menaquinone-7 (MK-7). The predominant fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, summed feature 3 (comprising C16 : 1ω6c and/or C16 : 1ω7c) and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH, and the major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine and an unidentified aminophosphoglycolipid. Phenotypic data and phylogenetic inference supported the affiliation of strain THG-45T to the genus Pedobacter , and a number of biochemical tests differentiated strain THG-45T from the recognized species of the genus Pedobacter . Therefore, the novel isolate represents a novel species, for which the name Pedobacter ginsenosidimutans sp. nov. is proposed, with THG-45T as the type strain ( = KACC 14530T = JCM 16721T).
