The taxonomic positions of two novel actinomycetes, designated strains BNT558T and SM3501T, were established by using a polyphasic approach. The organisms had chemical and morphological features that were consistent with their classification in the genus Streptomyces . The whole-cell hydrolysates of the two strains contained ll-diaminopimelic acid as the diagnostic diamino acid. The predominant menaquinones were MK-9(H6) and MK-9(H8) for strain BNT558T and MK-9(H8) and MK-9(H6) for strain SM3501T. Major fatty acids of the strains were anteiso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C17 : 0 and iso-C16 : 0. The polar lipid profile of strain BNT558T contained diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol, one unidentified glycolipid and one unidentified aminophospholipid, while that of strain SM3501T consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylethanolamine, three unidentified atypical aminolipids, one unidentified aminolipid and two unidentified glycolipids. The G+C contents of the genomic DNA were 70.2 and 69.6 mol% for strains BNT558T and SM3501T, respectively. 16S rRNA gene sequence data supported the classification of the isolates in the genus Streptomyces and showed that they formed two distinct branches within the genus. Based on almost-complete 16S rRNA gene sequences, strain BNT558T was related most closely to Streptomyces albiaxialis NRRL B-24327T and strain SM3501T was related most closely to Streptomyces cacaoi subsp. cacaoi NBRC 12748T. DNA–DNA relatedness between each of the isolates and its closest phylogenetic neighbours showed that they belonged to distinct species. The two isolates were readily distinguished from one another and from the type strains of the other species classified in the genus Streptomyces based on a combination of phenotypic and genotypic properties. Based on the genotypic and phenotypic evidence, strains BNT558T and SM3501T belong to two novel species in the genus Streptomyces , for which the names Streptomyces iconiensis sp. nov. (type strain BNT558T = KCTC 29198T = DSM 42109T) and Streptomyces smyrnaeus sp. nov. (type strain SM3501T = KCTC 29214T = DSM 42105T) are proposed, respectively.

A Gram-stain-positive, aerobic, non-motile, non-spore-forming and coccus-shaped strain, designated strain G463T, was isolated from the rhizosphere soil of Salicornia europaea L. collected from Lake Gudzhirganskoe in Siberia. Based on 16S rRNA gene phylogeny, strain G463T belonged to the genus Hoyosella , with the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to Hoyosella altamirensis DSM 45258T (96.1%). The major fatty acids were C17:1 ω8c, C16:0, C15 : 0 and C17:0. The strain contained meso-diaminopimelic acid as the cell-wall diagnostic diamino acid and arabinose, galactose and ribose as the whole-cell sugars. MK-8 and MK-7 were the predominant menaquinones. The polar lipid profile comprised diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol, one unidentified phosphoglycolipid, two unidentified glycolipids and several unidentified lipids. Acetyl was the muramyl residue. Mycolic acids (C28–C34) were present. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 68.3 mol%. Based on its phylogenetic, phenotypic and chemotaxonomic features, strain G463T was considered to represent a novel species of the genus Hoyosella , for which the name Hoyosella lacisalsi sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is G463T (=JCM 33650T=CGMCC 1.17230T).

A novel filamentous bacterium, designated Nari11AT, was isolated from soil collected from a salt lake named Chott Melghir, located in north-eastern Algeria. The strain is an aerobic, halophilic, thermotolerant, Gram-stain-positive bacterium, growing at NaCl concentrations between 5 and 20 % (w/v) and at 43–60 °C and pH 5.0–10.0. The major fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C15 : 0 and iso-C17 : 0. The DNA G+C content was 53.4 mol%. ll-Diaminopimelic acid was the diamino acid of the peptidoglycan. The major menaquinone was MK-7, but MK-6 and MK-8 were also present in trace amounts. The polar lipid profile consisted of phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylmonomethylethanolamine and three unidentified phospholipids. Results of molecular and phenotypic analyses led to the description of the strain as a novel member to the genus Melghirimyces , family Thermoactinomycetaceae . Strain Nari11AT shows 96.7 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to the type strain of Melghirimyces algeriensis . On the basis of phenotypic, physiological and phylogenetic data, strain Nari11AT ( = DSM 45514T  = CCUG 60050T) represents the type strain of a novel species, for which the name Melghirimyces thermohalophilus sp. nov. is proposed.

The Gram-strain-negative, rod-shaped, facultatively anaerobic, non-motile bacterial strain, designated S1-10T, was isolated from marine sediment. Strain S1-10T grew at 4–42 °C (optimally at 30–35 °C), at pH 7.0–10 (optimally at pH 9) and in the presence of 0.5–8 % (w/v) NaCl. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain S1-10T was related to the genus Aequorivita and had highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to Aequorivita viscosa 8-1bT (97.7%). The predominant cellular fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0 and anteiso-C15 : 0. The main respiratory quinone was menaquinone 6 (MK-6). The genomic DNA G+C content of strain S1-10T was 34.6 mol%. The polar lipid profile of strain S1-10T contained phosphatidylethanolamine, two aminolipids, two glycolipids, one phosphoglycolipid and three unidentified polar lipids. In addition, the maximum values of in silico DNA–DNA hybridization (isDDH) and average nucleotide identity (ANI) between strain S1-10T and A. viscosa CGMCC 1.11023T were 15.4 and 75.7 %, respectively. Combined data from phenotypic, phylogenetic, isDDH and ANI analyses demonstrated that strain S1-10T is the representative of a novel species of the genus Aequorivita , for which we propose the name Aequorivita sinensis sp. nov. (type strain S1-10T=CGMCC 1.12579T=JCM 19789T). We also propose that Vitellibacter todarodis and Vitellibacter aquimaris should be transferred into genus Aequorivita and be named Aequorivita todarodis comb. nov. and Aequorivita aquimaris comb. nov., respectively. The type strain of Aequorivita todarodis comb. nov. is MYP2-2T (= KCTC 62141T= NBRC 113025T) and the type strain of Aequorivita aquimaris comb. nov. is D-24T (=KCTC 42708T=DSM 101732T).

Two actinomycete strains, designated TRM 49117T and TRM 49136T, were isolated from a hypersaline habitat in Xinjiang Province, north-west China and were characterized taxonomically by using a polyphasic study. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain TRM 49117T had 93.93 % similarity with the type strain Glycomyces halotolerans TRM 40137T (GenBank accession no. HQ651156) and TRM 49136T had 94.32 % similarity with G. halotolerans TRM 40137T. The 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity between the two new isolates was 93 %. The isolates contained meso-diaminopimelic acid as the diagnostic diamino acid and anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C16 : 0 and anteiso-C17 : 0 as major cellular fatty acids. The predominant menaquinones of the isolates were MK-9(H4) and MK-9(H6). The whole-cell sugar patterns of these strains contained xylose and ribose, and strain TRM 49136T also contained arabinose. The polar lipid pattern of strain TRM 49117T comprised phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol mannosides, phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylinositol and three additional unknown phospholipids. The polar lipid pattern of strain TRM 49136T comprised phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol, glycolipids and two phosphoglycolipids of unknown composition. Genotypic and phenotypic data confirmed that strains TRM 49117T and TRM 49136T represent two novel species, clearly different from related species of the genus Glycomyces , for which the names Glycomyces fuscus sp. nov. (type strain TRM 49117T = CCTCC AA 2013003T = NRRL B-59998T = KACC 17682T) and Glycomyces albus sp. nov. (type strain TRM 49136T = CCTCC AA 2013004T = NRRL B-24927T = KACC 17681T) are proposed.

Two strains, PB34T and PB261T, were isolated from grass soil sampled in Daejeon, Republic of Korea. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence studies showed the two bacteria to be clearly affiliated with the phylum Actinobacteria and most closely related to the genus Geodermatophilus , showing 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities to the type strains of species of the genus Geodermatophilus of 95.0–96.3 % and sharing 98.5 % similarity between the two strains. The two strains were Gram-stain-positive, aerobic, motile and rod-shaped bacteria. The peptidoglycan contained meso-diaminopimelic acid as the diagnostic diamino acid. The predominant menaquinones were MK-9(H4) and MK-9(H0). The major fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, iso-C16 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 and summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c and/or C16 : 1ω6c) for strain PB34T and iso-C14 : 0, iso-C15 : 0, iso-C16 : 0 and C16 : 0 for strain PB261T. The G+C contents of the genomic DNA of strains PB34T and PB261T were 73.2 mol% and 74.1 mol%, respectively. Thus, based on the evidence of a polyphasic study, it is proposed that strains PB34T and PB261T represent two novel species, for which the names Geodermatophilus soli sp. nov. (type strain PB34T = KCTC 19880T = JCM 17785T) and Geodermatophilus terrae sp. nov. (type strain PB261T = KCTC 19881T = JCM 17786T) are proposed.

The taxonomic status of a carbendazim-degrading strain, mbc-2T, isolated from soil under the long-term application of carbendazim in China was determined by means of a polyphasic study. The cells were Gram-stain-positive, motile and rod-shaped. Strain mbc-2T grew optimally at pH 7.0, 30–35 °C and in the presence of 1 % (w/v) NaCl. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain mbc-2T fell within the genus Nocardioides , forming a coherent cluster with the type strain of Nocardioides hankookensis , with which it exhibited 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity values of 97.9 %. The chemotaxonomic properties of strain mbc-2T were consistent with those of the genus Nocardioides : the cell-wall peptidoglycan type was based on ll-2,6-diaminopimelic acid, the predominant menaquinone was MK-8 (H4) and the major fatty acid was iso-C16 : 0. The major polar lipids were phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, diphosphatidylglycerol, unknown phospholipids and an unknown aminolipid. The DNA G+C content was 72 mol%. Strain mbc-2T exhibited DNA–DNA relatedness values of 12.5±1.5 %, 23.7±2.7 % and 26.3±3.2 % with respect to Nocardioides hankookensis DS-30T, Nocardioides aquiterrae GW-9T and Nocardioides pyridinolyticus OS4T. On the basis of the data obtained, strain mbc-2T represents a novel species of the genus Nocardioides , for which the name Nocardioides soli sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is mbc-2T ( = KACC 17152T = CCTCC AB 2012934T).

A novel bacterium, XHU 5135T, belonging to the genus Aidingimonas , was isolated from a salt lake sample collected in Xinjiang Province, north-west PR China. The isolate was Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped and non-motile. The strain was catalase-positive and oxidase-negative. Growth occurred at NaCl concentrations of 5–25 % (optimum, 10–13 %), at 13–41 °C (35–37 °C) and at pH 6.0–10.0 (pH 7.0–8.0). The predominant ubiquinone was Q-9. The major fatty acids were C19 : 0 cyclo ω8c and C16 : 0. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 58.1 mol%. The affiliation of strain XHU 5135T with the genus Aidingimonas was confirmed by 16S rRNA gene sequence comparisons. The closest type strain was Aidingimonas halophile YIM 90637T, which showed a 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity of 97.5 %. The ANI value between XHU 5135T and the closest type strain was 80.01 %. The estimated digital DNA–DNA hybridization estimate value between strain XHU 5135T and the closest type strain was 22.80 %. Phenotypically, the characteristics of XHU 5135T were shown to differ from the most closely related species, A. halophila . On the basis of the data from this polyphasic study, strain XHU 5135T represents a novel species of the genus Aidingimonas , for which the name Aidingimonas lacisalsi sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is strain XHU 5135T (=CCTCC AB 2016344T=KCTC 42945T=DSM 104700T).

Two Gram-stain-positive, strictly aerobic, non-spore-forming actinobacterial strains, designated YC2-7T and YC5-17, were isolated from the Yongcheondonggul (larva cave) in Jeju, Republic of Korea and their taxonomic ranks were examined by a polyphasic approach. The 16S rRNA gene tree showed that the novel isolates occupied an independent position separated from recognized genera of the family Nocardiaceae . In the 92 core gene-based phylogenomic analysis, strain YC2-7T was loosely associated with the type strain of Aldersonia kummingensis with 66.2 % average amino acid identity. The 16S rRNA gene sequence simairity between the isolate and members of the family Nocardiaceae was below 96.7 %. The cell-wall peptidoglycan was meso-diaminopimelic acid as a diagnostic diamino acid. Whole-cell sugars consisted of arabinose, galactose and glucose. The predominant menaquinone was MK-8(H4, ω-cycl). The major polar lipids consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol and phosphatidylinositol mannoside. The cellular fatty acids consisted mainly of saturated and unsaturated components with small amounts of tuberculostearic acid. Mycolic acids of 52–58 carbon atoms were present. The DNA G+C content of the genome was 63.8 mol%. On the basis of combination of morphological and chemotaxonomic differences, in addition to phylogenetic distinctness, the novel isolates are considered to constitute members of a novel species of a new genus in the family Nocardiaceae , for which the name Antrihabitans stalactiti gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is YC2-7T (=KACC 19965T=DSM 108733T).

Two nifH gene-harbouring bacterial strains were isolated from rhizospheres of different vegetable plants grown in different regions of northern PR China. The two strains possessed almost identical 16S rRNA gene sequences. The average nucleotide identity (ANI) and digital DNA–DNA hybridization (dDDH) values between the two strains were 99.21 and 93.6% respectively, suggesting they belong to one species. Based on 16S rRNA gene phylogeny, the two strains were clustered together with Paenibacillus rhizophilus 7197T, Paenibacillus sabinae T27T and Paenibacillus forsythiae T98T, but on a separate branch. Novelty of the species was confirmed by ANI and dDDH comparisons between the type strain 7124T and its closest relatives, since the obtained values were considerably below the proposed thresholds for the species delineation. The genome size of strain 7124T was 5.40 Mb, comprising 5050 predicted genes with a DNA G+C content of 52.3 mol%. The polar lipids contained diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and three unidentified lipids. The major cellular fatty acids were anteiso-C15  :  0 (52.9%) and C16  :  0 (23.4 %). Menaquinone-7 was reported as the major respiratory quinone. The diamino acid in the cell-wall peptidoglycan was found to be meso-diaminopimelic acid. Based on phylogenetic, genomic, chemotaxonomic and phenotypic data, the two isolates are considered to represent a novel species of the genus Paenibacillus , for which the name Paenibacillus apii sp. nov. is proposed, with 7124T (=DSM 103172T=CGMCC 1.15689T) as type strain.

Three Gram-staining-positive, strictly aerobic, motile, catalase-positive, endospore-forming rods, designated WCC 4582T, WCC 4581 and WCC 4583, were isolated from two different food sources and a pharmaceuticals production site. The three isolates were highly similar in their 16S rRNA gene sequences (100 % similarity) and groEL sequences (99.2–100 % similarity), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopic fingerprints and other features tested. The isolates were most closely related to Bacillus horneckiae ; the isolates and the type strain of B. horneckiae shared 97.6 % and 89.6 % 16S rRNA gene and groEL sequence similarities, respectively. The organisms grew optimally at 30 °C, at pH 7 and in the presence of 0.5 % (w/v) NaCl. The cell-wall peptidoglycan of WCC 4582T contained meso-diaminopimelic acid (A1γ) and the genomic DNA G+C content was 36.4 mol%. DNA–DNA relatedness between strain WCC 4582T and B. horneckiae NRRL B-59162T was 17 %. The three isolates are considered to represent a novel species of the genus Bacillus , for which the name Bacillus kochii sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is WCC 4582T ( = DSM 23667T = CCUG 59877T = LMG 25855T).
