A Gram-negative, short rod-shaped micro-organism (CC-BB4T) was isolated on nutrient agar from soil from Sinshe in Taichung County, Taiwan. Analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence demonstrated that this isolate was novel, as it showed <92 % similarity to the sequences of species of the genera Labrys, Beijerinckia and Methylocystis. The micro-organism did not utilize methylamine or methanol as a substrate, but was able to use several organic acids. The fatty acid profile was different from those reported for the genera Labrys, Beijerinckia, Methylocystis, Angulomicrobium, Methylorhabdus and Methyloarcula. On the basis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, in combination with chemotaxonomic and physiological data, strain CC-BB4T represents a novel genus, for which the name Pseudolabrys gen. nov. is proposed. The type species is Pseudolabrys taiwanensis sp. nov., and the type strain of P. taiwanensis is CC-BB4T (=CCUG 51779T=CIP 108932T).

Two strains, KBL13T and GBL13, were isolated as one of intestinal lactobacilli from the faecal specimens from different thoroughbreds of the same farm where they were born in Hokkaido, Japan. They were Gram-positive, facultatively anaerobic, catalase-negative, non-spore-forming and non-motile rods. KBL13T and GBL13 homofermentatively metabolize glucose, and produce lactate as the sole final product from glucose. The 16S rRNA gene sequence, DNA–DNA hybridization, DNA G+C content and biochemical characterization indicated that these two strains, KBL13T and GBL13, belong to the same species. In the representative strain, KBL13T, the DNA G+C content was 34.3 mol%. Lactobacillus salivarius JCM 1231T (=ATCC 11741T; AF089108) is the type strain most closely related to the strain KBL13T as shown in the phylogenetic tree, and the 16S rRNA gene sequence identity showed 96.0 % (1425/1484 bp). Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis of this strain indicated that the two isolated strains belong to the genus Lactobacillus and that they formed a branch distinct from their closest relatives, L. salivarius, Lactobacillus aviarius, Lactobacillus saerimneri and Lactobacillus acidipiscis. DNA–DNA reassociation experiments with L. salivarius and L. aviarius confirmed that KBL13T represents a novel species, for which the name Lactobacillus hayakitensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is KBL13T (=JCM 14209T=DSM 18933T).

A Gram-positive, rod-shaped, endospore-forming organism, strain CCUG 47242T, was isolated from a sample of industrial starch production in Sweden. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis demonstrated that this isolate was moderately related to species of the genus Paenibacillus, with <94·4 % sequence similarity to all other hitherto described Paenibacillus species. Strain CCUG 47242T showed the greatest sequence similarity (96·5 %) to ‘Paenibacillus hongkongensis’ HKU3, a strain with a name that has not yet been validly published. Chemotaxonomic data [major menaquinone, MK-7 (98 %); major polar lipids, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, lysyl-phosphatidylglycerol, two unknown phospholipids, four unknown aminophospholipids; major fatty acids, iso-C16 : 0 and anteiso-C15 : 0] showed some significant differences when compared with the type species of the genus Paenibacillus, Paenibacillus polymyxa. Physiological and biochemical tests allowed clear phenotypic differentiation of strain CCUG 47242T from strain HKU3. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, in combination with chemotaxonomic data, strains CCUG 47242T and HKU3 represent two novel species of a new genus of endospore-forming bacteria for which we propose the names Cohnella thermotolerans gen. nov., sp. nov. (type strain CCUG 47242T=CIP 108492T=DSM 17683T) and Cohnella hongkongensis sp. nov. (type strain HKU3T=CCUG 49571T=CIP 107898T=DSM 17642T).

A Gram-negative, aerobic, halophilic bacterium, designated strain Iso 3T, was isolated from the East Sea in Korea. Strain Iso 3T was motile by means of polar flagella, occasionally formed rosette-like aggregates and contained 18 : 1ω7c as the dominant cellular fatty acid. Strain Iso 3T grew at NaCl concentrations of 1–10 % and temperatures of 4–30 °C. The optimal growth temperature was 20 °C. Analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed that this strain is affiliated with a subcluster of the Alphaproteobacteria. However, strain Iso 3T generated metabolic energy by sulfide oxidation. The 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity between strain Iso 3T and the type strain of the most closely related species, Sulfitobacter pontiacus, was 97.7 %. DNA–DNA relatedness between strain Iso 3T and Sulfitobacter pontiacus DSM 10014T was 24.1 %. On the basis of phenotypic properties and phylogenetic distinctiveness, strain Iso 3T is classified within a novel Sulfitobacter species, for which the name Sulfitobacter litoralis sp. nov. is proposed, with the type strain Iso 3T (=KCTC 12521T=DSM 17584T).

A yellowish-brown bacterium was isolated from photoheterotrophic enrichment cultures obtained from water samples of an aquaculture pond at Bhimunipatnam, India. Enrichment and isolation in a medium containing 2 % NaCl (w/v) yielded strain JA125T, the cells of which were rod-shaped and non-motile. On the basis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence, strain JA125T belongs to the class Alphaproteobacteria and is closely related to the type strains of Rhodovulum iodosum (96 %), Rhodovulum adriaticum (95 %), Rhodovulum robiginosum (95 %), Rhodovulum sulfidophilum (94 %) and Rhodovulum marinum (94 %). The cells of strain JA125T contained vesicular internal membranes and bacteriochlorophyll a and carotenoids of the spheroidene series. Strain JA125T grew optimally at 28 °C and at pH 7.0–8.0. The best growth occurred photoheterotrophically with a number of organic compounds serving as carbon sources and electron donors. The strain grew photoautotrophically, but chemoautotrophic growth did not occur. Strain JA125T was able to utilize sulfide, sulfate, thiosulfate and thioglycolate as sulfur sources. Biotin was required as a growth factor. The DNA G+C content was 58 mol%. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis and the morphological and physiological data, strain JA125T is significantly different from other species of the genus Rhodovulum and represents a novel species, for which the name Rhodovulum imhoffii sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is JA125T (=JCM 13589T=DSM 18064T).

A strain isolated from pleural fluid of a patient with suppurative pleuritis (strain GTC 3021T) was characterized in terms of its phenotypic and biochemical features, cellular fatty acid profile and phylogenetic position based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that the isolate was a member of the genus Prevotella. The isolate was related to Prevotella enoeca ATCC 51261T with about 92 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity. The strain was an obligately anaerobic, non-pigmenting, non-spore-forming, non-motile, Gram-negative rod. Although the phenotypic and biochemical characteristics of the strain were similar to those of P. enoeca JCM 12259T, the cellular fatty acid composition of the isolate was significantly different from that of P. enoeca JCM 12259T (C18 : 1 ω9c and anteiso-C15 : 0 fatty acid content). Based on these data, we propose a novel Prevotella species, Prevotella pleuritidis sp. nov., with the type strain GTC 3021T (=JCM 14110T =CCUG 54350T). The G+C content of the type strain is 45.4 mol%.

A novel bacterial strain designated CJ25T was isolated from the estuarine wetland of the Han river in Korea. Identification of this strain was carried out on the basis of polyphasic taxonomy. The isolate was Gram-staining-positive, rod-shaped, non-pigmented and motile. Phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed that the isolate was closely related to Paenibacillus chondroitinus DSM 5051T with 96.1 % similarity. The predominant fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0 (50.25 %), iso-C16 : 0 (18.54 %) and iso-C15 : 0 (10.00 %). The major isoprenoid quinone was MK-7. The G+C content of genomic DNA was 50 mol%. According to physiological data and 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, the isolate was discriminated from related members of the genus Paenibacillus. Therefore, strain CJ25T represents a novel species of the genus Paenibacillus, for which the name Paenibacillus aestuarii sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CJ25T (=KACC 13125T =JCM 15521T).

A collection of eight clinical strains from Belgian hospitals and three clinical strains of the CCUG collection were characterized biochemically as being similar to CDC groups II-h and II-c; the latter differs from group II-h only by positivity for sucrose acidification. These 11 strains were found to cluster according to 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity at a level of ≥99.5 %, and on the basis of their tDNA-PCR profile. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, this collection of strains was related most closely to Chryseobacterium hispanicum (97.2 %), but they differed from the type strain of this species by the following phenotypic characteristics: growth at 37 °C, negativity for xylose acidification, positivity for acetate assimilation–alkalinization on Simmons’ agar base and absence of flexirubin pigments, and by their tDNA-PCR profile. Strain NF802T showed only 57.8 % DNA–DNA relatedness to the type strain of C. hispanicum. Fatty acid composition did not enable differentiation from C. hispanicum. The DNA G+C content of strain NF802T is 36.5 mol%. The name Chryseobacterium hominis sp. nov. is proposed for this taxon, with type strain NF802T (=CCUG 52711T=CIP 109415T).

A bacterial strain (CC-TWGS1-8T) isolated from a tar-contaminated soil in Taiwan was studied in a detailed taxonomic study. The cells were Gram-negative, rod-shaped and non-spore-forming. Phylogenetic analyses using the 16S rRNA gene sequence of the strain clearly revealed an affiliation to the genus Chryseobacterium, the highest sequence similarities being to the type strain of Chryseobacterium indologenes (96·8 %), to Chryseobacterium gleum (96·8 %) and to Chryseobacterium joostei (96·4 %). The 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities to all other Chryseobacterium species were below 96 %. The major whole-cell fatty acids were 15 : 0 iso (35·4 %) and 17 : 0 iso 3OH (22·5 %). DNA–DNA hybridization values and the biochemical and chemotaxonomic properties demonstrate that strain CC-TWGS1-8T represents a novel species, for which the name Chryseobacterium taichungense sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CC-TWGS1-8T (=CCUG 50001T=CIP 108519T).

Two yellow-pigmented, Gram-stain-positive, aerobic, motile, short rod-shaped bacteria were isolated from natural teak tree rhizosphere soil and their taxonomic positions were determined by using a polyphasic approach. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that strains TG-S248T and TG-S240 formed a distinct phyletic line within the genus Leifsonia. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis of strain TG-S248T with sequences from Leifsonia shinshuensis DB 102T, L. poae VKM Ac-1401T, L. naganoensis DB 103T, L. aquatica DSM 20146T and L. xyli subsp. cynodontis JCM 9733T revealed pairwise similarities ranging from 98.7 to 99.1 %. The major fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C17 : 0 and iso-C16 : 0. The G+C content of the DNA of the type strain was 69.4 mol%. DNA–DNA hybridization experiments revealed low levels of DNA–DNA relatedness (32 % or less) between strain TG-S248T and its closest relatives. Based on differences in phenotypic and genotypic characteristics, strain TG-S248T (=LMG 24767T =JCM 15679T) is designated the type strain of a novel species of the genus Leifsonia, for which the name Leifsonia soli sp. nov. is proposed.
