Linear and nonlinear optical study on electrorheological (ER) fluids is reported. The ER fluids under the investigation were glass beads, zeolite and ferroelectrics. The linear optical response of some ER fluids showed sharp changes near critical electric fields. An enhancement of electric field induced second harmonic generations (EFISH) was observed as the function of E2, where E is the external electric field. The said enhancement is considered to be corresponding to a modulation of the material's refractive index associated with the electric field induced polarization of the delocalized electrons. The enhanced nonlinear optical response on the transition between liquid and solid states can be related to the phase transition in ER fluids.

The results of studies of shear elastic properties of a high-temperature superconducting (HTSC) of YBa2Cu3O7 - x ceramics in the vicinity of the phase transition to the superconducting state at at a temperature of 91.3 K, as well as at room temperature of 293 K are presented. For the first time, a local increase in the shear nonlinear acoustic parameter N was investigated. Experimental studies of the linear and nonlinear elastic properties of HTSC ceramics YBa2Cu3O7 - x in the region of the superconducting transition showed that the electronic phase transition has significant influence on its elastic properties. Based on the results of experimental measurements linear and nonlinear elastic parameters were determined both at room temperature and in the region phase transition temperature.

We examine nonlinear lattice excitations in a model for a solid which may undergo a displacive structural phase transition. In particular, we investigate the field equations for a diatomic chain of atoms including nonlinear potentials on one species. We identify three classes of excitations in this model. These are linearized phonons, large amplitude solitary waves, and nonlinear phonons. Interactions between the linear phonons and the nonlinear modes give rise to a translation mode which is a further solution of the field equations. The linear and nonlinear phonons are also direct solutions of the discrete equations of motion. However, using the molecular dynamics technique we find that kink-type configurations occur for a much larger parameter space in the discrete lattice than they do in the continuum description. All the stable excitations of the field equations should be included in a formal description (e.g. statistical mechanics) of the model.
