Long-distance submarine cable systems, such as the transoceanic system, generally consist of a series of cables and repeaters. Repeater units are spaced at regular intervals to boost the attenuated optical signal and presently contain optical amplifiers in a pressure vessel made of copper alloy. Since the repeater unit is more massive than the cable, it pulls the cable catenary locally toward the seabed. In the 1990s, several studies numerically simulated cable behavior in the water and showed that the seabed slack runs short, and the seabed cable tension increases just before the repeater reaches the seabed. Therefore, it has been pointed out that an unarmored cable with a polyethylene sheath can be easily damaged. However, no reports have been published regarding the actual situation of cable faults related to the laying of repeaters. This study quantitatively analyzes the mechanism of cable damage related to the laying of repeaters, based on experiments, simulations, maintenance records, and a comparative analysis between the simulation results and actual cable faults. Cost-effective methods to mitigate cable faults triggered by laying a repeater in the deep sea are also explored to ensure mechanical stability during the design lifetime.

Compared with AC (alternating current) transmission, DC(direct current) transmission has obvious superiority at high power, long distance, submarine cable transmission and asynchronous interconnected between exchange systems etc.. This paper constructed a kind of 12 pulse bridge UHV DC transmission system that includes control protection function through MATLAB/Simulink tool. By setting the breaker parameters, this paper studied the 12 pulse bridge UHV DC transmission system AC/DC side in case of setting down time, type and cleared. The simulation results demonstrate that this system has a good effect in harmonic control and it has no power compensations in realizing HV DC process, and it can completely work as an important reference in constructing HV DC power grid.

In order to balance reactive power, reduce line losses, prevent excessive power frequency and switching over-voltage and adjust and control the line voltage etc. The long-distance and high voltage transmission lines are needed reactive power compensation. High voltage overhead transmission lines and high voltage submarine cable (including mixed-submarine) transmission lines are different, for example, the capacitance in the submarine cable lines is larger than in the conventional overhead lines. Therefore, the reactive power compensation on the EHV transmission lines which contains submarine cable lines is focus on the compensation of submarine cable lines. The reactive power compensation in 500 kV AC submarine cable interconnection project for Hainan power grid and Guangdong power grid[1], which is the first 500 kV long-distance and high-capacity sea trails interconnection project in China and which is just completed soon, is researched by Electro-Magnetic Transient Program——PSCAD/EMTDC (Power System Computer Aided Design/ Electro Magnetic Transient in DC System in this paper). The simulation results verifies that the role of shunt reactor which could absorb charging power and suppress the power frequency overvoltage for the long-distance and high-capacity hybrid submarine cable lines. The conclusions can offer references to suppress power frequency overvoltage and the reactive power compensation in extra high voltage transmission lines which is the mixed mode of overhead transmission lines and submarine cables.
