This paper presents techniques for the application of tertiary and secondary voltage control through the use of intelligent proportional integral derivative (PID) controllers and the wide area measurement system (WAMS) in the IEEE 39 bus system (New England system). The paper includes power system partitioning, pilot bus selection, phasor measurement unit (PMU) placement, and optimal secondary voltage control parameter calculations to enable the application of the proposed voltage control. The power system simulation and analyses were performed using the DIgSILENT and MATLAB software applications. The optimal PMU placement was performed in order to apply secondary voltage control. The tertiary voltage control was performed through an optimal power flow optimization process in order to minimize the active power losses. Two different methods were used to design the PID secondary voltage control, namely, genetic algorithm (GA) and neural network based on genetic algorithm (NNGA). A comparison of system performances using these two methods under different operating conditions is presented. The results show that NNGA secondary PID controllers are more robust than GA ones. The paper also presents a comparison between system performance with and without secondary voltage control, in terms of voltage deviation index and total active power losses. The graph theory is used in system partitioning, and sensitivity analysis is used in pilot bus selection, the results of which proved their effectiveness.

This paper proposes a simple design procedure to solve the problem of controlling generator transient stability following large disturbances in power systems. A state-feedback excitation controller and power system stabilizer are designed to guarantee robustness against uncertainty in the system parameters. These controllers ensure satisfactory swing damping and quick decay of the voltage regulation error over a wide range of operating conditions. The controller performance is evaluated in a case study in which a three-phase short-circuit fault near the generator terminals in a four-bus power system is simulated.

The power electronic interface between a satellite electrical power system (EPS) with a photovoltaic main source and battery storage as the secondary power source is modelled based on the state space averaging method. Subsequently, sliding mode controller is designed for maximum power point tracking of the PV array and load voltage regulation. Asymptotic stability is ensured as well. Simulation of the EPS is accomplished using MATLAB. The results show that the outputs of the EPS have good tracking response, low overshoot, short settling time, and zero steady-state error. The proposed controller is robust to environment changes and load variations. Afterwards, passivity based controller is provided to compare the results with those of sliding mode controller responses. This comparison demonstrates that the proposed system has better transient response, and unlike passivity based controller, the proposed controller does not require reference PV current for control law synthesis.

The power flow calculation is study the steady-state operation of the power system as basic electrical calculations. It is given the power system network topology, device parameters and determines system health boundary conditions, draw a detailed operating status of the power system through numerical simulation methods, such as voltage amplitude and phase angle on the bus system the power distribution and the power loss. Flow calculation is the power system operation, planning and safety, reliability analysis, is fundamental to the system voltage regulation, network reconfiguration and reactive power optimization must call the function, so the trend has very important significance to calculate the power system.
