Due to the feature and the forms of motion of the gears, the vibration signal of the gear is mainly the frequency modulation, amplitude modulation, or hybrid modulation signal corresponding to the gear-mesh frequency and its double frequency signal. When faults arise on the gears, the number and shape of the modulation sideband will be changed. The structures and forms of the FM composition differ according to the type of faults. According to the above mentioned characteristic, this essay raises a method to disassemble the gear vibrate signal, points out the formulas to build up characteristic vector, on that basis, the essay raised a gear fault diagnosis method based on EMD and Hidden Markov Model (HMM), this method can identify the working condition of the normal gears, snaggletooth gears, and pitting gears.

The planetary gearbox is at the heart of most rotating machinery. The premature failure and subsequent downtime of a planetary gearbox not only seriously affects the reliability and safety of the entire rotating machinery but also results in severe accidents and economic losses in industrial applications. It is an important and challenging task to accurately detect failures in a planetary gearbox at an early stage to ensure the safety and reliability of the mechanical transmission system. In this paper, a novel method based on wavelet packet energy (WPE) and modulation signal bispectrum (MSB) analysis is proposed for planetary gearbox early fault diagnostics. First, the vibration signal is decomposed into different time-frequency subspaces using wavelet packet decomposition (WPD). The WPE is calculated in each time-frequency subspace. Secondly, the relatively high energy vectors are selected from a WPE matrix to obtain a reconstructed signal. The reconstructed signal is then subjected to MSB analysis to obtain the fault characteristic frequency for fault diagnosis of the planetary gearbox. The validity of the proposed method is carried out through analyzing the vibration signals of the test planetary gearbox in two fault cases. One fault is a chipped sun gear tooth and the other is an inner-race fault in the planet gear bearing. The results show that the proposed method is feasible and effective for early fault diagnosis in planetary gearboxes.

The local mean decomposition (LMD), a new adaptive time-frequency analysis method, is the research focus in the fault diagnosis field in recent years. In this paper, the LMD’s characteristics are obtained by processing multi-component frequency and amplitude modulation signal, which are usually used to describe the gear pitting corrosion fault signals. Base on the simulation analysis, LMD is presented to deal with the vibration signals of gear pitting corrosion fault, comparing with traditional method. The results show that the gear pitting corrosion defect can be diagnosed by LMD effectively, and LMD can eliminate the false composition effect, thus improving the accuracy of gear fault diagnosis.

Local mean decomposition(LMD),which is a new time-frequency method, can decompose a complex multicomponent modulation signal into a linear combination of a finite set of mono-component modulation signals. LMD integrates two signal processing procedures: decomposition and demodulation, and it can extract modulation feature efficiently. The basic theory and algorithm of LMD is introduced, and the effection of LMD is verified trough simulation. LMD is applied in gearbox fault diagnosis and successfully extracts modulation feature.
