Abstract Background Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCMP) is characterized by ventricular chamber enlargement and systolic dysfunction which may cause heart failure. Patients with DCMP have overactivation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone systems, which can also adversely affect myocardial metabolism in heart failure. The impairment of myocardial metabolism can contribute to the progression of left ventricular remodeling and contractile dysfunction in heart failure. Although angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs) have been used to treat patients with DCMP, there has been no direct comparison of the efficacy of these agents. The objective of this study is to compare the effects of olmesartan and valsartan on myocardial metabolism in patients with DCMP. Methods/design The OVOID study (a comparison study of Olmesartan and Valsartan On myocardial metabolism In patients with Dilated cardiomyopathy) is designed as a non-blinded, open-label, parallel-group, prospective, randomized, controlled, multicenter clinical trial. A total of 40 DCMP patients aged between 20 and 85 years will be randomly allocated into the olmesartan or the valsartan group. 18F-fluoro-2-deoxyglucose (FDG) cardiac positron emission tomography (PET) will be performed at baseline and six months after receiving the study agent. The primary endpoint is myocardial glucose consumption per square meter, measured using 18F-FDG PET 6 months after receiving the study agent. Discussion The purpose of this trial is to compare the efficacy between olmesartan and valsartan in improving myocardial metabolism in DCMP patients. This will be the first randomized comparative study investigating the differential effects of ARBs on heart failure. Trial registration ClinicalTrials.govNCT04174456. Registered on 18 November 2019

A comparison was made of two eddy dissipation rate (EDR) estimates based on flight data recorded by commercial flights. The EDR estimates from real-time data using the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) Algorithm were compared with the EDR estimates derived using the Netherlands Aerospace Centre (NLR) Algorithm using quick assess recorder (QAR) data. The estimates were found to be in good agreement in general, although subtle differences were found. The agreement between the two algorithms was better when the flight was above 10,000 ft. The EDR estimates from the two algorithms were also compared with the vertical acceleration experienced by the aircraft. Both EDR estimates showed good correlation with the vertical acceleration and would effectively capture the turbulence subjectively experienced by pilots.

Background: Identifying effective biomarkers plays a critical role on screening; rapid diagnosis; proper managements and therapeutic options, which is helpful in preventing serious complications. The present study aimed to compare the liver laboratory tests between alive and dead hospitalized cases for prediction and proper management of the patients. Methods: This retrospective, cross sectional study consists of all deceased patients admitted in one center in Shiraz, Iran during 19 Feb 2020 to 22 Aug 2021. For further comparison, we selected a 1:2 ratios alive group randomly. Results: Overall, 875 hospitalized cases died due to COVID-19. We selected 1750 alive group randomly. The median age was significantly higher in died group (65.96 vs 51.20). Regarding the laboratory findings during the hospitalization ALT, AST, Bili.D were significantly higher in non-survivors than survivors but Albumin was less in deceased patients. It was revealed elevated levels of Albumin, AST, Bili.T and Bili.D were associated with increasing the risk of in hospital death. Moreover, the predictive effect of ALP and Bili.D had significantly more than others with high sensitivity and specify. Conclusion: We found patients with COVID-19 have reduced serum albumin level, and increase ALT and AST. The current results revealed abnormal liver chemistries is associated with poor outcome, which highlighted the importance of monitoring these patients more carefully and should be given more caution.

This research work was designed to extract essential oil from sweet lime peel (solid waste). The feed material selected for study is sweet lime peel. The disposal of waste product such as peels often has a legal restriction problem and treatment process involved requires higher costs. Transformation of this waste in to useful products could cut global treatment costs. Hence the objective of our experimental work was to convert sweet lime peel in to essential oil which is in huge demand in food, pharma and cosmetic industry. In our experimental work eextraction of essential oil was evaluated and comparison study was made between steam distillation, hydro-distillation, solvent extraction and hydro-steam distillation. Maximum extraction yield of 2.4 % was achieved at 90 min of contact by hydro-distillation. Hydro-distillation method offers advantages in comparison with other three methods in terms of energy saving, cleanliness and reduced waste water. Chemical constituents of essential oil samples were evaluated in terms of qualitative and quantitative analyses by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry and physical techniques. The chemical profile includes thirty two components which were identified in the extracts by Gas chromatography-Mass spectroscopy (GC-MS) analysis. The dominant component identified was limonene (65 .2 to 72.8%).
