One of the problems that students of Maltese archaeology have to face is the meaning of the numerous cart-tracks furrowing most of the barren rock-surfaces. These tracks are scarce on Gozo and non-existent on the islands of Comino and Filfola.They consist of pairs of parallel grooves running for long distances on the hard coralline limestone patches, now straight and now curved as if avoiding an obstacle or having to change their direction. The grooves are mostly v-shaped, usually from 10 to 20 inches wide (25–50 cms) on the surface, and about 4 inches (10 cms) at the bottom. Between the two grooves, measured at the middle part, the distance is nearly always 4 feet 6 inches (1.37m). Naturally the depth of the grooves varies with the lie of the ground; if there is a strong tilt sideways, one of the grooves is shallow whilst the other is very deep.

The detail taxonomy analysis was performed to classify Acropora corals in Ujunggenteng Area. The research area was selected because the continuously exposed Quaternary coralline limestones, indicated the high variation and wide distribution of coral fossils. Moreover, the facies changes and contacts with shoreface sediments were clearly observed in this area. Detail taxonomy based on morphological description can classify Acropora corals in Ujunggenteng area into four species: Acropora cervicornis, Acropora palifera, Acropora gemmifera, and Acropora humilis. The study of coral paleontology and the application of the presence of corals as a standard facies belt were still rarely performed in Indonesia. Previous studies classified the coralline limestone into one standard facies belt, which was the organic build- up standard facies belt. Another approach was required to capture many conditions of coral fossil occurrences; not only in build-up condition but also in transported condition. Therefore, another purpose of this study is to modify the standard facies belt with a different approach using coral taphonomy and sediment association.Analisis taksonomi secara detil dilakukan untuk mengklasifikasikan koral Acropora di daerah Ujunggenteng. Daerah penelitian dipilih karena tersingkapnya batugamping terumbu berumur Kuarter yang menerus, yang menunjukkan tingginya jumlah spesies dan distribusi fosil koral yang luas. Selain itu, perubahan fasies dan kontak dengan batupasir pantai dapat jelas diamati pada daerah ini. Taksonomi detil berdasarkan deskripsi morfologi dapat mengelompokkan koral Acropora di daerah Ujunggenteng menjadi empat spesies: Acropora cervicornis, Acropora palifera, Acropora gemmifera, dan Acropora humilis. Selain itu, studi mengenai paleontologi dan penggunaan kehadiran koral sebagai dasar pembagian sabuk standar fasies batugamping masih jarang dilakukan di Indonesia. Studi sebelumnya mengelompokkan batugamping terumbu menjadi satu sabuk standar fasies, yaitu organic build up. Pendekatan yang lain diperlukan untuk menjelaskan kondisi koral lainnya pada batugamping, tidak hanya dalam kondisi tumbuh, tetapi juga dalam kondisi tertransportasi. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memodifikasi sabuk standar fasies dengan pendekatan berbeda menggunakan tafonomi koral dan asosiasi sedimen.

While engaged in the examination of the superficial deposits of the Maltese Islands, I have often met with rounded pebbles and angular fragments of a black, crystalline limestone, either lying on the rock surfaces, or embedded in the Quaternary formations.The late Professor Leith Adams drew attention to the same fact as long ago as 1867, and in a paper which was published in the Quart. Journ. Geol. Soc. he expressed an opinion that the fragments which he had seen lying on the surfaces of the sides and summits of the Gozitan Hills, belonged to a formation that was of a much later age than any of the rocks that are now to be found in situ in the islands.Dr. John Murray, too, notes in his brochure on the Maltese Islands the occurrence of similar fragments in the neighbourhood of Marsa Scirocco, and he further adds that no evidences of the rock having been found in situ in the islands had hitherto been recorded. The remarks of these gentlemen led me to consider the matter attentively, and I have, during the last year, been carrying on investigations with the object of discovering the origin of the black marble, the result of which has been to show that it is but a variety of the Lower Coralline Limestone, the basement bed of the Maltese series, and that it occurs extensively in situ in that formation.

Bottom photographs and drilled rock cores collected on several mountain tops along the crest of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge near 45°N describe the sediment distribution, sediment dynamics and shallow stratigraphy of these sites. Lag pebble deposits and pebble waves indicate rapid changes in bottom current direction and velocities that may approach 100 cm/s (>2 knots) one meter above the bottom so that surface sediments are often not indicative of sediment and rock types sampled using shallow drilling techniques. Absolute dates (14C) of coralline limestone, which underlies coarse unconsolidated sediment at most drilling sites, suggest deposition and initial lithification of these deposits during a middle Wisconsin interstadial period.
