Abstract We investigate the abelian sandpile group on modified wheels {\hat{W}}_{n} by using a variant of the dollar game as described in [N. L. Biggs, Chip-Firing and the critical group of a graph, J. Algebr. Comb. 9 (1999), 25–45]. The complete structure of the sandpile group on a class of graphs is given in this paper. In particular, it is shown that the sandpile group on {\hat{W}}_{n} is a direct product of two cyclic subgroups generated by some special configurations. More precisely, the sandpile group on {\hat{W}}_{n} is the direct product of two cyclic subgroups of order {a}_{n} and 3{a}_{n} for n even and of order {a}_{n} and 2{a}_{n} for n odd, respectively.

Abstract[Ni(C2H5N4O2)2] · HCl · H2O, C4H10N8NiO4 · HCl · H2O, forms triclinic crystals, Mr = 347.36, P1̄, a = 7.219(2), b = 7.316(1), c = 11.797(3) Å, α = 73.89(2), β = 86.37(2), γ = 85.71(2)°, V = 596 Å3 , Z = 2, dc = 1.93 Mgm-3 ; final Rw = 0.028 for 1957 reflections. The planar complex molecules form equidistant stacks along b, with the molecular planes inclined at ~29° to the stacking axis. Molecules of adjacent stacks are linked along a by an intermolecular H bridge coexistins with the usual intramolecular H bridges. The analogous Pt complex, C4H10N8O4Pt · HCl · H2O, Mr = 483.74, a = 6.480(4), b = 16.115(5), c = 12.194(9) Å, β = 101.27(4)°, V = 1249 Å3 , Z = 4, dc = 2.57 Mgm-3 , P21/a, crystallizes in a columnar structure with a Pt-Pt separation of ~a/2 ≈ 3.24 Å. Due to twinning, faking orthorhombic symmetry, a complete structure determination was not possible.

A method is presented for evaluation of the motion of long structures composed of interconnected barges, or modules, of arbitrary shape. Such structures are being proposed in the construction of offshore airports or other large offshore floating structures. It is known that the evaluation of the motion of jointed or otherwise interconnected modules which make up a long floating structure may be evaluated by three dimensional radiation/diffraction analysis. However, the computing effort increases rapidly as the complexity of the geometric shape of the individual modules and the total number of modules increases. This paper describes an approximate method which drastically reduces the computational effort without major effects on accuracy. The method relies on accounting for hydrodynamic interaction effects between only adjacent modules within the structure rather than between all of the modules since the near-field interaction is by far the more important. This approximation reduces the computational effort to that of solving the two-module problem regardless of the total number of modules in the complete structure.

This work focuses on capillary-induced collapse of high-aspect-ratio silicon nanopillars. Modification of the surface chemistry is demonstrated to be an efficient approach for reducing capillary forces and consequently reduce pattern collapse. Special effort is spent on determination of the wetting state of chemically modified surfaces as complete structure wetting is of utmost importance in wet processing. In light of this, an ATR-FTIR based method has been developed to unambiguously distinguish between wetting and non-wetting states.
