An affordable sonar assistive device was developed to facilitate the visually impaired people to walk inside or outside their homes. The device uses a sonar technology where each ultrasonic sensor consists of a transmitter and a receiver. The transmitter will transmit a signal to an obstacle in front of it and when the signal reaches an obstacle, the signal is reflected back. The reflected signal is then received by the receiver. The system of Arduino Pro Mini will then evaluate the echo to identify the presence t of the obstacles. This ultrasonic sensor can detect obstacles as far as 4 meters. Hands-on testing was conducted to identify visually impaired people needs and to provide them an opportunity to use the device. The users were interviewed to find out about their experience. The results clearly show that 90% of the users were satisfied with the features of the device and they were also confident of using the device to detect different types of obstacles.

Assistive devices for visually impaired people (VIP) which support daily traveling and improve social inclusion are developing fast. Most of them try to solve the problem of navigation or obstacle avoidance, and other works focus on helping VIP to recognize their surrounding objects. However, very few of them couple both capabilities (i.e., navigation and recognition). Aiming at the above needs, this paper presents a wearable assistive device that allows VIP to (i) navigate safely and quickly in unfamiliar environment, and (ii) to recognize the objects in both indoor and outdoor environments. The device consists of a consumer Red, Green, Blue and Depth (RGB-D) camera and an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU), which are mounted on a pair of eyeglasses, and a smartphone. The device leverages the ground height continuity among adjacent image frames to segment the ground accurately and rapidly, and then search the moving direction according to the ground. A lightweight Convolutional Neural Network (CNN)-based object recognition system is developed and deployed on the smartphone to increase the perception ability of VIP and promote the navigation system. It can provide the semantic information of surroundings, such as the categories, locations, and orientations of objects. Human–machine interaction is performed through audio module (a beeping sound for obstacle alert, speech recognition for understanding the user commands, and speech synthesis for expressing semantic information of surroundings). We evaluated the performance of the proposed system through many experiments conducted in both indoor and outdoor scenarios, demonstrating the efficiency and safety of the proposed assistive system.

he paper is aimed at the design of a mobility assistive device to help the visually impaired. The traditional use of a walking stick proposes its own drawbacks and limitations. Our research is motivated by the inability of the visually impaired people to ambulate and we have made an attempt to restore their independence and reduce the trouble of carrying a stick around. We offer a hands-free wearable glass which finds it utility in real-time navigation. The design of the smart glasses includes the integration of various sensors with raspberry pi. The paper presents a detailed account of the various components and the structural design of the glasses. The novelty of our work lies in providing a complete pipeline for analysis of surroundings in real-time and hence a better solution for navigating during the day to day activities using audio instructions as output.

Nowadays, blind or impaired people are facing a lot of problems in their daily life since it is not easy for them to move, which is very dangerous. There are about 37 million visually impaired people across the globe according to the World Health Organization. People with these problems mostly depend on others, for example, a friend, or their trained dog while movıng outside. Thus, we were motivated to develop a smart stick to solve this problem. The smart stick, integrated with an ultrasonic sensor, buzzer and vibrator, can detect obstacles in the path of the blind people. The buzzer and vibration motor are activated when any obstacle is detected to alert the blind person. This work proposes a low-cost ultrasonic smart blind stick for blind people so that they can move from one place to another in an easy, safe and independent manner. The system was designed and programmed using C language. Keywords: Arduino Uno, Arduino IDE, ultrasonic sensor, buzzer, motor.

<p>People are still using paper money for daily transaction; this, however, will expose some difficulty for visually impaired people. Though they can still read the nominal value of the paper money by the other people or feel the tactile feature, they cannot depend upon others all the time and the tactile feature does not work well if the paper money is worn out. Some alternatives have been proposed and conducted. One of them is using money value recognition application. The application will recognize nominal value of paper money comparing the image of the paper with database. This process is using a feature extraction algorithm called ORB feature descriptor. It has been used for six (6) different types of currencies that are 5 most traded currencies and Indonesia currency and also for different types of nominals (bills).</p>
