This study is concerned with vortex-induced vibration (VIV) of deepwater marine risers. Riser response measurements from model tests on a densely instrumented long, flexible riser in uniform and sheared currents offer an almost ideal setup for our work. Our objectives are two-fold: (i) we use the measured data to describe complexities inherent in riser motions accompanying VIV; and (ii) we discuss how such data sets (and even less spatially dense monitoring) can be used effectively in predicting fatigue damage rates, which are of critical interest for deepwater risers.

This paper presents experimental results on the non-linear vibration response of a rotating assembly comprising a rotor, flexible bearing housing and oil film damper. For the latter, due consideration is given to the effects of oil-supply pressure, film-rupture pressure and end sealing. The results are compared with predictions based on the Harmonic Balance principle described in a complementary paper (1).

The influences of Re (Reynolds number) on the response of vortex induced vibration (VIV) have been studied by previous researches, which indicate the influences should not be ignored. However, due to the limitation of experimental facilities and complexity of the cases, the explicit influence of Re on VIV is still not fully known. Meanwhile, the industry standards also do not supply design reference taking account of Re effects quantitatively. In present work, an innovative dimensionless parameter (denoted as “inertia-viscosity”) is proposed to displace the Re in the dimensionless system, in order to clarify the individual effect of Re. With this method, comparing tests are concisely carried out, and the effectiveness and feasibility are demonstrated. Through the comparing of tests, several remarkable results are obtained.
