Experimental Study of Natural Gas Combustion Flue Gas Waste Heat Recovery System Based on Direct Contact Heat Transfer and Absorption Heat Pump

Condensing boiler for flue gas waste heat recovery is widely used in industries. In order to gain a portion of the sensible heat and latent heat of the vapor in the flue gas, the flue gas is cooled by return water of district heating through a condensation heat exchanger which is located at the end of flue. At low ambient air temperature, some boilers utilize the air pre-heater, which makes air be heated before entering the boiler, and also recovers part of the waste heat of flue gas. However, there are some disadvantages for these technologies. For the former one, the low temperature of the return water is required while the utilization of flue gas heat for the latter one is very limited. A new flue gas condensing heat recovery system is developed, in which direct contact heat exchanger and absorption heat pump are integrated with the gas boiler to recover condensing heat, even the temperature of the return water is so low that the latent heat of vapor in the flue gas could not be recovered directly by the general condensing technologies. Direct contact condensation occurs when vapor in the flue gas contacts and condenses on cold liquid directly. Due to the absence of a solid boundary between the phases, transport processes at the phase interface are much more efficient and quite different from condensation phenomena on a solid surface. Additionally, the surface heat exchanger tends to be more bulky and expensive. In this study, an experimental platform of the new system is built, and a variety of experimental conditions are carried out. Through the analysis of the experimental data and operational state, the total thermal efficiency of the platform will be increased 3.9%, and the system is reliable enough to be popularized.

Drain water at 35°C was directly discharged into sewer in most of barbershop with Electric water heater. Heat utilization efficiency is lower, and energy grade match between input and output is not appropriate in most of barbershops. Two waste heat recovery systems were presented according to the heat utilization characteristics of barbershops and principle of cascade utilization of energy. One was the waste heat recovery system by water-to-water heat exchanger (WHR-HE), and the other is the waste heat recovery system by water-to-water heat exchanger and high-temperature heat pump (WHR-CHEHP). The two heat recovery systems were analyzed by the first and second Laws of thermodynamic. The analyzed results show that the energy consumption can be reduced about 75% for HR-HE, and about 98% for WHR-CHEHP. Both WHR-HE and WHR-CHEHP are with better energy-saving effect and economic benefits.

As a good energy resource, Mine exhaust air has an important value of recycling. In this paper, the heat and mass exchange mechanism and potential of the mine exhaust air heat exchanger (MEAHE) is mainly researched. The heat exchanger efficiency is affected by water and air temperature and flow in terms of double efficiency method. The result can provide the basis for the further determine the thermal calculation method for MEAHE, and lays the foundation for the mine comprehensive utilization of waste heat recovery system design.

Flue gas recycling system is an effective way of saving energy and improving efficiency for coal-fired power plant. In this paper, the general low-temperature economizer, heat pipe type low temperature economizer, composite phase change heat recovery system are introduced. Combined with a 600MW unit parameters, the economies of various waste heat recovery system are compared.

The waste heat recovered by traditional industrial waste heat recovery systems is mostly high-temperature flue gas and combustible gas, while the waste heat of medium and low temperature flue gas that accounts for more than 50% of the total waste heat resources has been ignored, which is not conducive to the effective energy saving of industrial production and manufacturing process. In the meantime, few studies have concerned about the changes in the economy of circulating industrial waste heat recovery system. Therefore, to fill in this research gap, this paper aimed at the economy problem of circulating medium and low temperature industrial waste heat recovery system and carried out a series of research. The paper completed the thermodynamic analysis of different medium and low temperature waste heat recovery modes of industrial flue gas, and gave the analysis steps of the economy of circulating medium and low temperature waste heat recovery system of industrial flue gas. The effectiveness and accuracy of the thermodynamic and thermo-economic models constructed in the paper were proved by experimental results.

A 1 MW fuel cell power plant began operation at California State University, Northridge (CSUN) in January, 2007. The power plant was installed on campus to complement a Satellite Chiller Plant which is being constructed in response to increased cooling demands related to campus growth. The power plant consists of four 250 kW fuel cell units, and a waste heat recovery system which produces hot water for the campus. The waste heat recovery system was designed by CSUN’s Physical Plant Management personnel, in consultation with engineering faculty and students, to accommodate the operating conditions required by the fuel cell units as well as the thermal needs of the campus. A unique plenum system, known as a Barometric Thermal Trap, was created to mix the four fuel cell exhaust streams prior to flowing through a two stage heat exchanger unit. The two stage heat exchanger uses separate coils for recovering sensible and latent heat in the exhaust stream. The sensible heat is being used to partially supply the campus’ building hot water and space heating requirements. The latent heat is intended for use by an adjacent recreational facility at the University Student Union. This paper discusses plant performance data which was collected and analyzed over a several month period during 2008. Electrical efficiencies and Combined Heat and Power (CHP) efficiencies are presented. The data shows that CHP efficiencies have been consistently over 60%, with the potential to exceed 70% when planned improvements to the plant are completed.
