Study on Flow Boiling Heat Transfer of Carbon Dioxide With PAG-Type Lubricating Oil in Pre-Dryout Region Inside Horizontal Tube

In this study, the boiling heat transfer coefficients of carbon dioxide with a PAG-type lubricating oil entrained from 0 to 5 wt% in a horizontally placed smooth tube with an inner diameter of 2 mm were experimentally investigated under the following operating conditions: mass fluxes from 170 to 320 kg/m2s, heat fluxes from 4.5 to 36 kW/m2, and a saturation temperature of 15 °C. The results show that for a low oil concentration of approximately 0.5% to 1%, no further deterioration of the heat transfer coefficient was observed at higher oil concentrations in spite of a significant decrement of the heat transfer coefficient compared to that under an oil-free condition. The heat flux still had a positive influence on the heat transfer coefficient in low quality regions. However, no obvious influence was observed in high quality regions, which implies that nucleate boiling dominates in the low quality region whereas it is suppressed in the high quality regions. Unlike the mass flux under an oil-free condition, mass flux has a significant influence on the heat transfer coefficient, with a maximum increase of 50% in the heat transfer. On the basis of our experimental measurements of the flow boiling heat transfer of carbon dioxide under wide experimental conditions, a flow boiling heat transfer model for horizontal tubes has been proposed for a mixture of CO2 and polyalkylene glycol (PAG oil) in the pre-dryout region, with consideration of the thermodynamic properties of the mixture. The surface tension and viscosity of the mixture were particularly taken into account. New factors were introduced into the correlation to reflect the suppressive effects of the mass flux and the oil on both the nucleate boiling. It is shown that the calculated results can depict the influence of the mass flux and the heat flux on both nucleate boiling and convection boiling.

In this paper the experimental flow boiling heat transfer results of a minichannel are presented. A series of experiments was conducted to measure the heat transfer coefficients in a minichannel made of stainless steel (AISI 316) having an internal diameter of 1.7mm and a uniformly heated length of 220mm. R134a was used as working fluid and experiments were performed at two different system pressures corresponding to saturation temperatures of 27 °C and 32 °C. Mass flux was varied from 50 kg/m2 s to 600 kg/m2 s and heat flux ranged from 2kW/m2 to 156kW/m2. The test section was heated directly using a DC power supply. The direct heating of the channel ensured uniform heating and heating was continued until dry out was reached. The experimental results show that the heat transfer coefficient increases with imposed wall heat flux while mass flux and vapour quality have no considerable effect. Increasing the system pressure slightly enhances the heat transfer coefficient. The heat transfer coefficient is reduced as dryout is reached. It is observed that dryout phenomenon is accompanied with fluctuations and a larger standard deviation in outer wall temperatures.

Experiments of flow boiling heat transfer coefficient of FC-72 were carried out over simulated silicon chip of 10×10×0.5 mm3 for electronic cooling. Four kinds of micro-pin-fins with the dimensions of 30×60, 30×120, 50×60, 50×120 μm2 (thickness, t × height, h) respectively, were fabricated on the chip surfaces by the dry etching technique to enhance boiling heat transfer. A smooth chip was also tested for comparison. The experiments were conducted at three different fluid velocities (0.5, 1 and 2m/s) and three different liquid subcoolings (15, 25 and 35K). All micro-pin-finned surfaces show a considerable heat transfer enhancement compared to the smooth surface. Both the forced convection and nucleate boiling heat transfer contribute to the total heat transfer performance. The contribution of each factor to the total heat transfer has been clearly presented in the flow boiling heat transfer coefficient curves. In a lower heat flux region, the heat transfer coefficient increases greatly with increasing fluid velocity, but increases slightly with increasing heat flux, indicating that the single-phase forced convection dominates the heat transfer process. With further increasing heat flux to the onset of nucleate boiling, the heat transfer coefficient increases remarkably. For a given liquid subcooling, the curves of flow boiling heat transfer coefficient at fluid velocities of 0.5 and 1 m/s almost follow one line for each surface, showing insensitivity of nucleate boiling heat transfer to fluid velocity. However, at the largest fluid velocity of 2 m/s, the slope of the flow boiling heat transfer coefficient curves for micro-pin-finned surfaces becomes smaller, indicating that the forced convection also plays an important role besides the nucleate boiling heat transfer. The curves of the flow boiling heat transfer coefficient can be used to determine the boiling incipience at different fluid velocities, which provides a basis for the suitable fluid velocity selection in designing highly efficient cooling scheme for electronic devices.

The flow boiling heat transfer coefficient of R-22 in small hydraulic diameter tubes has been experimentally studied. Both brass and aluminum round tubes of 1.66 mm inside diameter are used for the test section. The ranges of the major experimental parameters are 300∼600 kg/m2s of refrigerant mass flux, 10∼20 kW/m2 of the wall heat flux, 0.0∼0.9 of the inlet vapor quality. The experimental result showed that the flow boiling heat transfer coefficient in this small tubes are in the range of 2∼4 kW/m2K and it varies only by heat flux, independent of mass flux and vapor quality. It is also observed that the heat transfer coefficients in the aluminum tube are up to 50% higher than in the brass tube.

The paper discusses the results of the flow boiling heat transfer in a vertical minichannel with rectangular cross-section. The heating element for FC-72 flowing in the minichannel is a thin plate. Infrared thermography is used to determine changes in the temperature on its outer side. The aim of thecalculation is to determine the heat transfer coefficient using 1D and 2D calculation models. Local values of heat transfer coefficient on the surface between the heated plate and boiling fluid are calculated from the Newton`s and Fourier`s laws. In 2D model the plate temperature distribution is obtained by solving the inverse heat conduction problem. The governing equation is solved by means of two methods: the non-continuous Trefftz method and the Beck method. The results are presented as plate temperature and heat transfer coefficient calculated using 1D and 2D models as a function of the distance fromthe minichannel inlet. The analysis of the results revealed that the values and distributions of the heat transfer coefficient calculated by means of both models were similar. This suggests that all mentioned methods are interchangeable.

The present study investigates the effect of cross-links on flow boiling heat transfer characteristics in rectangular microchannel heat sinks, using FC-72 as the working fluid. The silicon test section consists of 45 cross-linked microchannels, measuring 16 mm in length, with a hydraulic diameter of 248 μm. The parameters investigated include mass flux, heat flux, and exit quality, ranging from 99–275 kg/m2s, 7.2–88.8 kW/m2, and 0.01–0.71, respectively. Thermochromatic liquid crystals have been used in the present study as full-field surface temperature sensors to map the temperature distribution on the heat sink surface. The flow boiling heat transfer coefficient shows a different trend in the cross-linked design relative to the straight microchannel design. The flow boiling heat transfer coefficient increases with increasing exit quality at a constant mass flux, which is caused by the domination of the nucleation boiling mechanism in the cross-link region. The predictions obtained from the existing heat transfer correlations found in the literature significantly under-estimate the present heat transfer measurements, except for the Yu et al. (2002) correlation.

The present study studied the flow boiling heat transfer performance of a mini channel with offset fins experimentally. The hydraulic diameter for it is 1.59 mm with 9 offset rectangular channels. The influences of saturation pressure, mass flux and heat flux on heat transfer coefficient were investigated. The experimental results reveal that when the vapor quality of refrigerant is less than 0.6, the mass flux has negligible influence on heat transfer coefficient. While it increases with both the saturation pressure and heat flux. Differently, in the high quality region, the heat transfer coefficient has an ascending trend with the increase of mass flux and is not affected by heat flux and saturation pressure.

In this study, boiling heat transfer coefficients of carbon dioxide in horizontally located smooth tubes were experimentally investigated. The inner diameter of heat transfer tubes was 1, 2, 4, and 6 mm. Experiments were conducted at evaporating temperature of 5 and 15 °C, heat fluxes from 4.5 to 36 kW/m2, and mass fluxes from 360 to 1440 kg/m2s. The heat transfer coefficients in the pre-dryout region and post-dryout region were investigated, as well as the dryout quality. Due to the small viscosity and surface tension of CO2, the dryout occurs at a small quality from 0.4 to 0.7. The inception quality decreases with the increase of mass flux, and is affected by the heat flux and tube diameter; the effects of heat flux on the heat transfer coefficient are much significant in the pre-dryout region, which is related with the activation of nucleate boiling. On the contrary, the effects of mass flux are relatively low due to the low two-phase density ratio near the critical point. In addition, this tendency becomes more significant when the small tube is tested; In the post-dryout region, mass velocity is the dominating factor on heat transfer coefficient. At small mass flux, the heat transfer coefficient decreases with the increase of quality, while at large mass flux such as 1440kg/m2s, the heat transfer coefficient turns to increasing with the quality. By increasing the evaporating temperature, the pre-dryout heat transfer coefficient increases, while the dryout inception quality and post-dryout heat transfer coefficient are not affected greatly by the evaporating temperature.

An analytical model is proposed to predict the flow boiling heat transfer coefficient in the annular flow regime in mini- and microchannel heat sinks based on the separated model. The modeling procedure includes a formulation for determining the heat transfer coefficient based on the wall shear stress and the local thermophysical characteristics of the fluid based on the Reynolds’ analogy. The frictional and acceleration pressure gradients within the channel are incorporated into the present model to provide a better representation of the flow conditions. The model is validated against collected data sets from the literature produced by different authors under different experimental conditions, different fluids, and with mini- and microchannels of hydraulic diameters falling within the range of 92–1440 μm. The accuracy between the experimental and predicted results is achieved with a mean absolute error of 10%. The present analytical model can correctly predict the different trends of the heat transfer coefficient reported in the literature as a function of the exit quality. The predicted two-phase heat transfer coefficient is found to be very sensitive to changes in mass flux and saturation temperature. However, it is found to be mildly sensitive to the change in heat flux.

This paper reports an impact of selected thermal and flow parameters i.e., mass flux and inlet pressure on flow boiling heat transfer in a minichannel. Research was carried out on the experimental set up with the test section fitted with a single, rectangular and vertically oriented minichannel 1.7 mm deep. Infrared thermography was used to determine changes in the temperature on the outer side of the heated minichannel wall in the central part of the minichannel. The heated element for HFE-649 flowing in the minichannel was a thin alloy plate, made of Haynes-230. Local values of heat transfer coefficient for stationary state conditions were calculated using a simple one-dimensional method. Analysis of the results was based on experimental series obtained for the same heat flux, various mass fluxes and average inlet pressures. The experimental results are presented as the relationship between the heat transfer coefficient and the distance along the minichannel length and boiling curves. The highest local heat transfer coefficients were obtained for the lower average inlet pressure and for the highest mass flux at lower heat flux.
