Usually for the production of swellable starch extrusion treatment or drying on a drum roller dryer are used. The properties of swellable starch with a newly formed structure are evaluated mainly by the water absorption capacity in water under the action of temperature. The ability of swellable starch to thicken, stabilize, bind and enamel various food and non-food products depends on this indicator. The study of the index of water absorption capacity (WAC) of swellable starch obtained by our improved technology based on the use of convective dryer is an urgent and priority task. Research methodology. Control – extruded corn starch. Samples of swellable starch obtained by preparation of starch suspensions of different concentrations of 25, 30, 35 and 40 % were dried under conditions of two-stage convective drying, crushed and sieved. Research results. The obtained samples of swellable starch differ in the value of WAC. It is shown that the WAC of swellable starch affects not only the method of its production but also affects the concentration of starch suspension (SS) from which the samples of swellable starch were made. The obtained value of the approximation coefficient shows that the strongest bond (value - 1) has a sample of swellable starch obtained by convective drying from a concentration of SS 25 %. Conclusions. The WAC of extruded and swellable starch samples obtained by convective drying from different concentrations of SS from 25 to 40 % was investigated. It is shown that at a temperature of 20 °С the lowest value of WAC has swellable starch obtained from 25 % of the concentration of SS and the highest value in 35 % of the concentration of SS. Low strength of the newly formed structure is detected by samples at different temperatures, in particular, extruded starch and a sample obtained from SS 25 % at an aqueous solution temperature of 40-50 °C, a sample obtained from SS 30 % at 60 °C, a sample obtained from SS 35 % at temperature of 40 °C, the sample was obtained from SS 40 % at temperatures of 30 and 50 °C.

In this study, five novel flocculants, QTRY-02, DC-491, Fennofix K97, BWD-01 and MD-03 were chosen to treat Reactive Brilliant Blue KN-R simulated wastewater by jar tests. The effect of flocculant dosage, initial pH, solution temperature of simulated dye wastewater and sedimentaion time on the color removal was examined respectively. The maximum color removal efficiency of KN-R was over 82% after 20 minutes of sedimentation and the optimal dosage was 150mg/L for all flocculants. In the pH range from 3 to 11, small changes in the color removal efficiency for QTRY-02. While for BWD-01, the efficiency increased from 67.3% to 88.3%. For both QTRY-02 and MD-04, decolorization efficiency increased as the solution temperature increased from 10°C to 50°C and the same result appeared when prolonging the sedimentation time from 1 to 12 hours.

Starch gelatinization is an important process due to the prevalence of starch usage in industries such as cosmetics and food production. In this study, the gelatinization of waxy corn starch (WCS) was investigated with the goal of providing an option for the rapid determination of starch gelatinization characteristics. The procedure used in the study was solely based on differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), which is an established technique for the determination of thermal characteristics of starches. A sequence of experiments was conducted to determine the excess water condition, an estimate of the minimum gelatinization temperature, and gelatinization time. These parameters were found to be ≥65 wt.% water, 75–85 °C, and 10 min, respectively. The estimation of the minimum gelatinization temperature was determined from the thermal properties of the WCS as obtained by DSC. The obtained parameters resulted in complete WCS gelatinization, and, thus, the sequence of procedures used in the study could possibly be used for rapid waxy starch evaluation.

SummaryPharmacokinetics of intravenously injected 125I-labeled urokinase (125I-UK) of a molecular weight of 33,000 daltons in normal rabbits and patients with various diseases were investigated. The plasma clearance of 125I-UK in rabbits was described by a biexponential curve within six hours with a half-life of 8 minutes, 2.3 hours, respectively. The radioactivity in the liver and kidneys 15 minutes after iv injection with 125I-UK was 9.6% and 14.0% of the radioactivity injected, respectively. Approximately 80% of the total radioactive material injected was excreted in the urine in 18 hours. No increase in activator activity in the urine was observed after a large amount of UK injection. Activity uptake of 125I-UK by experimentally induced arterial thrombus was little. Lysis of the stasis thrombus was produced by injecting 7.5 × 104 IU of UK in only one out of 8 rabbits. In vitro contact experiment revealed that transfer of 125I-UK to plasma clot is slow (24 hours for 10% of 125I-UK by plasma clot). In 4 patients plasma clearance of 125I-UK was essentially similar to that in rabbits. From the results obtained optimal dosage regimen of UK administration for complete thrombolysis in vivo was discussed.

Trends toward closure of white water recirculation loops in papermaking often lead to a need for system modifications. We conducted a pilot-scale study using pulsed electrocoagulation technology to treat the effluent of an old corrugated containerboard (OCC)-based paper mill in order to evaluate its treatment performance. The operating variables were a current density of 0–240 A/m2, a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 8–16 min, and a coagulant (anionic polyacrylamide) dosage of 0–22 mg/L. Water quality indicators investigated were electrical con-ductivity, suspended solids (SS), chemical oxygen demand (COD), and true color. The results were encouraging. Under the operating conditions without coagulant addition, the highest removals for conductivity, SS, COD, and true color were 39.8%, 85.7%, 70.5%, and 97.1%, respectively (with an HRT of 16 min). The use of a coagulant enhanced the removal of both conductivity and COD. With an optimal dosage of 20 mg/L and a shortened HRT of 10 min, the highest removal achieved for the four water quality indicators were 37.7%, 88.7%, 74.2%, and 91.7%, respectively. The water qualities thus attained should be adequate to allow reuse of a substantial portion of the treated effluent as process water makeup in papermaking.
