In the field of vehicle lighting, due to the diode laser, its small size and high energy conversion efficiency, it can be effectively used as the headlight source of high beam. In recent years, it was adopted by European advanced car manufacturers as a new generation of automotive headlight lighting products. The current mature technology on the market is to extend the laser beam by means of reflection and to use a single high-power laser as the light source to meet the needs of surface lighting. In this research, we propose a new integrated optical design for an automotive headlight system with the rod lens, gradient-index lens (GRIN lens) and freeform lens to expand the laser beam. With regard to the diffusion of the beam by reflection and refraction, the liquid lens is used as a switch for the high beam and low beam lights to meet the needs of vehicle lighting functions and to use low-power diode lasers to synthesize the array light source. Compared with the 24-W LED headlight module available in the current market, the energy saved by this proposed optical design can increase efficiency by an average of 33%. The maximum illuminance is 56.6 lux in the high-beam mode, which is 18% higher than the standard value. Let the laser light meet the lighting requirements of regulatory standard values even beyond.

AbstractGradient index or rugate optical filters are continuous generalizations of the familiar quarterwave stack which find widespread applications in sensor hardening. In the design of a filter or mirror there are infinitely many refractive index profiles n(x) whose wavelength-dependent reflectance R(λ) is specified as a design objective. The relationship between R(λ) and n(x) is nearly that of a Fourier-transform pair. Exploiting this relationship, specifically the physically indeterminate phase of the Fourier transforms, permits constrained optimization of rugate designs. In this contribution we outline the approach of optimal phase modulation and indicate by examples its application to problems in optical limiting.

An integrated optical coherence tomography (OCT) and video rigid laryngoscope have been designed to acquire surface and subsurface tissue images of larynx simultaneously. The dual-modality system that is based on a common-path design with components as few as possible effectively maintains the light transmittance without compromising the imaging quality. In this paper, the field of view (FOV) of the system can reach [Formula: see text] by use of a gradient index (GRIN) lens as the relay element and a four-lens group as the distal objective, respectively. The simulation showed that the modulation transfer function (MTF) value in each FOV of the rigid video endoscope at 160[Formula: see text]lp/mm is greater than 0.1 while the root mean square (RMS) radii of the OCT beam in the center and edge of the FOV are 14.948[Formula: see text][Formula: see text]m and 73.609[Formula: see text][Formula: see text]m, respectively. The resolutions of both OCT and video endoscope meet the requirement of clinical application. In addition, all the components of the system are spherical, therefore the system can be of low cost and easy to assemble.
