Pflege als Dienstleistung hat eine lange Tradition, Pflegeforschung dagegen eine verhältnismäßig kurze Geschichte. Die erste Fachveröffentlichung stammt von Florence Nightingale aus dem Jahr 1858. Seit Nightingale hat sich das Bedürfnis, zu forschen und die Effektivität von Pflegediensten zu erhöhen, gesteigert. Mehr als zuvor benötigt die Gesellschaft auf wissenschaftlicher Evidenz basierende Pflege, die nicht nur auf Traditionen und Ritualen verharrt. Die Basis von wissenschaftlicher Erkenntnis kann durch Forschung erworben werden. Dabei ist es wichtig, innerhalb der multidisziplinären klinischen Forschung das besondere Interesse der Pflege klar im Mittelpunkt zu halten. Virginia Henderson (1955) und Dorothea Orem (1959) haben die eigentliche Aufgabe der Pflege klar festgesetzt. Das Design klinischer Pflegeforschung kann (quasi-)experimentell, korrelativ oder deskriptiv sein. Deskriptive Forschung kann qualitativ oder quantitativ sein. Experimentelle oder quasi-experimentelle Studien dienen der Erforschung von Auswirkungen von Pflegeunterstützung zur Verringerung von Selbstpflegenöten und Verbesserung der Selbstpflegekompetenz von Patienten. Einige Beispiele von klinischer Pflegeforschung werden gegeben. Das erste Beispiel zeigt, wie Pflegepersonalbesetzung und die Qualität der Pflege Auswirkungen auf die Selbstpflegefähigkeit bei der Hygiene haben. Das zweite Beispiel zeigt, wie Selbstpflege und Lebensqualität bei Krebspatienten unter Chemotherapie zusammenhängen. Das dritte Beispiel zeigt, welche Auswirkungen Diabetes-Aufklärung auf Selbstpflegeverhalten und Stoffwechselkontrolle hat. Die angeführten Beispiele und Argumentationen zeigen die Wichtigkeit klinischer Pflegeforschung mit klarem Pflegefokus. Dies bedeutet, Forschungsprogramme zu entwerfen, und setzt Kooperation mit Pflegediensten, Ärzten und Krankenhäusern voraus. Erkenntnisse sind im Interesse evidenter Patientenversorgung multidisziplinär zu diskutieren und zu nutzen.

Since Florence Nightingale, nurses have agreed that care should be individualized for each patient. Emergency care is no different and texts on this subject instruct the nurse to involve the client in his own care and to recognize that being an emergency victim is physically and psychologically difficult for the client. But just what is client-centered emergency care and are clients getting it?A client is brought to the emergency room, unconscious, with severe head trauma resulting from a motorcycle accident. In this instance client-centered care consists of the nurse reacting swiftly and probably unemotionally. It is not in the client's best interest at this time for the nurse to try to ascertain that person's values and life views. Here client-centered care is compatible with the values and views of both the nurse and the institution.

Aim To examine past Florence Nightingale Medal recipients’ parallels with the evolving nature of the nursing field as a whole. Design Descriptive research. Method The professional and demographic characteristics of 1,449 Florence Nightingale Medal recipients between 1920 and 2015 were analyzed to develop a high-level overview of the award recipient characteristics. Result Medal recipients were primarily female (98.07%), with 36% being Specialist nurses. Awards were mainly conferred for aid work (30.4%) in the context of war or armed conflict followed by Nursing education (17.2%) and disaster aid (14.9%). The majority of recipients were affiliated with the Red Cross and the majority of recipients were those conducting Red Cross duties. Conclusion Our results offer statistical validation for the dedication of these exceptional individuals, while also highlighting overall parallels with the ongoing development of the nursing field as it expands to better deliver culturally-sensitive care and to overcome outdated stereotypes that would otherwise constrain innovation.

Die WHO hat 2020 – das Jahr des 200. Geburtstags von Florence Nightingale – zum internationalen Jahr der professionell Pflegenden und Hebammen erklärt. Der Deutsche Berufsverband für Pflegeberufe forderte bereits im Frühjahr 2020 „grundsätzliche und umfassende Reformen“ und erläuterte: „… die (Corona-)Krise hat auf dramatische Weise Werte und Prioritäten verändert, die Schwachstellen im deutschen Gesundheitswesen offengelegt …“– und gleichzeitig klargestellt, welch immense Bedeutung die Pflegeberufe in diesem System tatsächlich haben 1.
