ABSTRACT In the present era of conjugate vaccines against Haemophilus influenzae type b, non-vaccine-preventable strains are of concern. Here, we report the first whole-genome sequence of an invasive H. influenzae type e strain. This genomic information will enable further investigations on encapsulated non-type b H. influenzae strains.

OBJECTIVE: To review the epidemiology of Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) disease, the first Hib vaccine and its limitations, the characteristics and clinical efficacy of the newer conjugate vaccines, and the current recommendations for administration of Hib vaccines. DATA SOURCES: Pertinent literature was identified via a MEDLINE search. Additionally, references cited in published articles were used as data sources. STUDY SELECTION: Studies describing the epidemiology of Hib disease and the efficacy and/or immunogenicity of the Hib vaccines are reviewed. DATA SYNTHESIS: Serious invasive disease secondary to Hib infection causes significant morbidity and mortality in children between the ages of three months and five years. The original Hib vaccine was found to be ineffective in stimulating an adequate immune response in children younger than two years of age. The new Hib conjugate vaccines provide superior efficacy and immunogenicity compared with the original unconjugated vaccine. They stimulate an immune response that is distinctly different from that elicited by the original vaccine. Two vaccine products are currently licensed for use in children as young as two months of age, thus conferring immunity to those children at highest risk for Hib disease. CONCLUSIONS: The new Hib conjugate vaccines provide excellent efficacy and, when used as recommended, may significantly reduce the incidence of invasive Hib disease and its sequelae.

Some mucoromycotan fungi establish symbiotic associations with endohyphal bacteria. Here, the genome of Entomortierella parvispora E1425 (synonymously known as Mortierella parvispora E1425), which harbors a cultured Burkholderiaceae -related endobacterium (BRE) designated Mycoavidus sp. Strain B2-EB, was sequenced. We provide genomic information to elucidate fungal-BRE symbiotic features.

ABSTRACT The introduction of routine infant immunization with Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) conjugate vaccines in the United Kingdom in 1992 led to a significant reduction in invasive disease due to this organism. Subsequently, between 1999 and 2003 there was an increase in the number of immunized children with Hib infection. We investigated whether the rise in cases was related to changes in anti-polyribosylribitol phosphate (PRP) antibody concentration or avidity. Using stored sera, we analyzed temporal changes in antibody levels among 3- to 5-year-old children immunized between 1991 and 2000. Anti-PRP antibody concentrations were higher in 3- to 5-year-olds who received infant immunization in 1991 than those in subsequent years. This difference may be related to changes in either the mode of administration of Hib conjugate vaccines or the rates of Hib nasopharyngeal carriage. This study emphasizes the factors affecting anti-PRP antibody concentration following immunization with conjugate vaccines and the importance of these in long-term protection from invasive disease.

The objective of this study was to investigate the epidemiology of invasive disease due to Haemophilus influenzae type b in childhood in Glasgow. A retrospective study has been made on the hospital records of 252 children aged 0 to 12 years admitted to Glasgow hospitals during 1981–1990. The annual incidence of invasive Haemophilus influenzae type b disease in Glasgow was estimated at 39 per 100,000 children less than five years of age per year. The figure for Haemophilus meningitis was 23.8 per 100,000 children less than five years of age per year. Ninety-five per cent of all cases occurred in children less than five years of age and 72.1% of meningitis cases occurred before two years of age. There was a mortality of 2.77%. Long-term neurological sequelae were found in 15.3% of the survivors. The annual incidence of Haemophilus influenzae type b disease is slightly higher in Glasgow than previously reported for the United Kingdom. The study provides baseline data to help assess efficacy of proposed early childhood vaccination.

We have identified the whole-genome sequence of Lactobacillus salivarius DJ-sa-01, a potential probiotic strain for poultry, isolated from a chicken small intestine. We used the PacBio and Illumina platforms to obtain the sequence of the entire single circular chromosome.
