ABSTRACTThe fabrication of one-dimensional magnetophotonic crystals (MPC) composed from Bi-substituted yttrium-iron-garnet films separated by the silicon oxide layers is presented. The enhancement of the Faraday rotation angle is observed at the spectral regions of the photonic band gap edges. The effective Faraday rotation achieves the values up to 1.5 degrees per micron at 1100-nm-wavelength.

<p>We study how hot plasma that is released during a solar flare can be confined in its source and interact with surrounding colder plasma. The X-ray emission of coronal flare sources is well explained using Kappa velocity distribution. Therefore, we compare the difference in the confinement of plasma with Kappa and Maxwellian distribution. We use a 3D Particle-in-Cell code, which is large along magnetic field lines, effectively one-dimensional, but contains all electromagnetic effects. In the case with Kappa distribution, contrary to Maxwellian distribution, we found formation of several thermal fronts associated with double-layers that suppress particle fluxes. As the Kappa distribution of electrons forms an extended tail, more electrons are not confined by the first front and cause formation of multiple fronts. A beam of electrons from the hot part is formed at each front; it generates return current, Langmuir wave density depressions, and a double layer with a higher potential step than in the Maxwellian case. We compare the Kappa and Maxwellian cases and discuss how these processes could be observed.</p>

Four 2,2′-bisindolylmethanes (BIMs), a useful class of polyindolyl species joined to a central carbon, were synthesized using salicylaldehyde derivatives and simple acid catalysis; these are 2-[bis(3-methyl-1H-indol-2-yl)methyl]-6-methylphenol, (IIa), 2-[bis(3-methyl-1H-indol-2-yl)methyl]-4,6-dichlorophenol, (IIb), 2-[bis(3-methyl-1H-indol-2-yl)methyl]-4-nitrophenol, (IIc), and 2-[bis(3-methyl-1H-indol-2-yl)methyl]-4,6-di-tert-butylphenol, (IId). BIMs (IIa) and (IIb) were characterized crystallographically as the dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) disolvates, i.e. C26H24N2O·2C2H6OS and C25H20Cl2N2O·2C2H6OS, respectively. Both form strikingly similar one-dimensional hydrogen-bonding chain motifs with the DMSO solvent molecules. BIM (IIa) packs into double layers of chains whose orientations alternate every double layer, while (IIb) forms more simply packed chains along the a axis. BIM (IIa) has a remarkably long c axis.

The mmW band photonic Tamm states in 1D magnetophotonic crystals are studied. It is shown the possibility to manipulate the eigenfrequencies of such states by an external magnetic field. Our experimental results are in a good agreement with theoretical prediction.
