Pediatric Mechanical Circulatory Support has been utilized increasingly to support children awaiting heart transplantation. The Berlin Heart EXCOR® is currently the only viable option, other than veno-arterial ECMO, to provide short- to intermediate-term mechanical circulatory support to infants and children. The Berlin Heart EXCOR® was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 2011 as a durable bridge to transplantation following a prospective Investigative Device Exemption (IDE) trial. Since its introduction in Europe in 2001, the Berlin Heart EXCOR® has totaled over 2,400 implants at 176 centers in 41 countries with a 76% success rate.
