The decision to use immune serum globulin (ISG) for household contacts of symptomatic or asymptomatic carriers of hepatitis B virus should be dependent upon at least two factors: (1) the efficacy of the ISG preparation, and (2) the risk of acquiring disease following the exposure. Efficacy of ISG. It is clear that conclusions based on studies which were conducted in the 1950's and 1960's are no longer valid today. At that time, specific tests for the identification of hepatitis B infection were not available.
