The lake ecology of high-latitude fishes is strongly influenced by seasonal feeding opportunities and environmental stochasticity in Arctic environments. Arctic Charr (Salvelinus alpinus) populations are prevalent throughout the Arctic and show multiple life history strategies across their range. Unlike Old World populations the lake ecology of Arctic Charr populations on south Baffin Island remain poorly defined. We examined the comparative seasonal lake ecology of two differing Arctic Charr populations (anadromous and landlocked) in Cumberland Sound, Nunavut. Anadromous charr showed no evidence of feeding occurring within freshwater once they began seaward migrations. Anadromous charr achieve sexual maturation at a larger size and younger age than landlocked charr. Landlocked charr used more lake habitats than anadromous charr with feeding opportunities as an apparent influence on habitat selection. Landlocked charr fed year round. They adopted a cannibalistic feeding strategy in the winter but consumed a variety of prey items in the fall. Littoral habitat was found to be important to all sizes of charr in both seasons. Smaller anadromous charr (<350mm) did not use the benthic habitat. The variable ecology and form demonstrated further emphasizes the phenotypic adaptability of Arctic Charr that allows its widespread distribution in the Arctic.

Secondary sexual characters are assumed to be costly to develop, and the costs of parasite infections and immune suppression are currently an active area of research within sexual selection. We investigated differences in parasitic infections and immunological activity between reproductively active and inactive Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus). Spawning fish were found to have higher intensities of macroparasite infections than nonspawning or resting fish. The difference in intensity between spawning and resting fish was only observed in males, and can be explained by differences in exposure or susceptibility to parasites. However, there is indirect evidence that the difference in parasite intensities does not stem from varying exposure originating from group differences in consumption of carotenoid-containing intermediate hosts. We show, rather, that spawning males may be more susceptible, since they have a smaller spleen, which is an important lymphocyte-producing organ, than resting males. As these costs of spawning are found predominantly among males, they are unlikely to be the result of energetic investment in gamete production, as gamete production in general is thought to be more energetically demanding in females than in males. Rather, we suggest that the observed costs of reproduction result from immune suppression related to ornamental development and spermatogenesis.

Sympatric Arctic charr, Salvelinus alpinus (L. 1758), morphs have flexible but repeated life history strategies tested across five Norwegian lakes. In several Scandinavian polymorphic Arctic charr populations differentiated by their diet and habitat use, a large littoral omnivorous (LO) morph commonly cooccurs with a smaller profundal spawning (PB/PZ) morph. A third, large piscivorous (PP) morph is also known to occur within a portion of Arctic charr populations in the profundal habitat along with the PB/PZ individuals. Life history traits, such as age at maturity, growth, and diet are known to differ among coexisting morphs. Notably, the PP morph was the longest morph with the oldest age at maturity while the PB/PZ morph showed the shortest lengths overall and youngest age with LO morph being intermediate in both traits. Growth parameters differed across all the morphs. When examining growth within morph groups, the LO morph was found to have different growth across all lakes, while similar reproductive investments and different energy acquisition patterns were seen within the PB/PZ and PP morphs. These results suggest repeat evolution in several life history strategies of reproductively isolated Arctic charr sympatric morphs, notably for the first time in the PP morph, while also highlighting the importance of the local environment in modulating life history traits.

Samples from 11 populations of the Arctic char of the North-European part of Russia belonging to the anadromous and resident forms and two samples from Lake Sobach'e (Taimyr) were studied. The nucleotide sequence of the mitochondrial COI gene was determined in 60 individuals. In the majority of populations, the same COI haplotype was found. In some populations of the resident chars, haplotypes differing from the widespread haplotype in a single nucleotide substitution were found. The obtained genetic data give no reason to distinguish the resident form of the Arctic char from lakes of Karelia and the Kola Peninsula as an independent species, Salvelinus lep- echini. The adaptation of the Arctic char to the unstable environmental conditions is ensured primarily by its phenotypic plasticity.
