THE FOREST HABITAT TYPES IN SOUTHEASTERN MANITOBA AND THEIR APPLICATION TO FOREST MANAGEMENT

A forest ecological land classification in southeastern Manitoba resulted in the description of 14 forest habitat types, including three subtypes. These are based on silviculturally significant differences of soil moisture and nutrient regime, which are interpreted through tangible features of the three ecosystem components: vegetation, soil, and landform. The types encompass the regional environment from the driest habitats on sand dunes to the wettest in low moor bogs and from the nutritionally poorest on siliceous sandy podzols to the richest on alluvial bottomlands.The classification is to serve as a basic framework for silvicultural practices in the area. Aspects of application to current forest management are discussed.

Forest site classification is a prerequisite to successful integrated forest resources planning and management. Traditionally,site classification has emphasized a phytocentric approach, with tools such as the site index having a rich and longhistory in forest site evaluation. The concept of site index was primarily devised to assess site productivity of an even-aged,single-species stand. Site index has been the primary method of forest site evaluation in support of management for traditionalforest products. However, this method of site classification has been criticized as the needs, perspectives andsocial values of the public regarding forest management have changed the emphasis from timber production to multiplevalueforestry practices. There are alternative approaches to forest site classification that have the potential to meet thegrowing demands placed on forest information for inventory and modeling purposes. Ecological Land Classification(ELC), is a phytogeocentric approach that stratifies the landscape into ecologically meaningful units (ecosites) based onsubstrate characteristics, moisture regime and canopy composition. This approach offers a more holistic view of site productivityevaluation; however, until recently it has been difficult to acquire data to support widespread mapping ofecosites. Remote sensing technology along with predictive modeling and interpretive mapping techniques make the applicationof an ecosite-based approach at the forest landscape level possible. As forest management moves towards the considerationof a broader set of resources (e.g., woody biomass), there is an opportunity to develop new tools for linking forestproductivity to the sustainable production of forest bioproducts with forest ecosites as a solid foundation forsegmenting the landscape. Understanding soil moisture behavior in semi-dry forests is essential for evaluating the impact of forest management on water availability. The objective of the study was to analyze soil moisture based in storm observations in three micro-catchments (0.19, 0.20, and 0.27 ha) with similar tree densities, and subject to different thinning intensities in a semi-dry forest in Chihuahua, Mexico. Vegetation, soil characteristics, precipitation, and volumetric water content were measured before thinning (2018), and after 0%, 40%, and 80% thinning for each micro-catchment (2019). Soil moisture was low and relatively similar among the three micro-catchments in 2018 (mean = 8.5%), and only large rainfall events (>30 mm) increased soil moisture significantly (29–52%). After thinning, soil moisture was higher and significantly different among the micro-catchments only during small rainfall events (<10 mm), while a difference was not noted during large events. The difference before–after during small rainfall events was not significant for the control (0% thinning); whereas 40% and 80% thinning increased soil moisture significantly by 40% and 53%, respectively. Knowledge of the response of soil moisture as a result of thinning and rainfall characteristics has important implications, especially for evaluating the impact of forest management on water availability.

This appeal to relationships, rather than to climate, or to geomorphology, or to soils, or to vegetation alone, provides the common basis for land classification.

Se han propuesto distintos criterios para medir la diversidad a nivel local (alfa y beta diversidad) a nivel regional (gama diversidad) y también a nivel del paisaje (ecodiversidad). De todas estas aproximaciones a la complejidad biótica en los ecosistemas, la ecodiversidad permite conocer la disponibilidad y la conectividad entre hábitat y lograr una idea de la variabilidad espacial de los ecosistemas. Se presentan siete índices de ecodiversidad y se discute sus ventajas y desventajas para el análisis de paisajes muy disturbados. Se analizó el paisaje del Establecimiento Las Marías, en el NE de Corrientes, que tiene algo más de 30.000 ha, comprendiendo 12.000 ha de sistemas forestales nativos y cultivados y 18.000 ha. dedicadas a té, yerba mate y policultivos. Se utilizó imágenes Landsat 7 y el procedimiento de Ecological Land Classification (ELC), para identificar las principales unidades de paisaje (bosques, pasturas, cuerpos de agua, diferentes cultivos). Se encontraron tres subsistemas de paisaje diferentes, se obtuvo información del número de polígonos y de la superficie comprendida en cada uso del paisaje y se la comparó cuantitativamente mediante varios índices. Se concluye que una determinada unidad de paisaje puede tener muy diferente diversidad, según el contexto de paisaje en el que se encuentre incluida.

Liana is a species of plant that has a way of growing by creeping, spreading, or hanging on its host, but its roots are still attached to the ground. Liana is one of the primate feeds in Cabang Panti Research Station. The riset was conducted from August 15 - September 15 2018 at the Cabang Panti Research Station-Gunung Palung National Park. This riset aims to obtain data on the diversity of liana species and is expected to provide data and information about the diversity of these plant species. The results showed in five habitat types namely the peat swamp forest habitat - freshwater swamps found 79 individuals, alluvial soil found 54 individuals, sandy rocks found 59 individuals, Lowland granite found 56 individuals and highland granite found 38 individuals. The total number of the five habitat types is 286 individuals from 21 genus/species. Keywords: Cabang Panti Research Station, Diversity, Lianas Plants.
