The service available from data centers to structural consultants engaged in the design of buildings is reviewed here. This review includes the main hardware provided by the centers, the application software available, and some comments on the support offered for their application software. This information was obtained by purchasing computer time from data centers in the Ottawa area and using their computer programs in hypothetical design situations. This was supplemented by interviews with data center representatives and a study of brochures and manuals published by the data centers. Although the service available is not of consistently high quality right across the board, there are a few data centers that do offer good service to their engineering clients.

For computer-aided design solutions search, a computational tool, which will substantially facilitate designer’s work, has been developed. Structural optimization method – genetic algorithm method is taken as a basis. To accelerate design solutions synthesis, computer-aided design system in the form of a developed computational tool is used. It automatically synthesizes a significant number of design solutions using formalized conditions of strength facility requirements. Then, user compares the solutions upon performance criterion and selects the best options. The article demonstrates possibility of genetic algorithm application for obtaining design solutions through the example of a structural coating plate. The advantage of this method is obviousness in solutions search, visualization of proposed structures and user’s work with the system in dialog mode.

To reduce energy resource consumption in construction industry and housing and utilities infrastructure, it is necessary to maximize the use of new structural solutions for buildings and structures. Separation of the functions of the bearing and enclosing structures allows the use of optimal design scheme with minimal steel spread for the supporting structures and effective modern thermal insulation materials for the enclosure. The advantages of gridshell structural system are durability, seismic stability, easily built, dismantling, transportation, re-installation without the use of heavy equipment, it is also can be used in remote and hard-to-reach places. The authors propose modules that can be used as exhibition pavilions, shops, cafes with the height of the room up to 6 m. Mass production of gridshell domes became possible with the advent of computer-aided design, allowing to perform the calculation and design of a three-dimensional model of the structure.

A data center is a specialized building or room where a company, organization, or government Agency places information and network equipment and then connects to the network. Data centers solve the owner's strategic information and communication tasks. The constant increase in operating costs of data processing cents is driving innovation to improve their efficiency. Today, one of the newest ways to improve the design and functionality of data centers is to integrate building information modeling. Analysis of simulation results and calculated values with existing performance indicators of the data center will help you quickly identify the places of failures or disruptions, as well as form an algorithm for the procedure of intervention in the operation in order to improve efficiency and smooth operation. Integrating the capabilities of information modeling technologies in the design process increases the efficiency of both the overall design of the object and special design indicators for data processing centers. This article describes the basics of integrating information modeling of buildings and data processing centers, the advantages of information modeling approaches, the role of information modeling technologies in the development and improvement of methods for designing data processing centers, as well as ways to implement the information model of the data center. The author proves and explains the necessity of developing an information model of the data center, as well as offers possible implementation tools. In addition to the advantages of the model at the design stage, the author also highlights the possibilities of using data at the subsequent stages of installation and operation.
