We define semistable generalized parabolic Hitchin pairs (GPH) on a disjoint union [Formula: see text] of integral smooth curves and construct their moduli spaces. We define a Hitchin map on the moduli space of GPH and show that it is a proper map. We construct moduli spaces of semistable Hitchin pairs on a reducible projective curve [Formula: see text]. When [Formula: see text] is the normalization of [Formula: see text], we give a birational morphism [Formula: see text] from the moduli space [Formula: see text] of good GPH on [Formula: see text] to the moduli space [Formula: see text] of Hitchin pairs on [Formula: see text] and show that the Hitchin map on [Formula: see text] induces a proper Hitchin map on [Formula: see text]. We determine the fibers of the Hitchin maps. We study the relationship between representations of the (topological) fundamental group of [Formula: see text] and Higgs bundles on [Formula: see text]. We show that if all the irreducible components of [Formula: see text] are smooth, then the Hitchin map is defined on the entire moduli space [Formula: see text].

AbstractWe study the motive of the moduli space of semistable Higgs bundles of coprime rank and degree on a smooth projective curve C over a field k under the assumption that C has a rational point. We show this motive is contained in the thick tensor subcategory of Voevodsky’s triangulated category of motives with rational coefficients generated by the motive of C. Moreover, over a field of characteristic zero, we prove a motivic non-abelian Hodge correspondence: the integral motives of the Higgs and de Rham moduli spaces are isomorphic.

A primitive multiple curve is a Cohen–Macaulay irreducible projective curve [Formula: see text] that can be locally embedded in a smooth surface, and such that [Formula: see text] is smooth. In this case, [Formula: see text] is a line bundle on [Formula: see text]. If [Formula: see text] is of multiplicity 2, i.e. if [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] is called a ribbon. If [Formula: see text] is a ribbon and [Formula: see text], then [Formula: see text] can be deformed to smooth curves, but in general a coherent sheaf on [Formula: see text] cannot be deformed in coherent sheaves on the smooth curves. It has been proved in [Reducible deformations and smoothing of primitive multiple curves, Manuscripta Math. 148 (2015) 447–469] that a ribbon with associated line bundle [Formula: see text] such that [Formula: see text] can be deformed to reduced curves having two irreducible components if [Formula: see text] can be written as [Formula: see text] where [Formula: see text] are distinct points of [Formula: see text]. In this case we prove that quasi-locally free sheaves on [Formula: see text] can be deformed to torsion-free sheaves on the reducible curves with two components. This has some consequences on the structure and deformations of the moduli spaces of semi-stable sheaves on [Formula: see text].

This paper concerns the moduli spaces of rank-two parabolic Higgs bundles and parabolic K(D) pairs over a smooth curve. Precisely which parabolic bundles occur in stable K(D) pairs and stable Higgs bundles is determined. Using Morse theory, the moduli space of parabolic Higgs bundles is shown to be a non-compact, connected, simply connected manifold, and a computation of its Poincaré polynomial is given.

AbstractWe prove that, given a smooth projective curve C of genus g≥2, the forgetful morphism $\mathcal {M}_{\mathbf {O}_r} \longrightarrow \mathcal {M}_{\mathbf {GL}_r}$ (respectively $\mathcal M_{\mathbf {Sp}_{2r}}\longrightarrow \mathcal M_{\mathbf {GL}_{2r}}$) from the moduli space of orthogonal (respectively symplectic) bundles to the moduli space of all vector bundles over C is an embedding. Our proof relies on an explicit description of a set of generators for the polynomial invariants on the representation space of a quiver under the action of a product of classical groups.

Let [Formula: see text] be a geometrically irreducible smooth projective curve, of genus at least three, defined over the field of real numbers. Let [Formula: see text] be a connected reductive affine algebraic group, defined over [Formula: see text], such that [Formula: see text] is nonabelian and has one simple factor. We prove that the isomorphism class of the moduli space of principal [Formula: see text]-bundles on [Formula: see text] determine uniquely the isomorphism class of [Formula: see text].

This survey is based on my lectures given in the last few years. As a reference, constructions of moduli spaces of parabolic sheaves and generalized parabolic sheaves are provided. By a refinement of the proof of vanishing theorems, we show, without using vanishing theorems, a new observation that [Formula: see text] is independent of all of the choices for any smooth curves. The estimate of various codimensions and computation of canonical line bundle of moduli space of generalized parabolic sheaves on a reducible curve are provided in Section 6, which is completely new.

By work of Looijenga and others, one understands the relationship between Geometric Invariant Theory (GIT) and Baily–Borel compactifications for the moduli spaces of degree-$2$ $K3$ surfaces, cubic fourfolds, and a few other related examples. The similar-looking cases of degree-$4$ $K3$ surfaces and double Eisenbud–Popescu–Walter (EPW) sextics turn out to be much more complicated for arithmetic reasons. In this paper, we refine work of Looijenga in order to handle these cases. Specifically, in analogy with the so-called Hassett–Keel program for the moduli space of curves, we study the variation of log canonical models for locally symmetric varieties of Type IV associated to $D$-lattices. In particular, for the $19$-dimensional case, we conjecturally obtain a continuous one-parameter interpolation between the GIT and Baily–Borel compactifications for the moduli of degree-$4$ $K3$ surfaces. The analogous $18$-dimensional case, which corresponds to hyperelliptic degree-$4$ $K3$ surfaces, can be verified by means of Variation of Geometric Invariant Theory (VGIT) quotients.

We prove a closed formula counting semistable twisted (or meromorphic) Higgs bundles of fixed rank and degree over a smooth projective curve of genus $g$ defined over a finite field, when the twisting line bundle degree is at least $2g-2$ (this includes the case of usual Higgs bundles). This yields a closed expression for the Donaldson–Thomas invariants of the moduli spaces of twisted Higgs bundles. We similarly deal with twisted quiver sheaves of type $A$ (finite or affine), obtaining in particular a Harder–Narasimhan-type formula counting semistable $U(p,q)$-Higgs bundles over a smooth projective curve defined over a finite field.

Let C be a smooth projective complex curve of genus g≥2 and let M be the moduli space of rank 2, stable vector bundles on C, with fixed determinant of degree 1. For any k≥1, we find all the irreducible components of the space of rational curves on M, of degree k. In particular, we find the maximal rationally connected fibrations of these components. We prove that there is a one-to-one correspondence between moduli spaces of rational curves on M and moduli spaces of rank 2 vector bundles on ℙ1×C.

AbstractWe analyze the relationship between two compactifications of the moduli space of maps from curves to a Grassmannian: the Kontsevich moduli space of stable maps and the Marian–Oprea–Pandharipande moduli space of stable quotients. We construct a moduli space which dominates both the moduli space of stable maps to a Grassmannian and the moduli space of stable quotients, and equip our moduli space with a virtual fundamental class. We relate the virtual fundamental classes of all three moduli spaces using the virtual push-forward formula. This gives a new proof of a theorem of Marian–Oprea–Pandharipande: that enumerative invariants defined as intersection numbers in the stable quotient moduli space coincide with Gromov–Witten invariants.
