We show that measurements of the upper critical field can, within the context of the pairing hypothesis, distinguish between spin fluctuation dominated pairing and those that do not involve spin. Comparison with experiments supports the hypothesis that the dominant pairing interaction in high Tc compounds is spin fluctuation induced. We also show the existence of a new mode in the mixed state, the mid-gap state, which is an immediate consequence of gauge symmetry.
