We have designed and synthesized novel luminescent lanthanide complexes based on a naphthalene derivative. The coordination number of complexed ligands with Eu 3+ ions is an important parameter to enhance the photoluminescence (PL) intensity. The photoluminescence spectra of Eu ( III )-cored complexes exhibit a sharp red emission band at 612 nm, corresponding to the 5 D 0→7 F 2 transition of the trivalent Eu ion. The saturated europium complexes (C-2 and C-3) have much stronger PL intensity than the unsaturated 6-coordinated europium complex (C-1), due to the instability of the C-1 complex. In this paper, the synthesis and photophysical properties of novel europium(III)-chelated complexes based on a naphthalene derivative will be discussed.

a fluorine functionalized 1,10-phenanthroline ligand, 3-ethyl-2-(2-fluorophenyl) imidazo[4,5-f]1,10-phenanthroline(EFPIP) and the corresponding red-emitting Eu(ΙΙΙ) complex Eu(DBM)3(EFPIP) (DBM = dibenzoylmethanate) was synthesized and the photophysical properties and electroluminescent(EL) performances were researched. When Eu(DBM)3(EFPIP) was used as emitting material in organic devices, the maximum efficiency and luminance of red emission achieved from the EL device with the configuration of ITO/m-MTDATA (30 nm)/NPB (20 nm)/ x wt% Eu(DBM)3(EFPIP) doped in CBP (30 nm)/Bphen (20 nm)/Alq3 (20 nm)/LiF (0.8 nm)/Al were 3.6 cd/A and 563 cd/m2, respectively. Compared with the previously reported devices based on methyl or chlorine substitute Eu(ΙΙΙ) complexes, the EL performances of the device using Eu(DBM)3(EFPIP) as an emitter was significantly enhanced due to the introduction of fluorine.

AbstractA series of new red phosphors, MZr2(PO4)3:Eu3+; Bi3+ (M=Na; K), were synthesized using the solidstate reaction method, and their photoluminescence spectra were measured. The MZr2(PO4)3:Eu3+; Bi3+ (M=Na; K) phosphors were efficiently excited by an ultraviolet (UV; 395 nm) source, and showed intense orange-red emission at 595 nm. Further investigation of the concentration-dependent emission spectra indicated that the MZr2(PO4)3:Eu3+; Bi3+ (M=Na; K) phosphors exhibit the strongest luminescence intensity when y = 0.01 in NaZr2(0:95−y)(PO4)3:Eu0.103+, Bi2y 3+ and y = 0.09 in NaZr2(0.95−y)(PO4)3:Eu0.103+, Bi2y 3+, whereas the relative PL intensity decreases with increasing Bi3+ concentration due to concentration quenching. The addition of Bi3+ widens the excitation band of NaZr2(0.95−y)(PO4)3:Eu0.103+, Bi2y 3+ around 320 nm, which provides the useful idea of broadening the excitation band around 300–350 nm to fit the ultraviolet chip.

Europium (III) luminescent chelates possess intrinsic photophysical properties that are extremely useful in a wide range of applications. The lack of examples of coumarin-based lanthanide complexes is mainly due to poor photo-sensitization attempts. However, with the appeal of using such a versatile scaffold as antenna, especially in the development of responsive molecular probes, it is worth the effort to research new structural motifs. In this work, we present a series of two new tris coumarin-dipicolinate europium (III) complexes, specifically tailored to be either a mono or a dual emitter, tuning their properties with a simple chemical modification. We also encountered a rich chemical speciation in solution, studied in detail by means of paramagnetic NMR and emission spectroscopy.
