We give a lower bound of the Loewy length of the projective cover of the trivial module for the group algebra kG of a finite group G of Lie type defined over a finite field of odd characteristic p, where k is an arbitrary field of characteristic p. The proof uses Auslander-Reiten theory.

In this note relations between the structure of a finite group G and ringtheoretical properties of the group algebra FG over a field F with characteristic p > 0 are investigated. Denoting by J(R) the Jacobson radical and by Z(R) the centre of the ring R, our aim is to prove the following theorem generalizing results of Wallace [10] and Spiegel [9]:Theorem. Let G be a finite group and let F be an arbitrary field of characteristic p > 0. Denoting by BL the principal block ideal of the group algebra FG the following statements are equivalent:(i) J(B1) ≤ Z(B1)(ii) J(B1)is commutative,(iii) G is p-nilpotent with abelian Sylowp-subgroups.

AbstractWe give a lower bound on the Loewy length of a p-block of a finite group in terms of its defect. We then discuss blocks with small Loewy length. Since blocks with Loewy length at most 3 are known, we focus on blocks of Loewy length 4 and provide a relatively short list of possible defect groups. It turns out that p-solvable groups can only admit blocks of Loewy length 4 if p=2. However, we find (principal) blocks of simple groups with Loewy length 4 and defect 1 for all p ≡ 1 (mod 3). We also consider sporadic, symmetric and simple groups of Lie type in defining characteristic. Finally, we give stronger conditions on the Loewy length of a block with cyclic defect group in terms of its Brauer tree.

Let G be any finite group with elementary abelian Sylow 3-subgroups of order 9, and let F be any field of characteristic 3. Then, the Loewy length of the projective cover of the trivial FG-module is at least 5. This lower bound is the best possible.

AbstractLet G be a finite group, let k be a field and let R be a finite dimensional fully G-graded k-algebra. Also let L be a completely reducible R-module and let P be a projective cover of R. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for P|R1 to be a projective cover of L|R1 in Mod (R1). In particular, this happens if and only if L is R1-projective. Some consequences in finite group representation theory are deduced.

Let G be a finite group with a normal Sylow p-subgroup P. Let [Formula: see text] be a complete discrete valuation ring with residue field F of characteristic p. Let M be an indecomposable endo-monomial [Formula: see text]-module. In this paper we prove that M extends to an [Formula: see text]-module if and only if M is G-stable. A similar and well-known version for endo-permutation modules is due to Dade.

Let [Formula: see text] be a finite group and [Formula: see text], where [Formula: see text] denotes the order of [Formula: see text]. The function [Formula: see text] was introduced by Tărnăuceanu. In [M. Tărnăuceanu, Detecting structural properties of finite groups by the sum of element orders, Israel J. Math. (2020), https://doi.org/10.1007/s11856-020-2033-9 ], some lower bounds for [Formula: see text] are determined such that if [Formula: see text] is greater than each of them, then [Formula: see text] is cyclic, abelian, nilpotent, supersolvable and solvable. Also, an open problem aroused about finite groups [Formula: see text] such that [Formula: see text] is equal to the amount of each lower bound. In this paper, we give an answer to the equality condition which is a partial answer to the open problem posed by Tărnăuceanu. Also, in [M. Baniasad Azad and B. Khosravi, A criterion for p-nilpotency and p-closedness by the sum of element orders, Commun. Algebra (2020), https://doi.org/10.1080/00927872.2020.1788571 ], it is shown that: If [Formula: see text], where [Formula: see text] is a prime number, then [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] is cyclic. As the next result, we show that if [Formula: see text] is not a [Formula: see text]-nilpotent group and [Formula: see text], then [Formula: see text].

1. Introduction.Let p be a prime number. A finite group G = (G, B, N, R, U) is called a split(B, N)-pair of characteristic p and rank n if(i) G has a (B, N)-pair (see [3, Definition 2.1, p. B-8]) where H= B ⋂ N and the Weyl group W= N/H is generated by the set R= ﹛ω 1,… , ω n) of “special generators.”(ii) H= ⋂n∈N n-1Bn(iii) There exists a p-subgroup U of G such that B = UH is a semidirect product, and H is abelian with order prime to p.A (B, N)-pair satisfying (ii) is called a saturated (B, N)-pair. We call a finite group G which satisfies (i) and (iii) an unsaturated split (B, N)- pair. (Unsaturated means “not necessarily saturated”.)
