We present the experimental investigation of the non-Gaussian nature of some mixtures of Fock states by reconstructing their Wigner function and exploiting two recently introduced measures of non-Gaussianity. In particular, we demonstrate the consistency between the different approaches and the monotonicity of the two measures for states belonging to the class of phase-randomized coherent states. Moreover, we prove that the exact behavior of one measure with respect to the other depends on the states under investigation and devise possible criteria to discriminate which measure is more useful for the characterization of the states in realistic applications.

A laser field may be idealized as a coherent state, but it is often more convenient to use Fock states fQr quantum electrodynamical calculations. A Fock state implies fluctuations in the field intensity, aptl a constant field intensity (coherent state) implies fluctuations in the photon number. Both these effects are discussed rigorously. When the average photon number tends to infinity, these different states become asymptotically indistinguishable.

In this work, we analyze the quantum dynamics of a generalized pendulum with a time-varying mass increasing exponentially and constant gravitation. By using Lewis–Riesenfeld invariant approach and Fock states, we solve the time-dependent Schrödinger equation for this system and write its solutions in terms of solutions of the Milne–Pinney equation. We also construct coherent states for the quantized pendulum and use both Fock and coherent states to investigate some important physical proprieties of the quantized pendulum such as eigenvalues of the angular displacement and momentum, their quantum variances as well as the respective uncertainty principle. Finally, we derive the geometric, dynamical and Berry phases for the time-dependent generalized pendulum.

As a generalization of the nonlinear coherent states we construct nonlinear displaced Fock states (NLDFS). In contrast to the ordinary displaced Fock state, two kinds of NLDFS are introduced, which are composed by nonlinear displacing operator on the nonlinear Fock states Df(α)| n>f and [Formula: see text]. The over-completeness relation for NLDFS is obtained by virtue of the generalized technique of integration within an ordered product of operators. Generation of some kind of NLDFS is briefly discussed.
