Embedded systems are supporting the trend of moving away from centralised, high-cost products towards low-cost and high-volume products; yet, the non-functional constraints and the device heterogeneity can lead to system complexity. In this regard, Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) is the best methodology for developing a loosely coupled, dynamic, flexible, distributed, and cost-effective application. SOA relies heavily on services, and the Semantic Web, as the advanced form of the Web, handles the application complexity and heterogeneity with the help of ontology. With an ever-increasing number of similar Web services in UDDI, a functional description of Web services is not sufficient for the discovery process. It is also difficult to rank the similar services based on their functionality. Therefore, the Quality of Service (QoS) description of Web services plays an important role in ranking services within many similar functional services. Context-awareness has been widely studied in embedded and real-time systems and can also play an important role in service ranking as an additional set of criteria. In addition, it can enhance human-computer interaction with the help of ontologies in distributed and heterogeneous environments. In order to address the issues involved in ranking similar services based on the QoS and context-awareness, the authors propose a service discovery framework for distributed embedded real-time systems in this chapter. The proposed framework considers user priorities, QoS, and the context-awareness to enable the user to select the best service among many functional similar services.

Despite the enormous number of online docking services available, consumers sometimes struggle to discover the services they require from time to time. On the other hand, when finding matching or recommendation platforms from an academic or industry perspective, most of the related work they can find is centralized systems. Unfortunately, the centralized systems often have shortages, such as adv-driven, lack of trust, non-transparency, and unfairness. The authors propose a peer-to-peer (P2P) service network for service discovery and recommendation. ServiceNet is a blockchain-based service ecosystem that promises to provide an open, transparent, self-growing, and self-managing service environment. The article will provide the basic concept, the proto-architecture type's design, and the proto-initial type's implementation and performance assessment.

The environments of pervasive computing are open and dynamic. In order to ensure the dynamic discovery of services evolving in a heterogeneous and dynamic environment, specific extensions to WSDL, known as A-WSDL are suggested. These extensions permit to a service provider to define the context of service use and the behavior associated to each change of context. To verify and prove the expected behavior of the suggested discovery protocol in the design phase, the Event-B formalism is adopted. One of the advantages of the Event B formalism is the application of the refining techniques which permit to express complex features by means of mathematical proofs and moves from an abstract specification to a concrete specification by using the Rodin tool which offers a support for the refining and the proofs.

Matchmaking is the basis of doing service discovery and composition. Using ontology semantically express the service of capabilities, correctly match service. Domain ontology and Formal Concept Analysis aim at modeling concept. The role of FCA in ontology engineering is supporting reusing independently developed domain ontology. Evaluating concept similarity identifies the different concepts that are semantically close. In this paper, using concept and attribute of web services to construct the ontology. Also, an ontology based method for assessing similarity between FCA concepts is proposed.

The power of Web services to address the incompatibility issue of standalone systems, has led them to play a major role in business application development. Adopting an efficient and effective method to locate and select desired services among thousands of available candidates is an important task in the service-oriented computing. As part of a Web service discovery system, the ranking process enables users to locate their desired services more effectively. Many of the existing approaches ignore the role of user's requirements which is an important factor in the ranking process. In this thesis we enhance a vector-based ranking method by considering user's requirements. The vector-based model is chosen because of its simplicity and high efficiency. We evaluate all Web services in terms of their similarity degrees to the optimal or the best available values of each quality attribute, and penalize the services that fail to meet the user's requirements. Through our extensive experiments using real datasets, we compare the improved algorithm with other approaches to evaluate it in terms of efficiency (the execution time to return the result) and quality of the results (accuracy).
