Effects of cold exposure and dehydration on renal function in black-tailed prairie dogs

Black-tailed prairie dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus) were deprived of food and water for several weeks during the fall and winter in a cold-room hibernaculum (Ta 5–8 degrees C), and for several days at room temperature during the summer. Body temperatures (Tb) were determined periodically in nine animals by radiotransmitters implanted in the abdomen. Animals deprived of food and water in the summer were killed when maximum urine concentration was achieved. Eight animals in the winter were active when killed after 7–35 days in the hibernaculum with Tb between 18 and 36 degrees C. Five animals that became torpid periodically in the winter were killed after 19–42 days in the hibernaculum when their Tb indicated torpor (Tb less than 13 degrees C). Active animals in the summer and winter possessed pronounced renal corticomedullary urea and sodium concentration gradients. Torpid animals lacked these gradients and had lower urine and plasma osmotic concentrations than active animals. Plasma urea values and terminal osmolal U/P ratios were lowest in torpid prairie dogs.

Body temperatures (Tb) of black-tailed prairie dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus) were monitored in the field for 1 year. A daily Tb rhythm was evident during all months that animals were monitored. Diurnal high Tb was always greater than nocturnal low Tb. An annual Tb pattern was evident with summer Tb > winter Tb. The maximum range in Tb over the year was 5.8 °C, between August diurnal Tb (39.3 °C) and January nocturnal Tb (33.5 °C). The greatest difference between average high and low Tb in 1 month occurred in January (2.8 °C). Torpor was never observed. The lowest recorded Tb in any individual animal was 31.0 °C during nighttime hours in January. Males exhibited higher Tb than females at all hours during the prebreeding period in January, while females showed greater Tb than males during the breeding period in February for 15 of 24 h. Significant differences in Tb were not observed between males and females at other times of the year. The daily and annual Tb patterns observed result in energy and water savings.

Ice formation under controlled conditions was studied in a cold room using a cylindrical steel tank 120 cm in diameter and 76 cm deep. Paddles turned by a variable speed motor moved the water about the axis of the tank. Twenty-one thermistors were used to record temperatures above and below the surface of the water. Ice was allowed to form with the cold room temperature held at −2 °C, −5 °C, −10 °C, and −20 °C and with water speeds (measured 4 cm from the tank wall) from 0 to 73 cm/s.At zero water speed ice formed first as needles randomly oriented over the surface. With flowing water, border ice width increased linearly with time, but independently of water speed. The rate of increase of the border width w fits the equation dw/dt = (4/9)|Ta|0.68 where Ta is the Celsius air temperature.Frazil was never observed at water speeds less than 24 cm/s, but was always formed at this or greater speeds, regardless of cold room temperature. The volume of slush accumulated was greater at greater water speeds and at colder air temperatures. Observed slush volumes are compared with semiempirical values of the ice mass obtained from theoretical equations. The data suggest that growth of ice crystals began when the water was supercooled by approximately 0.02 °C.

Introduction. Renal dysfunction is one of complications in patients with obstructive icterus. It is important to recognize it early and take adequate measure to prevent its occurrence. One third of the patients with obstructive icterus have deterioration of renal function before surgical intervention. The aim of the research was to assess the renal dysfunction markers in patients with obstructive icterus. The following factors were examined: diuresis, urinary sodium concentration, sodium excretory fraction, urine osmolality, osmotic concentration index, creatinine concentration index and renal index of lesion. Material and methods. The study included 85 patients with obstructive icterus (50 patients before surgical intervention and 35 after surgical intervention) and 30 patients without icterus as a control group. The patients with normal renal function before the development of the disease were included. Results. Malignant etiology was present in 39 patients and benign in 46 patients of the examined group. The evaluation parameters of renal function were examined in all of the patients. Creatinine concentration index led to the greatest change in the coefficient value of an internal consistency, showing that it was the best renal function marker in the examined group of patients with icterus. The next one was the urinary osmolality, since its exclusion would lead to a decrease in the value of Cronbach ? coefficient to 0.06. Icterus and surgical intervention show statistically significant effects to change in the value of the markers of laboratory differentiation of renal function, observed as an entire set. Discussion and conclusion. The examination showed that the concentration clearances of creatinine and urine osmolality are the parameters which point to the probability of renal dysfunction occurrence in obstructive icterus.
