The resulting 5-(4-methyl piper-azinylmethylene)-8-quinolinol (MPQ) was characterized by elemental analysis and spectral studies. The transition metal chelatesvizCu+2, Ni+2, Co+2, Mn+2, Zn+2, Cd+2, and Fe+3of MPQ were prepared and characterized by metal-ligand (M:L) ratio, IR and reflectance spectroscopies and magnetic properties. The antifungal activity of MPQ and its metal chelates was screened against various fungi. The results show that all these samples are good antifungal agents.

Tannin obtained from Eucalyptus plant, condensed with formaldehyde and then 8-hydroxy quinoline. The so called obtained polymer designated as TFQ was used for metal chelate formation. Thus Transition metal chelates of TFQ with Zn+2, Co+2, Cu+2, Ni+2 and Mn+2 metal ions were prepared. The ligand TFQ and its all five metal chelates were characterized by nitrogen content, IR, UV-Visible spectral studies, magnetic moments and thermogravimetry. The antimicrobial activity of all the samples has also been monitored against common microbes.

The Schiff base complexes derived from 2-furancarboxaldehyde and N-methyl-2-amino phenol have been prepared and characterized using several physical techniques, like elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, magnetic moment measurements, infrared and resonance spectra.N-Methyl-2-amino phenol was condensed stoichiometrically with 2-furancarboxaldehyde in presence of methanol. The resulting 1,7-di(2-hydroxyphenyl) 1,7 di(N-methyl) aza-1,3,5 heptarine-3-ol hydrochloride was characterized by elemental analysis and spectral studies. The transition metal complexes of Cu2+, Zn2+, Ni2+, Co2+and Mn2+of the synthesized complexes were prepared. Metal ligand (M:L) ratio, IR, reflectance spectral studies, magnetic properties and antimicrobial activity of the synthesized complexes and its metal complexes were carried out.

A series of carbazole-based 1,4-benzothiazepine and pyrazoline derivatives were synthesized and the structures of the newly synthesized compounds were confirmed by FT-IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR and mass spectral studies. All new derivatives 4(a-f) and 5(a-e) were screened for their in vitro antimicrobial activity, and also for their antimalarial activity. Compounds 4a, 4b, 4d, 5a, 5b and 5c exhibited promising antimicrobial and antimalarial activities as compared to positive control. Notably, compounds 4a, 4b and 4d showed excellent antifungal activity against Penicillium sp. comparable to that of a standard drug.

Novel ligands containing quinazoline-4-one-8-hydroxyquinoline (QQ) merged moieties were prepared and characterized. For this anthranilic acid and 5-bromoanthranilic acid were converted respectively into 2-chloromethyl–3-(4-methyl phenyl)-3(H)-quinazoline-4-one and 2-chloromethyl–3-(methyl phenyl)-6-bromo-3(H)-quinazoline-4-one. Both these compounds were condensed with 5-amino-8-hydroxyquinoline. The so called resulted compounds were named respectively as 2-[(8-hydroxy-quinolinyl) –5- amino methyl] -3-(4-methylphenyl)- 3(H)- quinazoline -4- one and 2-[(8-hydroxyquinolinyl)-5-aminomethyl] -3(methyl phenyl)-6-bromo-3(H)-quinazoline-4-one. Both the compounds were designated respectively as HL1and HL2ligands. The transition metal (Cu2+, Ni2+, Zn2+, Mn2+and Co2+) complexes of both these ligands were prepared. The ligands and their complexes as case may be were characterized by elemental analysis, spectral studies and number of hydroxyl groups. The stoichiometry of the complexes has been found to be 1:2 (metal: ligand). An octahedral geometry around Co2+, Ni2+and Mn2+, distorted octahedral geometry around Cu2+and tetrahedral geometry of around Zn2+have been proposed. These complexes also been tested for their antifungal activities.
