A novel low radar cross-section (RCS) design method is proposed, and its application on Vivaldi antenna that covers the entire X band is investigated. According to the difference of the current distribution on the radiator when the antenna radiates or scatters, the shape of the metal radiator is modified, so that maximally 19.2 dBsm RCS reduction is achieved which satisfied radiation performance. Simulated and measured results about gain, S11, and RCS are presented. As a result, the effectiveness of the presented low RCS design method is validated.

The decomposition of the multivariate Non-Gaussian PDF in the sum of a Gaussian PDF instead of the Gram-Charlier series is investigated. Four parameters need to be found by minimizing the integrated square of the difference between Cox-Munk function and its approximation. The backscattering radar cross section (RCS) of the surface is calculated by the Kirchhoff approximation (KA) under different value of k using the formula of decomposition of the Non-Gaussian. The condition of KA satisfying electromagnetic scattering scale from Gaussian and Non-Gaussian surfaces is taken into account by computing the backscattering coefficients in HH and VV polarity.

The split ring resonators (SRR) is designed to work at X band and its equivalent medium parameters are estimated by using the equivalent analysis method. The high gain microstrip antenna, which is based on Photonic BandGap (PBG) structure, is also studied. To make the scattering wave deviates mirror direction and reduce the out-band Radar Cross Section (RCS) without affecting the performance of antenna, the designed SRR is used as the cover of PBG structure microstrip antenna. The results show that the forward gain of PBG structure antenna is 0.8 dB higher than the tradition antenna. After the SRR covers on the PBG structure antenna, the gain of antenna is unchanged and the RCS of the mirror direction decreases for all incident angles, and the most decrement is 21.05 dB.
