Abstract This work proposes a new plasma super-phase gradient metasurfaces (PS-PGMs) structure, owing to the limitations of the thin-layer plasma for electromagnetic wave attenuation. Based on the cross-shaped surface unit configuration, we have designed the X-band absorbing structure through the dispersion control method. By setting up the Drude dispersion model in the computer simulation technology, the designed phase gradient metasurfaces structure is superposed over the plasma, and the PS-PGMs structure is constructed. The electromagnetic scattering characteristics of the new structure have been simulated, and the reflectance measurement has been carried out to verify the absorbing effect. The results demonstrate that the attenuation effect of the new structure is superior to that of the pure plasma structure, which invokes an improved attenuation effect from the thin layer plasma, thus enhancing the feasibility of applying the plasma stealth technology to the local stealth of the strong scattering part of a combat aircraft.

The modified Maxwell's Steklov eigenvalue problem is a new problem arising from the study of inverse electromagnetic scattering problems. In this paper, we investigate two finite element methods for this problem and perform the convergence analysis. Moreover, the monotonic convergence of the discrete eigenvalues computed by one of the methods is analyzed.

The electromagnetic scattering study of the turbulent wake of a moving ship has important application value in target recognition and tracking. However, to date, there has been insufficient research into the electromagnetic characteristics of near-field propeller turbulence. This study presents a new procedure for evaluating the electromagnetic scattering coefficient and imaging characteristics of turbulent wakes in the near field. By controlling the different values of the net momenta, a turbulent wake was generated using the large-eddy simulation method. The results show that the net momentum transferred to the background flow field determines the development of the turbulent wake, which explains the formation mechanism of the turbulence. Combined with the turbulent energy attenuation spectrum, the electromagnetic scattering characteristics of the turbulent wake were calculated using the two-scale facet mode. Using this method, the impact of different parameters on the scattering coefficient and the electromagnetic image of the turbulence wake were investigated, to explain the modulation mechanism and electromagnetic imaging characteristics of the near-field turbulent wake. Moreover, an application for estimating a ship’s heading is proposed based on the electromagnetic imaging characteristics of the turbulent wake.

With the continuous development of advanced fighters towards tailless and flying wing layouts, diverse control surfaces have become the mainstream design. To study the influence of spoiler control surface on the radar cross-section (RCS) of a tailless fighter, a calculation method is presented. The deflection angle of the spoiler is controlled by the fixed mode, linear mode, and smooth mode. The results show that the opening action of the spoiler will break the original stealth characteristics of the aircraft at the key azimuth angles of the head and tail. As the elevation angle increases, this adverse effect will spread to the side. The influence of the different dynamic deflection modes of the spoiler on the aircraft RCS is analyzed. Compared with the linear dynamic deflection mode, the smooth dynamic deflection mode is conducive to the reduction in the average RCS at the given head azimuth. The presented method is effective to study the influence of the spoiler deflection on the electromagnetic scattering characteristics of the tailless aircraft.

It is very common to apply convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to synthetic aperture radar (SAR) automatic target recognition (ATR). However, most of the SAR ATR methods using CNN mainly use the image features of SAR images and make little use of the unique electromagnetic scattering characteristics of SAR images. For SAR images, attributed scattering centers (ASCs) reflect the electromagnetic scattering characteristics and the local structures of the target, which are useful for SAR ATR. Therefore, we propose a network to comprehensively use the image features and the features related to ASCs for improving the performance of SAR ATR. There are two branches in the proposed network, one extracts the more discriminative image features from the input SAR image; the other extracts physically meaningful features from the ASC schematic map that reflects the local structure of the target corresponding to each ASC. Finally, the high-level features obtained by the two branches are fused to recognize the target. The experimental results on the Moving and Stationary Target Acquisition and Recognition (MSTAR) dataset prove the capability of the SAR ATR method proposed in this letter.

This thesis is concerned with electrostatic boundary problems and how their solutions behave depending on the chosen basis of harmonic functions and the location of the fundamental singularities of the potential. The first part deals with the method of images for simple geometries where the exact nature of the image/fundamental singularity is unknown; essentially a study of analytic continuation for Laplace's equation in 3 dimensions. For the sphere, spheroid and cylinder, new deductions are made on the location of the images of point charges and their linear or surface charge densities, by using different harmonic series solutions that reveal the image. The second part looks for analytic expressions for the T-matrix for electromagnetic scattering of simple objects in the low frequency limit. In this formalism the incident and scattered fields are expanded on an orthogonal basis such as spherical harmonics, and the T-matrix is the transformation between the coefficients of these series, providing the general solution of any electromagnetic scattering problem by a given particle at a given wavelength. For the spheroid, bispherical system and torus, the natural basis of harmonic functions for the geometry of the scatterer are used to determine T-matrix expressed in that basis, which is then transformed onto a basis of canonical spherical harmonics via the linear relationships between different bases of harmonic functions.
