This paper presents a novel application of operations research to support decision making in blood distribution management. The rapid and dynamic increasing demand, criticality of the product, storage, handling, and distribution requirements, and the different geographical locations of hospitals and medical centers have made blood distribution a complex and important problem. In this study, a real blood distribution problem containing 24 hospitals was tackled by the authors, and an exact approach was presented. The objective of the problem is to distribute blood and its products among hospitals and medical centers such that the total waiting time of those requiring the product is minimized. Following the exact solution, a hybrid heuristic algorithm is proposed. Computational experiments showed the optimal solutions could be obtained for medium size instances, while for larger instances the proposed hybrid heuristic is very competitive.

In real industrial engineering, job shop scheduling problem (JSSP) is considered to be one of the most difficult and tricky non-deterministic polynomial-time (NP)-hard problems. This study proposes a new hybrid heuristic algorithm for solving JSSP inspired by the tissue-like membrane system. The framework of the proposed algorithm incorporates improved genetic algorithms (GA), modified rumor particle swarm optimization (PSO), and fine-grained local search methods (LSM). To effectively alleviate the premature convergence of GA, the improved GA uses adaptive crossover and mutation probabilities. Taking into account the improvement of the diversity of the population, the rumor PSO is discretized to interactively optimize the population. In addition, a local search operator incorporating critical path recognition is designed to enhance the local search ability of the population. Experiment with 24 benchmark instances show that the proposed algorithm outperforms other latest comparative algorithms, and hybrid optimization strategies that complement each other in performance can better break through the original limitations of the single meta-heuristic method.

This paper is focusing on an important transportation application encountered in supply chains, namely the capacitated two-stage fixed-charge transportation problem. For solving this complex optimization problem we described a novel hybrid heuristic approach obtained by combining a genetic algorithm based on a hash table coding of the individuals with a powerful local search procedure. The proposed algorithm was implemented and tested on an often used collection of benchmark instances and the computational results obtained showed that our proposed hybrid heuristic algorithm delivered competitive results compared to the state-of-the-art algorithms for solving the considered capacitated two-stage fixed-charge transportation problem.

Meeting increasing demand for the electrical power without changing the existing infrastructure is a challenging issue. The transmission and the distribution are always struggling with losses in our ac power system networks. In this research an intelligent fuzzy logic approach is to be used for power system operation and control in distribution management. The VAR compensating devices like OLTC, SVC are to be controlled by the fuzzy expert system for modifying reactive power. The fuzzy membership functions, fuzzy rules are to be displayed. A co-ordination control between these VAR compensating devices using fuzzy logic control is to be discussed. An optimum location and the proper design of a capacitor banks for reducing the harmonic injection in the power system is to be suggested. The validity of this approach is to be given by the comparison graphs. All the simulations are to be carried out by MATLAB software. This research will investigate the effects of arising problems in an ac power system distribution without changing the existing infra structure. The various types of problems arising in a power system are to be listed. Among these the voltage stability in the buses has got the top priority. The solutions for reducing the power congestion created by these arising problems can be carried out.
